One day Flynn) entered his black speed -marvel in a • country ' race- meeting, and the residents, not being over impressed by the ` "appearance of the animal, promptly proceeded . to place their money on the- local fav- orities. Flynn took all the bets of- fered at good figures, but Judge Mc- Manamee, regarded as an oracle in all matters relating to horses, spot- ted the deception at once. Looking over the field,- the Judge turned to the local bettors and remarked: "Gentlemen, there's ; a dark horse in this race that will make some of you sick before supper." The Judge was right. "Dusky Pete" laid well back until the field straightened out in the stretch, and then went to the front with at rush, winning as he - pleased. Dear Expositor: - What a delightful season this is. I am not altogether a pessimist, but I know we will -pay up for this by and by. As I write the street in front of my window is lively with BRUCEFIELD (Too late for last week.) Notes.—On Saturday afternoon the little Disciples Mission Bandl held their annual Thankoffering. They were out in goodly numbers Mrs. cry out, "Gee, but this is fine; four holidays in a row." The Teachers took Thursday and Friday to hold gatherings of their own, which made 60,000 pupils to rejoice. I was at an entertainment pf a benevolent nature one evening resent- ly. The proceed§ were to aid little .children who are orphans or who - lave thriftless parents. It partook of the nature of a concert, and many -of the old favorites of fifty years ago -were sung, among the number being Annie Laurie, Listen to the Mocking Bird, Killarney, Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, Loch Lamond. and We Left Old Ireland Because We Were Poor. It concluded with "When You and I Were Young, -Maggie," and lastly the "Maple Leaf Forever,". which is more modern. The vocalists .excelled in the most charming of all accomplishments. The admission was half a dollar and it was well worth 1t;. There are three soldiers in the field for North East Toronto in the 'local house, a Soldier -Labor, a Con- servative and a Liberal. Their names lire Higgins, Lewis and Kippen. Elec- tions are uncertain and I will make no predictions. There was a big commotion here. over the action of the Board of Com- merce in regard to sugar. A tP h indg d a •znents were being made monster indignation meeting in Massey Hall when word came that the Government' had taken the mat- ter in band. It is well they did for 1 fear the people could not have been 'kept in bounds. I would like if some reader of The Expositor could tell us what good this so called Board of (Commerce has ever been to the peo- -pie of this country. I will now{ ask for the indulgence of your readers while referring -to a personal matter. .Some individual up there in Huron County started a re- port that I had got married to a "Toronto lady since coming here a -year or two ago, so I have been in- formed. It is, perhaps, my misfortunes that the story is false. No less a personage than the late Sir Wilfrid 'Laurier, on the occasion of his golden wedding, when. being copcagratulated said, "Everyone of you fellows who are unmarried get a wife. You are snot living right without her." But it is not this side of the question that I shall deal with. When I was a young lad I attended a Union Sun- -day School held in the old log school house and 'I recollect reading near the end of the sacred volume, that all liars will have their portion in a .certain place, where they need not worry about the price of coal or fire- wood. And further on it toldv f1 the -companions which will be g those who loveth and maketh a lie, and we have read in the same book of a certain man and woman( who died very suddenly because they would not tell the truth. There 'now is a little sermon with all seats free and no collection.—J. J. L McMillan, of Egmondville, gave a splendid address. She spoke first on the "Buring Bush," the emblem of Presbyterianism. There the repre- sented mission workers as candles, some are already little and before long will go out, other candles just lit will last a long time. This she represented as the little band .work- ers for Jesus, who will take the place of the workers of to -day. There was suitable singing, -and a lunch was served. The offering, in- cluding our junior members, was a liberal one. The band will now close for - this year.—Lawrence Reid, of Goderich, who has been visiting at the home of his father, Charles Reid, has returned to Goderich. Austin Wheeler and Ross Chapman have been appointed from our Sunday School to attend the boys' mock parliament at Exeter.—Sydney Thomson, who has been at the- railway .station at Clin- ton training for a station agent, has been sent to Kincardine, where he has had an advancement, on which we congratulate him.—Rainey Arm- strong has had a sale; of farm stook, etc., and has sold his fine farm for over $8,000.—Miss Agnes Beatty is visiting friends at Westminster. X25.00 to X65.00 Winter Overcoats for Men and Boys at Practically Old Prices el 1 RICH, RED BLOOD NECESSARY TO HEALTH When the Blood Becomes Weak and Watery a Tonic is Needed to Build it Anew. Why are weberg constantly told that good, health -giving blood must be bright red? What has color to do with the quality? Just this—the oxygen in the air is the great sup- porter of all organic life. One fune-_ tion of the blood is to take the oxy- gen from the air—which it meets in the lungs and deliver it to the tissues of the body. When the blood, filled with . life-sustaining oxygen, is sent out by the heart, it is bright red. When it returns, impure and deriv- ed of oxygen it is dark. You will see, therefore, that there are two prime requisites of health, pure air and bright, red blood—the pure air to furnish the oxygen, the rich red blood to carry it where it is needed. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills make your blood rich and red because they increase its power to carry oxy- gen, actually making it so much more able to carry increased life and strength to every organ in the body. Pale, anaemic people whose nerves are on edge, whose cheeks are pale, and who tire out easily, should try Dr. Williams' Pink Pills, and note the steady improvement that follows their use. A Case in point is that of Mrs.- J. P. Roulston, South River, Ont., who says:—"About two years ago my system was in a badl down condition, and I kept growing worse all the time until I could hard- ly ardly do my housework. I had severe headaches, and pains across my back and under my left shoulder. I did not sleep well_ and would feel just.: as tired when I got up in the morning as when I went to bed. Life seemed a burden. I had taken doctor's medi- : cine for a long time, but • it did not meet my case, at least it- did me no good. Then as a result of reading about Dr. Williams' Pink Pills I decided to try them. When I had taken -a couple of boxes I felt much better, and when I had taken five boxes more - 1 felt that -I was again a well woman. I have not since felt any return of the trouble and I advise all women' who are broken in health to give Dr. Williams' ° Pink Pill's a trial." These pills are sold by all medicine dealers or will be sent by mail, post paid, at 50 cents a box or six boxes or $2.50, by The Dr. Williams' Medi- cite Co., Brockville, Ont. Boys' Overcoats WHY DO WE SPEAK OF A "DARK t'HORSE"? - This expression, heard so frequent- ly during political campaigns and in the vicinity of race tracks, dates back to an occurrence in Kentucky some fifty years or more ago. At that time there was a racing charac- ter by the name' of Sam. Flynn who traded in horses and generally man- aged to have a speedy mount or two which he used whenever oneey during his ld locLte some easy. travels. The best of his stable was a coal -black stallion named "Dusky Pete," -almost a thoroughbred and well fitted to travel in the fastest of racing company. Flynn, however, kept "Pete" well under cover, and one of his tricks was to saddle the Sweater Coats FOR MAN, WOMAN OR CHILD What beauties we have for this s season—bright checks and delightful two-color combination shades, plain - colors, in all lengths and sizes, with belts and sashes, also Norfolk styles. - $2.50 to $12.00 • Fancy Tweeds and Wor- steds, made in Pinchback, B,lte^,s and Ulster Styles, Well lined and cleverly cut, all well made of good strong cloths andwe have them in all sizes.
