Montreal, May 1 --There was a scar- city of steers and heifers . to -day, and in consequence the tone of the market for such was stronger, and . prices scored an advance of 25 cents per cwt. since last week, but supplies of other grades of cattle were ample, and val- ues show no change. The demand `was fair, and a moderately active trade was done, with sales of odd lots of choice steers and heifers at $11.75 to $12.25, and good at $11.25 to $11.50 per cwt. The trade in milch cows was slow, and the tone of the market was easier. The feature of the small meat trade was the stronger feeling in the market for calves, and prices advanced 50c per cwt, which was attributed to the continued keen demand for local consumption and for shipment to outside points and` the smaller offerings. The trade in sheep and lambs was quiet, and prices ruled firm, owing to the very limited supply available. In sympathywith the strength in other Canadian markets for live hogs at the latter end of last week, the tone of the local market to- day was stronger and priers were f ally .25c per cwt. higher. The supply was small for which there mend from -,per and _ alit bated .IOW weenmade at $17.25. Sows at $15.25.`.M stags at 8,65 per emit. weighed oe eirs.
