Among the varieties that should be
started early indoors are Petunia.
Verbenas, Antirrhinum. (Snati7
dragon f. Pen tstenion glossinloides.
Salvia. ageratittra, Cerilaurea gyra-
aocarpa (Dusty hillier), Pyrethrum
(Golden Feather), and Lobelia. The
four kinds last named being of a
dwarf habit of growth are very urse-
ful for planting arouud the edge of
tiower borders. The Lobelia does
best in light soil and where It does
not get too much sun. The first nam-
ed varieties being of u taller habit
of growth (one or two feet) are bet-
ter suited for the centre of flower
beds or borders. There are no Shill -
tiler decorative plants that can be
raised from seed that will make a
finer and more contitiuous display in
the flowe: garden during summer
than those named, if the seed ls
started early in a window, hot bed,
or greenhouse, and the plants given
even ordinary caresand attention. if
sown out of door* early in May they
are very late iu flowering. All the
plants before named will aiso be
found very useful for helping to fill
up window and verandah boxes, rus-
tic stands, and hanging baskets. Be-
ing of a perennial or lasting nature,
many of them can also tui SUee'SS-
fully dug up in the alltunIn before
frosts, and placed in pots or boxes
for indoul decoration during early
NV lit ter, Those lath in flowering, such
as Aration, Snapdragon and Pen-
steinuns are esPvciallY useful for this
onrpose. Seed simuld be saved from
the bi.st types of all of the plants
mitneellkiring thi- summer months
far the next spring sowing. The
Dusty Miller does not seed the first
year, as a rule. A supply of cuttings
may also be obtained from most of
the plants named, if the old plants
are kept, in a cool window during
wi iter.
Tall Plants for centre.
if a ft w tall plauts for the centre,
or at the back of a large border are
required, plant a few seeds of the
iticiuus (Castor Oil 13eau). These
may be planted about an inch deep
In shallow boxes early indoors In
April, and transidanted singly into
3 or 31/2 -inch dower pots when three
or four leaves are started; m one -
bean may be put in the same sized
flower pot mentioned, and the plants
allowed to grow there un•t11 planted
out in the garden about the second
week in June. All of the needling
plants started early as suggested
should be transplanted when from
four to six leaves have developed In-
to good soil aingly into 2 or 3 -inch
pots or be set about 1 inches apart
in shallow, well drained boxes filled
with good soil.
:SUMO Annuals Suggested.
A few varieties of annuals such
' Asters, Chinese Pinks, Phlox
Drummondi, Zinnia, Balsams, Mari-
gold, Coreopsis, Scabiosa, Calendula
(pot Marigold), Mignonette. Sottisen-
thus (Butterfly flower) and other
varieties if needed, may be sown in-
doors early in April for early flower-
ing or they may be -sown out In the
border about the second week in May
for later flowering. A great many
annuals such at Poppies, Nastur-
tiums, Ten Week Stock, Silene Ar -
merle (Catchfly), GYsoPhila elegans,
Nigelia (Love in a Mist), Annual
Larkspur, and other similar annuals
do not transplant or succeed as, well
when sown indoors. It is best to sow
these last named out of doors early.
In May where they are to grow.
Sweet Alyssum and the, Purple and
White Candytufts are among the
best dwarf edging annuals we have,
and should also be sown out of doors
early in May. Early sown Sweet
Alyssum is often' attacked by 'the
small black flea beetle, that coin-
pletely destroys the plants. Plants
from seed sown later (end of May)
are seldom attacked. The best retn-
edly for this flea beetle Is to spray
the plants with a solution of Paris
Green, made by first .well mixing a
' small teaspdonful of Paris Green (or
Arsenate of Lead) In a tablespoonful
or two of cold water, then add water
to make one gallon. Dusting the
plants with Pyrethrum Powder,
wood ashes, or soot are .also good
remedies. Another good annual, es-
pecially for a hot, sunny Position is
Portulacca. The seed is best sown
broadcast on finely raked soli, and
the seed raked In very lightly. Thin
the plants later bn from four to six
tactics apart. If you have a dry, hot,
sunny position where very few plants
will grow, try some Portulaeca, If a
few early Nasturtium plaids, or of
any climbing annual are wanted for
window or verandah boxes, put two
or- three seeds in soil in three-hach
pots in April, they will transplant
much better from pots than from
boxes. Nasturtiums are one of the
best annuals for window boxes. The
seed may also be sown rather thick-
ly in window boxes out of doors ear-
ly in May, and the plants thinned to
about six inches apart later on. All
annuals may be ,transplanted to ad-
vantage singly into small pots.
