that the owner would have been a

man. The cerebellum or back brain
was the first part of man's brain to
be evolved; It takes care of ° the
motor impulses, the muscular - action.
This was the sort of brain that man
needed when he was emerging from
savagery and when hid whole thoughts
were concerned with the search - for
food, for a mate, and in combating
his enemies.
The real grey matter is the cer-
ebrum, which has grown with the
ages forward and backward, in the
higher civilization crowding the cer-
ebellum into a smaller space than it
occupied a hundred thousand years
,ago. To show how little mere weight
has to do with cerebration, it is cal-
culated that the average man thinks
with nine billion brain cells, whose
combined weight is less than one per
cent, of the entire brain. Nor is the
shape of the head an infallible guide,
Theman of intellect, as a baby and in
his earlier years, has probably a
head of normal shape. As he thinks
and uses his higher brain centres,
the interior brain grows and gives the
wide, high forehead which marks the
thinker. On the other hand, wide, high
foreheads- may he inherited without
having brains inside them. The brain
of a baby is smooth, like its skin.
The brain of an adult is covered with
indentations, wrinkles, ,ridges and
lines, each one of them the result of
thought. The deeper are the ridges,
the more 'frequent the convolutions,
the greater the proof of high intel-
lectual quality. Mental toil leaves its
marks as indelibly upon the brain
as physicaltoil does upon th'e hands.
One part of the brain whdse func-
tion has hitherto been rather a mys-
tery, is called the , corpus collosum,
buried deep in the brain above the
ear, and touching both the cerebrum
and the cerebellum: It has recently
been established, so scientists believe
that this collosum is the grand cen-
tral reference room and 'governor of
the whole brain, its chief executive.
Upon how big it is, how complex and
how capable depends the mental
greatness of the owner. The brain
itself is literally a telegraph and tele-
phone exchange, a library ofrefer-
ence, an assembling place of facts and
an interpreter of 'sensations. It is be-
lieved thatsome thottghts are like
direct telephone calls, and are answer-
ed immediately by a single group of
cells. Others, on the centrary, de-
mand co-operation among many
groups in order to be created. What
new light may be cast upon the study
of the human brain when the various

GERMANS RECOVERING
SOUTH AMERICA
German business organization in
South America is rapidly working
back into a position of activity in
every market there, according to
Frederick Todd, who has made first-
hand observations in Buenos Ayres,
Rio de Janeiro and other cities in the
southern continent and Whose re-
port is vouched for by the National
City Bank, of New York, through
publication in its official paper, The
Americas. , Mr. Todd says that the
most convincing demonstration that
the Germag4aconimercial interests
have some sort of cohesive "sys-
tem" in South America was given
right after the, armistice, when the
merchandising situation in prac-
tically all markets there went into
chaos because of the panicky belief
that prices would drop` in the face
of' enormous deliveries from the
United States, Great Britain and the
rest of the world. The Germans de-
liberately helped propagate the
panicky wave of cancellation of or-
ders and refusals to take goods on.
delivery, and then, in all South
American markets, bought in im-
mense quantities of this merchan-
dise ---principally American and
British -auctioned off at low prices.
These goods are now being marketed,
says Mr. Todd, by the German
houses at. a good profit and at prices
far below those asked in the United
States.
Mr. Todd quotes a prominent mer-
chant of Asuncion, Paraguay, . as
saying that the German houses there
had more . English _ and American
goods- than; anybody else, and it was
a mystery how the goods had been
obtained. "In August," says Mr.
Todd, "the German banks in Brazil,
which had been shut downduring
the war. because Brazil was a bel-
ligerent, were permitted to re -open.
They opened their doors at once,
some establishing themselves in
more commodious buildings, which
they had secured during their en-
forced inactivity. - Among Brazilian
mess men there was a distinct
ing of welcome for the Germans.
shipload of German commercial
men arrived at Rio in May. The
ship had come from- `Holland. They
were well-dressed, prosperous -look-
ing men, some with their families.

Were refused and were sold at auc-
tion or .at private sale. The highly
speculative character of merchan-
dising in every line of product in
several South American centres
would make it possible for any
well -organized scheme of foment-
ing panic, and taking advantage of
it, to be carried out much more
readily than in such a, mar et as
London or New York. Some -of the
most experienced and shrewd busi-
ness men of Montevideo and Buenos
Ayres say they have no doubt
that a strong central organization
handled at least the buying side of
a big movement during the panic
after the armistice, and they have
records to show that large amounts
of ' non -accepted goods went into
German hands. It was not long be-
fore the recovery in merchandise mar-
kets set in, The importing houses
found that labor troubles, lack- of
shipping and so on prevented Amen -
can and European producers from
making •any such deliveries as had
been anticipated. Prices rose again.
The goods that figured in the great
overturn of rejected merchandise
right after the armistice 'have been
marketed at profitable figures.
