Early in life Mrs. Furrey became a
member of filtt Andrew's church and
her devoted Christian life was in
keeeieg with her profession and was
much' and desex.vedlY loved by all who
knew her. She has been removed
from a true and loving husband and
a little daughter of 13 months, who
will never know the tender love of a
-mother, but such are the uncertainties
of life and the inscrutable ways of
an all wise Providence. The sincer-
est sympathy that litiman heart can
bestow will be extendedtoMr. Furrey
in this the hour of the most severe
bereaventent which can befall a man
thitt life. The deceased is survived

daughter, and also by her aged fa-
ther, two brothers and three sisters,

lomef Mrs. Ed. Cudmore, ef Peach
land, B. C.; Mrs. Peter Caarteron, of
Kindersely, and Miss Margaret, at
home. The funeral took place from
St. Andrew's Church on Friday last,
the services being conducted by ley.
Mr, McFarlahe of Bayfield, assisted
by Rev. Mr. Foster, of Varna. The
remains were interred in Baird's cern-
etery, beside those of her mother and
other members of the family deceas-
ed, and the esteem in, which the de-
ceased was held.as well as the sym-
pathy felt for the bereaved family,
was fittingly manifested by the large
attendance at the funeral. The pall
bearers were James B. McLean', Law-

Jones. Among the friends from a
distance who attended the funeral,

Briefs. -The Annual Sunday School
Christmas entertainment of the Meth-
odist church was held on Thursday
evening of last week in the church,
when there was S. very large attend-
ance, and a most splendid literary
and musical programme carried out
very largely by the children and older
members of the school. The super-
ietendent. Mr. J. W. Ortwein. very
ably and pleasantly performed the
duties of chairman, and Sunday School
scholars did greatcredit, both to
themselves and their' teachers, and
we regret that space at our disposal
will not allow us to give a more
extended report. The proceeds
amounted to over $40. ---The cantatta
entitled i "The Messiah's Coming,"
was given by the choir of Carmel
Presbyterian church on Sabbath even-
ing last, was a great musical treat
and was enjoyed by an appreciative
audience, that not only illied the audi-
torium of the spacious church, but
also the 'aisles, gallery and draw
seats- 4nd room was certainly at a
preminm. This splendid cantatta
was rendered solely by the splendid
choir with the help of only one mem-
ber not of the choir, but who often
takes part, namely Mr. W. 0. Good-
win, and where so many took part so
ably and the cantatawas composed
of _solos, duetts and quartettes.
We feel it would not be well to at-
tempt to particularize, but may be
permitted to make mention of the
leader and pipe organist, namely Mr:
and Mrs. Milne Rennie, who did their
parts so admirably, and on whom the
strain and responsibility of the suc-
cess of this fineeproduction so largely
rested. Every Dart was well render-
ed and the splendid choruses showed
to great advantage the fine training
of the large choir and how well their
yokes blended and could not well be
surpassed. So much was this fine
Cantatta appreciated, that the choir
have been pressed to render it again,
and have consented to do so on the
second Sunday evening of the New
Year. It was announced on Sunday
evening that it would be given the
following Sunday evening, namely the
first one in the New Year, but the
_date has been changed to that of
the second Sunday evening. - Mr.
Wilfred Wood, of Saskatchewan, is
visiting relatives and friends in
Hensall and vicinity. -Mr, S. M.
Wickens, who has .so ably acted as
manager of the Sterling Bank during
the past year, has severed his connec-
tion with the bank and has secured
what promises to be a better paying
position with a financial company, and
will have his head quarters at Lon -
dote Mr. Wickens will be muck miss-
ed from ur village as one of our
good business men, but his wife and
family will remain here until spring.
-Mrs. John Elder has returned from
Toronto, where she had been spend-
ing a week or so with relatives. -
Mr. Geo. Chelew, of Toronto, is the
new manager of the Sterling Bank,
succeeding Mr. Widkens. and comes,
highly recommended, and will no
doubt give every satisfaction to the
bank and its patrons. -Our business
men report the Christmas trade as
very good,esand displayed fine stocks.
-Mr. Robert Bonthron, who haVbeen
so seriously ill for the past month or
