The Un- ions large score was made up almost en- tirely by earned runs. They batted very heavily, while their opponents fielded as well as any club could have done under the circumstances, On the other hand Mclardy was pitching the game of his life and in the first innings he delivered just nine balls—three to each batter—and all of them were struck at—and missed. Of the two runs Lis- towel secured one was on a passed bail by Sanderson, who was playing with a sprained ankle, and the other by a des perate run by Large who was on flail d with two out and two strikes called on the'batter. We are unable to give the score in full but by innings it was as follows : Harriston. W hitiaufer t ch Hone { Strenry Henry Lemon giving a nice exhibition of. Highland dances, the ground was prepared for the foot ball match between the Rangers and Brussels teams. Both clubs had a few outside players, Bremner (Belmore) and Fyfe of the Mount Forest team assisting the Rangers, and Moen, the great Sea - forth player, and Mitchell and Large, of the champion Listowels, playing with Brussels. Then it travelled in all directions, some fine work being done by both teams, till half-time was called, neither side scoring. The Gerrie boys played this half with the sun in their eyes and the wind against them, and they did not disappoint their friends who expected better results during the second half. But the Brussels boys were not discouraged, and they made a very fast pace for their opponents, sev- eral times giving the lively little Gorrie goal -keeper plenty to do. The splendid combination work of Darroch and Wat- r-ters toil, however, and when either of them got the ball it generally travelled to the genial Mitchell's sacred territory and that dexterous athlete more Than once showed how he had helped win the coveted district championship for -Listowel. Very few places in Canada held as large and enthusiastic .a demonstration as that which occurred in the pretty little village -of Wroxeter ls;st Monday. Fordwich. Editor GAZETTE,—We were greatly ,surprised in looking over the local news from Lakelet in your paper last week, in :which your correspondent charges our boys with making many weak and groundless excuses for not giving them a game after . driving all the way from Lakelet. We did not think that your correspondent would make a state- ment which he knew to be otherwise. Had he given a true statement of the case and not presented the matter as he did, throwing all the blame on the boys of this place, we would have let the matter drop, but as it is, we cannot permit it to pass without contradiction. We.nnderstood the preceding Satur- day tinct Lakelet football team "was to be down the following Saturday to play the return, but on Tuesday we received word from Mr. Darroch that we might consider the game cancelled for the present if we played certain men, who belonged to our team. We sent him word immediately that we world play those men and considered the game for that day c.incellod, and asked them to come on the 1st of July, We did not secure word that they were coming till about half an hour be, fore they arrived.. As your correspondent admits, thee took us rather unawares, and what their object of this was we leave to the pub- lic to decide, but -they might have given a satisfactory excuse. Your correspondent states that the Fordwich boys did not set forth one good reason for not playing but all were weak and. groundless. This is not se, One of our best players was away, while ethers, lionowing of the match, had made engagements which they would not withdraw, and did not strike out . for Harriston as he says. The managing committee and captain did not send after any men and would not allow us to play as they thought it was a ruse to take as unawares. Neither did men arrive as he states. We hope the next time he wiilpresent matters to the public as they are. FAIR PLAY. Wilson Bros. are having a new clean- ing machine and a new roller placed in their roller mill.
