Union Stock Yards, Toronto, August 10. - The dullness that marked the close of last week's trading continued in evidence to -day as regards all classes of cattle. A fairly heavy run added to a lot of poor quality left -overs provided a fine chance for the buyers to stand out for a cut of fully $1.00 on all classes, and this offer carried where sales were made except in the case of choice butcher cows. Except in the case of an odd few best steers -and heifers sold for $14 per awe., while average quality heavy butcher cattle brought $11.50. Lighter weight steers and heifers sold very slowly, at from $9.50 to $11. The fact that only S00 head had gone over the scales by noon, out of a run of 3,684 cattle, goes to show tl.e very draggy condition of the trade. The receipts were 210 cars, with 3,684 cat- tle, 785 calves, 1,331 hogs and 3,011 sheep .and lambs. The quotations were: Choice heavy steers, .$14.50 to $15.001 good heavy steers, $14.00 to $14.25 ; butchers' cattle, choice, $13, to $13.50 ; do., good, $12.00 to $18.00 ; do., medium, $10 to $11.00 ; do., common, $7,50 to $9.00 ; bulls, choice, $10,00 to $11.00 ; do., good, $9.00 to $9.50 ; do., rough, $6.00 to $8.00 ; butchers' cows, choice, $10.50 to $11.50 ; do., good, $9.00 to $10.00; do. common, $6.50 to $7.50 ; stockers, $9.00 to $11.00; feeders, $11.00 to $12.50; canners and cutters, $4.50 to $5.50 ; milkers, good to choice, $100 to $165; do., common and med- ium, $65 to $75; springers. $90 to $165; Iambs, yearlings, $10.50 to $12.50 ; do., spring, $12.00 to $15.50; calves, good to choice, $16.50 to $18.50 ; sheep, $6.50 to $9.50 ; Hogs, fed and watered, $20.75 ; do. weighed off cars, $21.00 ; do. f.o.b., $19.75 ; do., do., country points, $19.50. Use Fertilizer for your Fall Wheat; it will pay. Wheat is worth more money now than dur- ing the war and will be for some time yet. Grow wheat not only for the need of it, but for the money there is in growing it. Use dry and fairly rich land and it is els sure a crop as any you can grow. Use a light coat of manure, if you have it, and a hundred and fifty or two hundred pounds of a - good balanced fertilizer and you will get better results than. from manure alone. If you have not manure use a Iittle more fertilizer; it will ripen earlier and help it to fill better. Acid phosphates give good re- sults on clover or manured land, but it uses up the humus that should be spared for the next crop. A balanced fertilizer is generally the most profitable. Fertilizer is dearer than it was but not nearly as dear as wheat in proportion. All registered brands guaran- teed. I have different brands and will be pleased to `sell you what you think will suit your land best, JAMES COWAN,. Phone 219. Seaforth. CONSULTING -.ENGINEERS The E. A.
