45 somewhat scarce .in the north end,
: we will give some incidents of berry
picking. A young maiden had just
returned from the berry patch. Said
I to her, "How did .you get on to-
day." "I didn't get ,n%ny borries,"
she said, "and the rrwsq, uitoes bit ane
all over sty legs and a wasp stung
me." I thought I would ego berrying
myself one day, although not as young
as I used to be. I hied me across
the fields and abootvt 'half way be-
tw-eer, the i0tlh 'and 12th dines I found
a good, -sized berry patch. An elderly
. i tadey and her pretty little grand-
daughter of five or six summ errs were
there and with the aid of a couple o1
young lade lead got a good sized pail
.well filled. "We made a start at 7
o'clock this morning, far" .it is the
early bird. that gets the wort," sht
said. "Bort," said I, "*'hat about the
poor unfbxtunate worm." She either
did not hear me or else did not heed
me, flor she again repeated the story
' about the cleverness of the bird
which gat down off its perch in the
eerily morn. I saw some nice !berries
close aP,
,o to an old brush he Which 1
s think was placed there at the time
aw-rtiiPl down the
the Kelly's h'ad tits s
12th :line. I golt partly on the brust
pile to reach the berries, and ;heard a
peculiar hmemmin,g and buzzing be-
neath, and soon a number of winged
creatures came out in battle array
I retreated in good order but found 1
I was being pursued. There was woth-
ing for it but fight and it was ben
to one, I being the one, and, my only
weapon of defence was a sort fell
'hat. Had it ,been a straw 'rat, it
would have been sadly in need' orf re-
: 'pairs When the co'nfli'ct was over',
n When the bumlble bees darted for any
head and face I swatted therm good
and hard, and it ended in a draw,
rawly the bees had ,got eme away from
their nest and home without any
prospect of my returning that day
In the mddist of the struggle I wished
myself back in Toronto where there
' are no wi,td raspben•ies to -pick, or
bumble .bees to ,terrify people. I
then took a walik over to she other
side of the. tpateh and met a Lady and
snme -kids, who had' come from a
dl.:tance. The lady complained; she` said Ube villains of storekeepers had
raised the price sof sugar away up.
"Have they done that?" said f. "Yes,"
she said, "'they have just combined
too rob peapbe." I then told, ,her of
my adventuTr with t'he bees and she
said she 'tad' seen a snake over there.
The kiddies then' chipped in, telling
all about the snake, its color, its
dimensions, and the naughty way it
had of :4£{b'king nut its tongue.. I
told the lady it would have been
worse had .it been a irrouse. "Sure -
I ly," said .she., "there are not mice
in the berry patch. if I thought
there were mice -running narrund I
would not he here." D said I was
we'd aware of that. I then s -tan -ted
home wiltJh srrly berries, added some
water and some sugaT, codkede for
Ban (hour and had a dandy stew. Who
