Union Stock Yards, Toronto, 0.-Busi
ns was, so slow this morning that even th
older frequenters of the yards could not recall
a parallel in the history of the West Toronto
market. The offering was away, down in num
bers and also in quality for a Monds,y, and
up to the noon hour there did not seem to be
an opening for any grade of killers except at
a dollen to a dollar and a half uhder last
week's elating prises. 1. fiset, only in a few
instances all `morning did the buyers for the
large firms enqinee after cattle. The few ear-
ly sales showed itelues for all grades much
.reduced. Where at very limited number of
ehoice butchers were concerned a good 50c
cut was recorded, and valises for common to
raediura quality butchers, were pruned to the
extent of a dollar. Up to the noon hour
scarcely a dozen loads of butcher cattle were

noon, with the drovers compelled to make a
still greater sacrifice, the market became more
active. The apirit abroad this morning may
be a forecaat a what will happen until the
great bulk of the half -fed stuff in the coun-
try is disposed of. With the top off the grass
and the prospect of much dry weather ahead,
farmers are seeking to get rid of their poor
grade killers, These at present prices are of
no use to the buyer, who in self-deiense must
Purchase on a lower market, and the feeling
this morning seemed to be that at West To-
ronto stock yards values have begun to slide
down the scale in earnest. Choice butchers
will be least of all affected, but a reduction
in the market price for the common to good
killere v.111 have ita effect in weakening the
present values for best steers and heifers.
Cows and bulls met a slow hmarket in keeping
with the trade for steers and heifers. Sev-
eral loath of cattle were unsold at the close.
Stocekrs and feeders were down 50c front
rest Thursday, but were not in rauch demand.
Grins COW3 also were half a dollar cheaper than
last week, and several loads which cost from
$8.50 to $9 were shipped out. Milkers were
about steady. with the demand weak.
