One such girl came out of the Mid-
dle West a few years ago. Iter en-
gagements were few and far between.
Her good sense told her that, with all
her personality and vivacity, she was
not the type that develops into a star.
So she looked about for the next
thing to du.
She found art overworked and popu-
lar star sighing over a stack of un-
opened mail. The girl offered to sort
the matt for a small fee. She soon
learned that most of the letters re-
quired for reply only an autographed
photograph. She arranged these let-
ters' in one and the star's photo-
graphs for autographing in another.
In a third pile she laid the letters
which she felt sure she could answer
briefly for the player. The fourth
pile, a very small one, would require
the personal attention of the star.
When the latter returned to her
dressing room after her day's work
she regarded her intelligently sorted
mail with relief. In a few days she
was gleefully relating to her fellow -
players how she had dropped ;the
burden of correspondence.
To -day this girl handles the mail
for many stars, and maintains the
most successful bureau of public
stenographers in Hollywood. She has
never learned shorthand, but she has
learned how to draw and to hold busi-
ness, and how to direct the work of
stenographers and typists.
Her name is Peggy Hagar, and
she is president and the inspiration
of the Studio Club, maintained for
those girls struggling for recognition
on the screen.

AVOID PAIN
This One Tells How She
Was Benefited by Taking
Lydia E. Pinkham's Veg-

Regina, Sask.- "For two years 1 suf-
fered from periodic paina and nausea
so i was unable to get around. My
mother had me take Lydia E. l'inkham's
Vegetable Compound, and 1 am much
better and able to go about all the time,
which I could not do before. 1 recom-

if I know they suffer the same way, and
you may publish my letter if it will help
any one, as I hope it. will.” -Miss Z. G.
BLACKWELL, 2078 Osier Place, Regina,
Sask.
If every girl who sufTers as Miss Black-
well did, or from irregularities, painful
periods, backache, aideache, dragging
down pains, 'inflammation or ulceration
would only give this famous root, and
herb remedy a trial they would soon
find relief from such puttering.
It hardly seems possible that there is
a woman in this country who will con-
tinue to Rifler without. giving Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Corn mind a trial
-after all the evidence that is continually

"What can be average girl do be-

Om the haslet lot alone I found 200
"average” girls doing "average" but
interesting things. It is said that in
and around Loa Angeles fully 4,000
women and girls axe employed behind
the screen. They range from girls
who sort otllee mall at $15 a week to
designers of ,--' tumes who earn $15,-
0,10 a year. The average wage is said
to he $30 a o•eek which means that
these girls bi• ind the screen earn a
total of '<.12o/„1.0 a week, $480,000 a
month, or ntu', than six trillion dol-

To us she explained:
"After I have seen a plan of the

play, 1 start to gather the furniture,
hangings, rugs, .pictures and orna-
ments. This does not mean a round

searching through shops in Lou

need can be rented.
And a group of college girls yon
will meet next, in the library or re-

To -day, when a producer sends a
new scenario to the art director of
his studio, that official turns to the

by whose aid ho can reproduce ac-

BURNS' TRIBUTE TO TITLE
It is seldom in these days, says the
Dundee Courier, that a hitherto un-
published poem of the great poet
Burns comes to light. But Mrs. John
Moffatt, St. Andrew's, is the happy
possessor of such. The poem below
was copied by Mrs. Moffatt's grand-
father, the late Mr. Edward Sander -
.un well nigh 100 years ago.
The verses are prefaced with the
following words. ---"Composed by Rob-
ert Burns, and presented to the noble-
man addressed upon being called up
11roe e servants' hall (where he had
been enl to dine along with them)
to a d to the entertainment of his
t mummy. :Jong with which cam pall l'
he had been asked til go in an es-
rIn'sinn 1.1 rho 115,55 Rock. On present-
ing shins lie pal un 1115 hal, turned
n his heel and retired.”
The verses are as follows:—
"My Lord, 1 xvsmld not fill your chair,
Thu' ye be proudest noble's heir,
1 came this night to join your feast
As equal of the hest at least!
'Tis true that cash with me is scant,
And titles trifles that I want.
The King has never made me kneel
To stamp my manhood with his seal
But what of that? The Kinpr on high
Who took less pains with you than I,
Has filled my bosom and my mind
With something better in its kind
Than your broad acres, something
which
I cannot well translate to speech.
But by its impulse I can know
'Tis deeds, not birth, that make men
low,
Your rank, my Lord, is but a Mani
But mine, thank heaven, is all my
own!
A peasant, 'Lia my pride to be;
Look round and round your hall and
see
Who boasts a higher pedigree!
I was notl fit, it seems, to dine
With these fox-hunting heroes fine. i
But only cams to bandy jests
Among your Lordship's hopeful,
guests.
There must be here some sad mis-
take—
I would not play for such a stake. I
Be a buffoon for drink and meat,
And a poor Earl's tag -paid seat!
No, die my heart, ere such a shame
Descenta on Robert Burns' name."