This list of annuals given may be
extended considerably, those men-
tioned are among the most satisfac-
tory for the average flower grower.

There are laws in Zion City each
as probably exist nowhere, else on
earth. One cannot drink liquor; he
cannot smoke; he cannot take medi-
cine; the cannot have a Aortal.. he
cannot eat pork or oyeters.....There
are no moving pictures or other
places of amusement. Tbere Is no
baseball. There are no sinful card
games or dances. The feminine
styles are severely censored. There
, are no short skirts, but on the other
hand, there ,is ma filmy, peekaboo
hosiery. There are no low-neok
dresses, but still there are po balls
to wear them at. There are no
loafers or loiterers. Everybody is
hustling GO that he can go home
and eat his specified meal and go
to bed and forget his troubles.
There are plenty of churches and
religious gatherings and no tack of
ukases from Voliva, who was for-
merlY an Indiana preacher.
Zion City is run this wa" because
all the land is vested in Voliva. It
is never seld. It is leased. On
one occasion, through a never -to -be -
forgotten error, a man bought a lot
outright and opened a drug store.
The town was in an uproar until
Voliva bought it back with all its
immoral drugs. The City Council'
is cor p,•sed of Voliva's favorites.
The Magistrates are nominated by
him, and any laws that he deems
necessary for the further uplift of tire
in habitants are passed. Most of
them have been upheld by superior
courts. But in Zion City there are
hundreds of people who are not
Zionists, but who 'have been attracted

Zion Cityt half way between Chi-
cago and Milwaukee, on the shore of
Lake Michigan, is one of the most
remarkable communities upon the con-
tinent. It is from Zion City that
Rov. Wilbur Glenn Voliva issues his
occasional thunders against modern
errors of dress and ancient errors of
science, It was from Zion City that
Rev. Voliva recently announced that
the earth was flat, and the sun, moan
and stars were hung above ,t in a
solid blue sky, just as ch eliets
-might be hung from a ceiling. He
said that any other conception of
the universe was at variance with
the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.
This was no news to the children of
Zion City, for they have been taught
this idea of the earth ever since
Zion city was established. As for
the adult members of tire com-
munity, they accept implicitly what
their Overseer has to say, for they
.have acquired the habit, and it is
unwholesome to 'argue with him.
Zion City is a momunont to one
most , curious religious
fanatics of modern times, to wit, John
Alexander Dowie, who went to the
United States from Australia penni-
less, and inside of ten years was
one of the best known men in the
country 111113 the possessor of vast
wealth. At the time, this - head-
quarters were in Chicago, and his
taxes were so heavy that -he de-
cided he would establish a town of
his own, _where, if any. taxes were
to be paid, they would be paid to
him. So he sent out real estate
agents and they bought him several
thousand acres of farm land, which'
was to become the city of the elect.
He appealed to his followers, who
numbered thousands, and they sold
their -possessions in other cities and
-moved ou to Zion 'City. He estab-
lished various industries, and in
many respects showed exceedingly
good judgment. ;
A11 went well until Dowie, with
3,000 of his band, descended boon
New York with the avowed purpose
WHY DOES CHLOROFORM PUT
PEOPLE TO SLEEP?
Though we are accustomed to
connect sleep with the closing of the
eyelids and "the relaxation of the
body,' unconsciousness is really a
matter of the brain—just • as are
pain or. pleasure. Other portions
of the 'body may reflect the sensa-
tion er may react to it, but it is ithe
brain which is primarily responsible
and it is upon the brain that chloro-
form and similar anesthetics work
so rapidly.
In taking chloroform or ether the
nose and mouth are epvered with a
large cone and the patient la in-
structed to breathe deeply so that.
the fumes of these drugs may reach
all parts of the lungs and, passing
into the blood, may be transferred
as quickly as 'possible to the brain
where it immediately puts a portion
of this organism "to sleep." making
it possible far the most delicate op-
erations to ,be performed without the
slightest sensation of pain. As Orin
as the effects of the chloroform have
worn off, however, the brain coin-
svences once more to -make use of
the natural oxygen in the blood and
tfhe patient wakes up or comes out
from under the influence of the
drug, the brain resuming its normal
functions and reacting in the normal
way. There 'are a number of other
drugs which will have the same ef-
fect as chloroform or ethet but, as
these -are the ,easiest to administer
and the most rapid in their action,
they -are generally used for surgical
operations where freedom from pain
and penfect relaxation are essen-
tial.
