old geldings for $600. Mr. Thomas
Livingstr sold a four year old geld-
ing for $300 and Mr. Peter Haw-
thorne sold a five year old gelding for.

ST. HELENS
Death of Rev. S. M. Whaley.—The
old friends of Rev. S. M. Whaley will
learn with deep regret of his untimely
death, which occurred on Friday morn-
ing while visiting friends in Markham
and Scarboro, near Toronto. He was
found dead in bed by his brother-in-
law, Mr. Peter Ressor. It is suppos-
ed death was due to a stroke. He
was born in Markham township fifty-
nine years ago, and was educated at
Markham high school, the University
of Toronto and. Knox Cellege, and
held several pastorates, St. Helens
being among them. He was called to
Durham in 1914. He was always
successful in his ministry and was
regarded as a powerful preacher. He
• is survived by his wife and several
brothers and sisters.

Notes.—Miss G. Meag,her, of Dublin,
spent a few days in our burg last
week, the guest of Miss S. Queenan.
—A very nice picnic was held in -Mr.
Owen Hart's bush on the first. A
'number of the parents attended and
greatly enjoyed the afternoon, after
which a fine lunch was served by the
pupils—Aeumber of the young men
spent the first in Stratford.—Mr.
George Malone and Maurice Dalton
renewed old acquaintances in Strath-
roy over the holiday.—Haying has
commenced and although the quantity
is small the quality is very good.
With good. weather it will all be
harve4ed very soon.—Mr. Dan Cronin
is finishing his fine new house by the
addition of a fine verandah.

were in better demand than the steers and
heifers, but their price, which stood at from
312 to 312.50. per cyrt. last week, dropped
to from 310 to 311.65 per- cwt. to -day. Fat
bulk; brought from 310 to 312.25 and bologna
bulls 36 to 38 per cwt.., a drop of 31.50
to $2 in •the lower qualities.
Sheep were a little easier,, with ligrht sheep
around 9c per pound and heavy ones at from
sy, to 7e per pound. There were over 1,500
sheep and lambs on the market, and the
Price for sheep held up well considering the
big run. Spring lambs sold at from 161/4
1736c per. pound. The market for calves was
very weak, 16c per pound ruling as the top
price.
Hogs were strong at last week's price of
$2(0 fed and watered, and a few choice lots
brought as high, as 420.50.
The receipts were 260 cars, with 4,456
cattle, 1,265 calves, 2,567 hogs and 1,539
sheep and Iambs.

Cattle that had accumulated since Wednesday
olokr. owing to the lay-off for Dominion Day

holiday. added to a fairly heavy receipt over
the week end, brought the total offering. this
raornIrg up to well over 5,000 head and
business started very slow. Only 750 rattle
had erc,4sed the scales at noon, and although
sates were more brisk immediately after
lunch, the reduction of at least 15c per cwt.
on good stuff and a dollar on poorer quali-
ties from last week's closing price continued
