LIVE STOCK MARKETS '
Montreal, June 25. -The record prices pre-
vailing at the local cattle markets induced
farmers to ship large quantities of cattle to
the market; and tile morning the offerings
at both east and west end markets were ex-
ceedingly heavy. At the West End Cattle
Market offeringe were; 1,100 cattle, 700 sheer),
and lambs, 500 hogs, and 1,550 calves, while
at the Canadian Pacific Stock Yards there
-were 950 cattle. 400 sheep and lanais, 500 hogs,
and 550 calires. The glutting of- the market
with live stock "led to a stagnation of trade,
and prices were very much weaker, declines
of two dollars per 100 pounds not being in-
frequent. Trading was slow, and the market
was pretty dead, traders being cautious and
going very slow in the hope of getting rain
lower prices. Hogs were a better feature
although the decline in that section, which
has continued for several' eeke, was marked,
and choicest selectee were sold` at' $19 per 100
pounds, while some rough stock were as lone
as 318 per 100 rpounds, •

4, Union Stock Yards. Toronto June 25. -The
run of cattde here to -day was about the aver-
age of the last few weeks as regards numbers
and business started quite briskly, with prices
firm with last week' -end for the good quality.
animals. Toward noon, however, the stock
including a big nunaberof second rate cows,
came up for sale, and things slowed me to
such an extent that 25 cents less per cwt. had
to be aocepted for this class of animals. The
few bade of stall-feds offered brought from
315.50 to $16.25, 'the latter price being for
choice marinas.
The number of calves present was only half
that of last Monday. and the comparative
scarcity combined wit& fair quality in the
lot offered kept the price up to from $16.00
to 317.25 at the top though the poorer ones
eold as low as $12.00.
Spring lambs and all sheep were fewer than
at this time last week. but the price was, if
anything, a little 'lower all round. Spring
lembs brought from 20 to 211ac and yearlings
1514 to 17c.
Hoge were a medium rdn of good quality
and held firm at $15.00 fed and watered.

iiiipitary Service
Men 19 and 20 Years of Age.
Harvest Leave.
Leave of Absence on Ground of Extreme Hardship.
Procedure to obtain Leave cf Absence.
Men Nineteen and Twenty Years of 'Age.
It has come to the attention of the Government that there is a widespread
impression that young men of nineteen' years, and those who became twenty
since October`13, 1917, as well iis those who may become nineteen from time to
time and who have been or will be called upon to register under the Military
Service Act, are to be iznmediately called to the colours.
This impression is 'quite incorrect. No date has yet been fixed for calling
upon such men to so report for duty, nor has the questidn been brought before
the Cabinet for decision. In view of the need of labour on the farm, it is most
• unlikely that consideration will be given to the matter until after the harvest= is
over, although of course the Governnient's action must be cleterniined plinaarily •
by the military situation.
There is no further obligation incumnent upon young men of the ages,
above mentfoned who have registered or who do so hereafter, until they receive
notice from the Registrars..
Harvest Leave.
Sonae enquiries have been received as to the possibility of granting harvest
leave to such troops as May be in the country at that time. No definite assur-
ance can be given on this point as advantage must be taken Of ships as they
become zvailable. On the other hand, harvest leave will be given if at all
possible.
Leave of Absence on Grounds of Extreme Hardship.
It is desired that the Regulations respecting leave of absence in eases of hard -
Alp should be widely known and fully understood. Such leave will be granted.
rn two cases:- (a) where extreme hardship arises by reason of the fact that the
man concerned is either the only SOLI capable of earning a livelihood, of a father
killed or disabled on service or presently in service overseas, or in training for
such service, or Under treatment after returning from overseas; or•the only
remaining of two or more brothers capable of earning a livelihood (the other
brother or brothers having been killed or disabled on service, or being presently
in'-gervice overseas, or in training for overseas Or under treatment after his or
their returri from overseas); brothels married before 4th August, 1914, living in
separate establishments and having a child or children not to be, counted,
in determining the fact that the man is the "only" remaining son or brother;
(b) where extreme hardship arises by reason of exceptional circumstances such as
the fact that the man concerned is the sole support of a widowed mother, an
invalid father or other helpless dependents. ,
It is to be notedthat in all these cases the governing factor is not hardship,
loss or suffering to the individual conerned,'but to others, that is, members of
his family or those depending upon him.
Pipcedure to obtain leave of Absence.
A simple systemfor dealing with these eases has been adopted. Forrni of
application have been supplied to every Depot Battalion and an officer of each
battalion has been detailed whose duty it is to give them immediate attention.
-The man concerned should on reporting to his unit state that he desires to apply
for leave of absence on one or more of the grounds mentioned and his application
form will then be filled out and forwarded to Militia Headquarters, Ottawa'. In
the meantime, if the case appears meritorious, the man will be given provisional
leave of absence for thirty days so that he may return home aid continue his
civil occupation while his case is being finally disposed of.
