4tion wi outlined iA the spipech gro=
he, Throne in the Ontario Legislature J
,as called bl the Uurou County So -
jai Service q9uncil. The conference
as .4eld in Wesley Ohurch, Clinton, i
.,uesday, March 8rd, and was well (
ttended by representatives from the i
-arious parts og the County, and a I
,ery definite stand was taken, not
uly in regard to the attitude to be
mgarding, the GovernmenVa I
aken I
wQpositioll but also in regard to the I
ttum policy of the, Prohibition party.
'The chair was occupledby the Pres- I
dezit, Mr._W. G. Medd, of Exeter, and t
w made a very important announce- ;
neut when he declared that he wished I
10 go on record as saying that he i
,vould in the next Provincial election,
)y vote and influence, -stand by the
)resent representative of his constitu- ,
. mey, Mr, N. W. Trewartha, provided ,
lat he would stand by the O.T.A. in
-he present crisis. This statement is
still more important when it is
mown that Mr. Kedd was Mr. Tre-
warthals opponent at the last Pro-
vincial election. Dr. F. J. Oaten, of
the Ontario Prohibition Union, was
present and gave leadership in the
discussions of the convention and was
assured, that Huron County would
stand bl their often repeated declara-
tions that they are in the fight until
complete Prohibition of the manufac-
ture, sale, importation, transportation
and exportation of all intoxicating
"
liquors for beverage purposes is so -
cured.
The following resolutions were
passed -
1. That we protest against the pro-
posed Amendment to the Ontario
Temperance Act, by legalizing the
sale of 4-4 per cent. beer, as a distinct
weakening of the Act, and a decided
concession to the liquor interests, and
contrary to the will of the Electorate
as expressed in the plebiscite of last
October.
2. That we urge the three members
for Huron, Messrs. J. Joynt, N. W.
Trewartha and E. R. W`igle, to oppose
this Amendment in the Legislature.
3. That we consider the exemption
of native wines a weak point in thq
Ontario Temperance Act, and asIK for
the removal of this exemption.
4. That we reaffirm our desire and
demand for Federal prohibition of the
manufacture, importation, exporta-
tion and transportation of all intoxi-
cating liquor for beverage purposes,
and urge the Domin I ion Government
to co-operate with Provincial Author-
ities in stamping out both bootlegging
and rum -running.
5. That in order to preserve the
interests of Prohibition in days to
come urgently call upon the elector-
ate, male and female, in the County
of Huron, which gave such an over-
whelming majority for Prohibition, to I
vote for candidates only, for all leg-
islative bodies, who will pledge them- I
selves to secure the highest interests
of Prohibition irrespective of political
party i
6. That we put ourselves on decid- I
ed record as emphatically opposed to
the introduction of 4.4 beer on these
serious grounds.
:(a) The highet scientific authority
declares 4.4 beer as undoubtedly in-
toxicating.
(b) The introduction of 4.4 beer
presents t1he grave peril of creating
an appetite and demand in our Prov-
ince for liquor of higher alcoholic
content,
(e) There is every reason to believe
that the morale of the O.T.A. will
be undermined and the way thrown
eness.
7. That we urge upon the Ontario
Prohibition Union the importance of
sending authentic information to the
Ontario Government providing that
4.4 per cent, beer is intoxicating ac-
co,rding to the best scientific authori-
ties,
8. That we endorse the suggestion
of the O.P.U. in using their best ef-
forts to secure in our Parliaments a
large block of individual prohibition
candidates.
9, That copies of these resolutions
be sent to the local members of the
Provincial Legislature and the Do-
minion Parliament.
