arly OW years, having founded the
It shell :.'Recorder in the year 1877

esetil 'about eighteen years ago, when
Sze retired from the newspaper busi-
xtl<ess:'" lie was a capable writer and
usually hit from the shoulder, and
oxpressed his views fearless of public
opinion. During his lifetime he con-
'tributed several interesting. short
sttories which were readily sought af-
ter by publishers of magazines. Art -
ides from his pen have frequently
found a place in. the leading papers
of this province. On retiring from
the publishing business he was en-
gaged as travelling representative of
the Muskoka Hospital, and being an
excellent speaker and widely acquaint-
ed with things in general, his worth
was soon recognized and he received
several increases in salary during the
time he held this office, retiring less
'than a year ago. He was prominent
iin politics and as a reward, coupled
-with his qualifications, he had been
appointed Canadian Commissioner to
the Glasgow Exhibition held some
years ago, and later was appointer
Commissioner to New . Zealand and
Australia. He was a man of wide
-visions and his travels took him to
many parts of the world and furnish-
ed much material for his writings and
lectures. As a lecturer he had few
equals and his services were ever in
demand, both at home and in distant
wields. Mr. Race was known by every
span, woman and child in this part of
Perth County, and he took 'great pride
in his home. He had been devoting
this summer to things of nature about
h is garden, particularly his great col-
lection of flowers, roses predominat-
ing. On Monday he was about as
usual and took his „morning walk to
the post office and appeared to be as
well as ever. Early Tuesday morning
be was attacked with indigestion and
medical assistance called, but all of
'no avail as he passed away about 10
.o'clock. He was about 78 years of
age, and his wife predeceased him by
some years. He leaves a family of
two sons and two daughters: Mr. W.
R Race,. superintendent of the School
f or- the Blind, at Brantford; Mr.
Chas. F. Race, publisher, Edmonton,
and Misses Winnie and Kathleen at
home.
CONSTANCE
Notes. -Mr. ,.Theo. Dexter returned
Rums on Saturday last from his- trip
to the Old Country, where he was
visiting his relatives whom he had
slot seen since he was a boy. He re-
ports having a good trip and a < fine
time. -Miss Donnelly, of Toronto, was
-visiting at the. home of Mr. and Mrs.
Henry Taylor last week. -Mr. and
Mrs. McDougall and Mrs. McIntyre,
aof St. Thomas, were visitors at the
borne of Mr. and . Mrs. Ed. Britton
last week, while taking in the Old
Boys -Miss Irene Carter, of Toronto,
spent the week end at the home of
her parents. -While coming" out of her
borne on Wednesday last week Mrs.
D. Tudor had the misfortune to slip
and fall, dislocating tier hip. She is
now getting along as well as can be
4 expected. -A family reunion 'was
held at the home of Mrs. A. Colclough
to celebrate her mother's 86th birth-
day last week. -'The Misses Living -
stones entertained a goodly number of
young people at their home on Mon-
day night.
Football. -On Thursday evening of
last week the Kinburn Kids met the
Stratford Protestors in Stratford and
a good exhibition of ball was witness-
ed. The game was fairly even, each
scoring a goal the first half. The
game ended in a draw score 1-1. The
-return match was played here on Mon-
day .evening. A light shower made
the ground a little sticky and the ball
somewhat slippy for first class bail
and to handicap our boys they began,
the match with ten men. However;
Kinburn were the aggressive on the
start off and in' less than two minutes
Geddes scored. Then the play was
back and forth and in a long shot
Stratford scored through the ball be}
trig slippy. The goal tender caught
lit but it slipped out of his hands.
The second half of the play was all
in Kinburn's favor, Stratford only
making three uns past centre. Our
boys had Stratford worn down and
made continuous rushes on their goal,
keeping the goalie busy. At hast,
with sorile pretty combination, W.
Dundas drove home a hot one, and at
the call of time the score stood 2-1
In favor of Kinburn. This make our
boys the winners, but Stratford has
put in a protest against two of our
team, who played with St. Columban.
'The likelihood will be the games will
have to be played over, but the W.
P. A. bad not decided fully at the
time of, writing.

In loving memory of William J. McLean,
who died august 18th, 1923.
His sufferings were great, the pain severe;
But he bore them with patience till God
drew near,
And then without bidding us a last farewell,
He quietly went home with God to dwell.
