Whaley.—The old friends of Rev. S. M. Whaley will learn with deep regret of his untimely death, which occurred on Friday morn- ing while visiting friends in Markham and Scarboro, near Toronto. He was found dead in bed by his brother-in- law, Mr. Peter Ressor. It is suppos- ed death was due to a stroke. He was born in Markham township fifty- nine years ago, and was educated at Markham high school, the University of Toronto and. Knox Cellege, and held several pastorates, St. Helens being among them. He was called to Durham in 1914. He was always successful in his ministry and was regarded as a powerful preacher. He • is survived by his wife and several brothers and sisters. ST. COLUMBAN Notes.—Miss G. Meag,her, of Dublin, spent a few days in our burg last week, the guest of Miss S. Queenan. —A very nice picnic was held in -Mr. Owen Hart's bush on the first. A 'number of the parents attended and greatly enjoyed the afternoon, after which a fine lunch was served by the pupils—Aeumber of the young men spent the first in Stratford.—Mr. George Malone and Maurice Dalton renewed old acquaintances in Strath- roy over the holiday.—Haying has commenced and although the quantity is small the quality is very good. The market for calves was very weak, 16c per pound ruling as the top price. Hogs were strong at last week's price of $2(0 fed and watered, and a few choice lots brought as high, as 420.50. The receipts were 260 cars, with 4,456 cattle, 1,265 calves, 2,567 hogs and 1,539 sheep and Iambs.
