school,_ are at present in Walkerton,
writing at the entrance exams. Arthur
Mertz, also from this school, is trying
the leaving examination.
Mr. J. D. Kinzie, of the Green Valley
farm, lot 6 con. 6, brought a bunch of
flax to the ;GAZETTE office, on Monday,
the stalks of whichmeasured 851 inches
in length. this is a pretty good length
for this tinae of year. The flax crop in
this section is not yet in bloom, but the
yield promizes well this season.
On Tuesday atternoon, shortly before
&o'clock, and while the thunder storm
was in --progress, the Separate School, in
this village, was struck by -lightning,
fortunately doing but little damage.
The chimney was somewhat shattered
and the fluid passing down- the pipes,
injured the stove slightly. The teaeh-
ers were in an adjoining room, near
enough to feel the sheck, IllIt the school
room was vacant, the children having
been dismissed some Urea previously.
Mr. J. L. Titmus, the new grocer, has

may on Tuesday, July 4, at 8 p.m.; has,
itis claimed, won the especial approval
of Mrs. Harriet Beecher Stowe, the im-
mortal authoress of that world -famed
drama, from the fact of Manager
Burtch's adhmence to the original text
_which is a complete deviation from the
custom of other "Uncle Tom" managers
who:interlope so many attempted gags,
stale jokes and vulgar witticisms into
their renditions that_ scarcely a vestige
is left of that niver-to-las-forgotten work.
