Sir George Tryon is the fourth British
admiral who has lost his life by shipwreck
or disaster unconnected with warfare since
the beginning of the last century. In Octo-
ber, 1707, Sir Cloudesley Shovel shared the
fate of the crew of the Association ; and on
August 29. 1782, Admiral Kempenfeldt was
drowned by the "heeling" over " of the
Royal George. The great loss of life by the
sinking of the Victoria is ascribed to her
suddenly heeling over as in the case of the
Royal George ; but the recent catastrophe
was, by comparison, not nearly as appalling
as the shipwreck of the St. George, the
Defence, and the Hero, on the coast of Jut-
land in 1811, when Admiral Reynolds and
two thousand sailors perished.

Queer Things About Frogs.
A remarkable thing about these creatures
is that the larger part of the breathing is
done through the skin. In fact, it is said
that this supply of air is a necessary addi-
tion to that taken in by ordinary breathing,
as the latter does not supply sufficient air
to support -life in a frog. Another peculiar
thing about the skin of a frog is its power-
ful absorption of water. This is due,
of course, to the numberless minute pores
with which their skin is provided. It has
been proved that a frog can thus soak up
half of its weight of water in an hour. The
soaking of water is what gives the frog's
skin, such a cold, clammy, and uncanny
feeling when handled, and it explains a
strange thing. Though a bull -frog were
poked with a red-hot iron, it would not
feel it enough to move out of its tracks, for
the moisture on the skin forms a kind of
film of vapor between it and the iron, which
it takes time to heat through, and so the
frog would not feel pain from the heat..
Yet, if hot water is dropped upon him, he
will instantly jump from pain, as this heat
at once strikes into the skin. A frog has
another safeguard against drying up—that
is, a kind of interior sack for storing water.
Like the camel, it thus keeps a -supply
which carries it over many, a dry place,
when it would otherwise lose all its mois-
ture and die. The water is as pure sad
tasteless as that of any spring.—[St. Nicho-
las.

The little plant which is said by scientist
to cause blindness belongs to the lowes
order of fungi. The propagation—simply
by division—is very rapid, and its growth
in the tissues covering the eyeball causes
such irritation and congestion as to .cut off
the supply of nutriment to the clearer part
of the eye, so that the local death of the
part, with consequent destruction of the
power of vision, follows often in a few days
or even hours. So far as is known it is
carried only by infection—it must be plant-
ed directly on a suitable soil before it can
grow. This, in brief, is what is known of
the bacterial cause of blindness.

Blast Furnaces 1400 B C.
At a recent meeting of the Palestine Ex-
ploration Fund in London Mr. Bliss .de-
clared that the discovery of the mound of
Tel Hesy, in Southern Palestine, would en-
able the explorers to "dig up the sources
of the Book of Genesis." Amid- all the
evidence discovered by Mr. Bliss of the
civilisation of that remote age—wine press-
es,alkali burning and innumerable others—
by far the most curious is the disclosure of
an iron blast furnace, so arranged as to
give strong evidence of being, intended to
heat, in its descent, a blast of outside air
forced through passages, before entering
the chamber at the level where tuyeres are
usually found. " If this theory be correct,"
says. Mr. Bliss, " we find 1400 years before
Christ the use of the hot-air blast -instead
of cold. air, which is called . a modern im-
