LIVE STOCK 1VIARKETS
Union Stock Yards, Toronto, March 11. -
The features of the live stock trade at West
Toronto this morning were a decidedly slow
and weaker cattle trade and a return to the
higher hog values of last week.. In view of
The fact that the American markets took a
bound upward last week a firmer hog trade
Toronto was anticipated in some quarters
and the action of the packers in forcing a
cut last week took .many drovers with such
aurprise that they lost money. One result
Was a very moderate offering today, the _drov-
ers holding off until they learned the atti-
tude of the buyers. Right from the ring of
the bell thia morning the market firmed and
tree f.o.b. price was raised to $17.50, an ad-
vance of 75e on Thursday's closing quotation.
On the same basis, fed and watered hogs sold
at e18.25 on an active market which closed
firm.
It was different with the cattle trade. The
fact that common thin scraggy cattle were
too largely in evidence in a run of four thous-
and head, and good cattle 'were corresponding
scarce, did not help the trade. Buying for
export which has kept the Toronto market
really alive during recent weeks also was at
a standstill. Two nice baby steers which
soId at 17c and a few odd and small lois of
steers which sold from $14 to $15 about ex-
hausted the best quality on the market- For
these as in the case of butcher steers and
heifers the market was off 25 to 40 cents from
last weekend. Choice butchers sold from $12.25
to $13 and other grades of butchers met with
similar recessions and notwithstanding the
weaker values the trade was always dull. Cows
and bulls also were slow though only from 15
to 25 cents lower.
All small meats were active at from steady
to a shade stronger values in spots. ,
The quotations were: Choice heavy ex-
port steers, $15.50 to $17; do, good, $14 to
$15; choice butcher steers, $12.75 to $18;.
butchers' cattle, choice, $12.25 to 513; do, good
$11 to $11.75; do, common, $9 to $9.50; bulls
choice, $10.50 to 811.25; do. medium, $8.75 to
$9; do. rough, $7.50 to $8: butchers, cows,
choice. $10.50 to $11.50;, do. good, $9.50 to
$10; do, medium, $8.25 to $8.50; do, common,
37.25 to $7.75; stockers, $8 to $10.50; feeders,
$10.50 to $12; canners and cutters, $5.50 to
$7; milkers, good to choice, $90 to $150; do,
dommon and medium, $65 to $75; springers,
$ag to $150; light ewes $10.50 to $12, yearlings
$12 to $13; spring lambs, $16 to $18; calves,
good to choice, $16.50 to $18.50; hogs, fed and
watered, $18.25; da, off cars, $18.50;. do. f.o.b.
