Union Mission Meeting.: There was
se fine gathering in the. Methodist
church last ;Thursday evening when
the three congregations met to hear
Dr. Wilford and Rev. J. L. Sten- t.
Both gentlemen were in splendid f
and gave excellent and timely address-
es. .Dr. Wilford on coning to the
platform was greeted with a Chatau-
qua salute and. the National anthem.
He is a young man of noble parts,
who offered his services on behalf of
wounded and sick soldiers, laboring
especially in the X Ray Department.
He served two years at the front and
comes home looking hale and hearty.
He expects to return to China with
his family this autumn. Mr. Stewart's
address was exceedingly interesting.'
He outlined the life of the .Chinese in
simple and attractive way. He is
fiery hopeful of the destiny of the
rlinese nation and feels itis an ex-
alted privilege to have to share in
moulding the future. Appropriate
and well -rendered musical selections
were given from the different church-
es. Mrs. McTaggart rendered a solo
in splendid form., Mrs. Harrington and
Miss Jessie Somers a duet; Mrs: Broeat
arid. Mrs. McElroy a duet, also selec-
tions .by the choir. The chair was
-taken by the pastor, Rev. R. J. Me -

HURON NOTES
—To the strains of the wedding
March, played by Miss Harriett Kerk,
and in the presence of over seventy
• guests, the marriage of Hilda Gunning
of Whalen, to William Ed. Tookey,
was persornied by Rev. Mr. Finlay.
of Centralia. The young couple were
unattended. Thele was a, splendid ar-
ray
one foot square. In passing once a- 4
round the face, therefore, the minute
hand covers a distance of 60 feet, and
in the course of a year nearly 100
miles, Thus since the clock • was
started some 58 years ago, each of
those hands must have covered a dis-
tance close on 5,800 miles.
In the same time the bells within
Inst have given nearly 20000,000
strokes, but no satisfaction has worked
Out how, many ears have hear them.
The hands themselves are copper
tubes, and are attached to solid gun-
metal stalks. Each hand, with the
weights attached to the spindle inside
for balancing .purposes, weighs very
nearly two. hundredweight„
In spite of their great weight and
thein enormous sweep, those hands are
wonderfully regular. The progress of
the clock -is reported twice daily to
the royal obsevatory, at- Greenwich
Iby electricity. The errors are care -
. fully registered, and it is found that
the clock does not vary a second in a
week. r
Big Ben himself is a huge- mass of
metal weighing between fifteen and
six teen tons. His diameter - is nine
fees,, and the metal is 8i inches thick.
The hammer that strikes hire has a
cast iron head that weighs nearly
seven -...hundredweight.
The winding of the clock without
the striking mechanism occupies twen-
ty minutes. The striking mechanism
is wound twice weekly, the operation
taking nearly a day to perform - " The
weights are about lie tons, and the
shaft in which they move up and down
is 174 feet beep`;
The pendulum weighs upwards of
six hundredweight, and measures
fourteen feet, five inches in length.
In striking - the quarter, half-hou
and hour the first stroke, is usuall
within twe seconds of Greenwich mean
time. Big Ben himself begins opera-
tion within one second of true time,
and, to enable hien to de this, the
fourth quarter begins twenty seconds
before the hour.

BIG BEN
Everything about Big Ben—which is
tow striking again after its war -time
rest—is gigantic. The dials of the
clock, seen from. below, appear to be
moderate enough in size, but they are
eceless than 22':1 feet across, and, con -
Sequently, each of them presents a
surface of nearly 400 square feet te
the world. The figures on them are
Awe feet long and the minute spaces

DO YOU. WANT
PINK° CHEEKS?
They Can be Had by Keeping the
Blood Rich, Red and Pure
Every woman—every girl—wants
pink cheeks.. They mean not only
beauty but good health. When. a WO-
aufin's 'blood is scanty or anaemic,. her
color fades, she looks debilitated, is
Short -of breath and her heart palpi-
tates after slight exertion. Sometimes
;this trouble is :acconpenied, by severe
beadaches; or pa,ins in the back 'or
sishis. This condition is entirely due
to weak, watery blood, and can. only
be -cured by maldng the blood rich, red
and pure. For this purpose there is
nothing can equal Dr. Williams' Pink
PM, which act directly upon. the
hlockl, and in this way bring new
health and strength ,to weak, ailing
people. 'Mrs. Anderson, Hearst, Ont.
-says ;—"Before coming to Canada
from Englareit I Wag a sufferer from
anaemia for upwards of a year. I had
been • gradually getting paler
and weaker. I did not real-
ize that was sick, but felt
constantly tired and worn out. I had
no ambition for anything and grew
so white that my brothers used to call
me "snowball.” At this stage my mo -d
ther decitle.d that she would get br.
Williams' Pink Pills, which are a
favorite medicine in England as well
as in Canada. On the day I coremenc-
ed taking them I fainted on getting out
of bed for a few days. I really felt so
weak that I was glad to take her ad-
vice. I looked more like a corpse than
a living person, I remained in bald
for a week, teking the pills regularly,
and then I felt that I WeS able -to get
up, though not able to go about. From
that on, however, I gained strength
daily, and in a little -more than a
month I ewes feeling as well as ever I
did. The eoler retuened,to my cheeks
and lips, and my Mende were all sur-
prised at my rapid recoveu. I took
no medicine but Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills, so that they deserve all the
credit for my restoratien to health.”
