LIVE STOCK MARKET Union Stock Yards, Toronto, August 12._ From reports current at the yards - and throughout the country to -day, it would ap- pear as if the packer-buyery had at last joined forces with a definite view of pulling down hog price. One buyer sent out word that he was not prepared to accept any ship- rnent over the week end, and another gave instructions to his men at c nlntry points not to load pending further instructions_ . In addi- tion, word was sent out from different quarters that. not more than $23.25 f.o.b. and '$24.;:5 fed and watered would be paid for boas penned on Monday. and 'that Tue-day's rocas-ion would range from 31 upwards, In view of these, reports, cheaper hog_ are likely ext week if the packer -buyer hold to- g then, which is their intention at present. Atiy change in the country such as happened y€tterday, when 3.4.50. and 325 f.o.b. were wild for hogs shipped to Ingersoll and to Hamilton, might mar the effort to cut hog price; Iocaily. It is just Mich competition on the part of representatives of Toronto houses which has defeated all previous effort; tc reduce prices here. Notwithstanding the ze cord prices paid this week at Toronto, which is the dearest market for hogs on the Amer- ican continent, the packers exhibited a need for hogs. To -day they profess to be in a position to stand off the market next week if they cannot' purchase at their own price. Light -supplies during the week gave a better tone to the cattle trade. For anything good there was always an outlet, at prices steady to stronger compared with quotations of the previous .week- Some heavily finished steers sold from $14 to 315 and good •steers up to 312-50,while atloiee.-butchers were easy to market at from $12\.50 to $13.25: There was again a big percentage of common to medium killers which were only cleaned up because of the scarcity of better stuff_ The medium quality cattle held steady with the price of a week ago. but the common sight "scrap" watt a shade easier and will likely take a further drop next week if supplies are heavy. Good cows and bulls were always wanted - on a steady market and there was a fair demand for canners and cutfers. There never was much demand for stockers and feeders and while milkers were of little. account, goof springers met firm price3. The total receipts for the week were 347 carloads, with 4,665 cattle, 891. calves, 6,680 hogs, 3,273 sheep and lambs and 43 horses_ The quotations were: Choice heavy steers 514 to 314.75; good heavy steers 313 to $13.50; ,butchers' cattle choice $12,75 to $13.25 'do. good $11.75' to 312; do. medium $11.25 to 311.50 ; do. common 37.00 to `$8.00 ; ;June choice 310.00 to 310.50; do. medium 510.26 to $10.75; do. rough J $8 t4' 38.25 cows, choice 510 to $10.50; do. good 39.25 to 39.75; do, medium 58,50 to 59; do. common *7.50 to $8; shockers $11.75 to 311.75 ; feeders $11.50 to 512; canners and cutters $4.50 to $6.25; milkers, good to choice, $110 3140; do. common and medium 565 to 575; springers 390 to 5160; light ewes $10 to 311; yearling 316.50 to $13; spring lambs, per cwt. $17 to 319.75; calves,' good to choice $17.50 to 520,50: hogs, fed and watered $24.75; do. weighed off oars $25; do. f.o.b., 323.75.
