WHY DO OBJECTS AT A
DISTANCE APPEAR SMALLER?
Examination, of the structure of
-the eye shows that the lens—the part
through which we see—is convex
in shape, thus bending the rays of
Fight .from all sides inward toward
a central point. As a result, the
lutes -Of sight which, start from the
small image of the object made by
the eye -lens on the retima, passing
through the central or "nodal"
point, must continually diverge as
they approach the real objects, and
this diversion naturally becomes
=greater with increased distances.
If our eyes were constructed with-
out these convex lenses, and the
rays of light touched the retina in
parallel instead of converging or '
diverging lines, the apparent size of
an object wou}d not be altered by
distance and we could not ,see all
of any object which was larger than
the diameter of the pupil of the eye.
-Our eyes would furnish us with no
.'basis for judging distance, and we
would be conscious of nothing about
us except circular pathos • of vary-
ing colors and brightness, which we
• would have to join together in order
to understand the. color and form of
the world.
With our convex lenses, however,
a small circle, held some two_feet
from the eye, appears to be of the
same size as the moon,, which is
2,160 miles in diamlater, and; our
forefinger, when' held close td the
face, is apparently as tall as the
Washington Monument.

DYE -WORKERS . SUSCEPTIBLE
TO CANCER.
With the .great growth of the- dye
industry in the United States, some
observations by several German
physicians, to which the Journal of
the American Medical Association
draws attention, are important. These
observers agree that the workers in
dye factories are peculiarly liable_ to
cancer of the bladder, and it appears
that anilin is the one dyestuff that
is . to blame.
The striking thing about these
cancers is the long time that elapses
before they develop. Ordinarily the
first symptoms appear about fifteen
years after the first exposure; in
some cases as late as twenty -dight
years, but. in one case cancer develop-
ed after -only two . years. Sometimes
the man in whom the cancer develops
has not been working among dyestuffs
for ten years or more.
Owing to this long period of incu-
bation it is not possible to state how
large a proportion of dye workers
develop cancer, but Dr. ehlassauer of
Frankfort had twentyeight cases
from .one factory . employing about
105 hands,
The anilin may be absorbed through
the skin and lungs, possibly through
dust being swallowed or vapor enter-
ing the mouth.
Strange to say, dye workers are
no more susceptible than other men
to cancer except in the bladder,
Time alone can tell whether the
large number of men and women who
have entered dye works in America ;
during the war will show similar
susceptibility.
