Indies Make Own Dyes,
t:7 are complaining of the shortage
Manufacturers all over the coun-
t.," are complaining of the shortage
a dyes, but Chem, better known as
"Steve," au Indian and a manufac-
turer of British Colirmbia, worries
not. Chem goes calmly on, using the
dyes that his tribesmen, Clayquots,
hiasused for generations.
Be makes his own dyes, and
whether any more are ever imported
from Germany, or whether American
chemists solve the secrets, are alike
matters of eupreme indifference to
him. So long as his klutchman and
his tenas, or In English, his wife and
daughter, retain their strength he
will pose as a manufacturer and turn
out the same mat and basket goods,
having the same bright colors as the
utensils his forefathers used as berry
eontainers and cooking vessels when
the foot of the white man was a:I:f-
eign to these shores.
• AB the specimens of thO\handiwork
of the Indian women shine forth In
gay colors,. and all colors are ob-
tained by the klutehmen, according
to the siraple process knowfi for
thousands of years. The blaelt, and
it is a black that will not fade, Is
obtained by covering the rushes,
grasses, or bark with the black mud
of the swamps, whicb gives a lasting
jet equal to any Imported dye; the
red isobtained from the bark, of the
alder, pink from a weaker solution.
of the same bark, brown comes from
the familiar tanbark of the hemlock,
and yellow Is boiled out of the root
ef the Oregon grape.

Why Canada is a Dominion.
Even a child will talk correctly
about the "Commonwealth" of Awn
tralia, or the Indian ".Emrdre," and
no one would apply .either of those
terms to- Canada. Canadians are ac-
customed to take the expression, of
the "Dominion" of Canada for grant-
ed; but the origin of that somewhat
-unusual terni is known to very few.
When the great scheme of Sir
hn Macdonald was finally realized,
.And the nine provinces grouped
themselves together into ore) great
confederation, a serious difficulty
was presented by the choice of a suit-
able name. For a time almost a
deadlock ensued.
At length one old member of Par-
liament rose from his seat and told
his colleagues that he had. read in
his Bible that very morning the
words: "His dominion shall be
from the one sea to the other." Ac-
eortiegls he suggested that Canada
should. be known as the Dominion, or
Gd's Land. The suggestion seized
lima the hearts and imaginations of
t,hoee present, and it was promptly
*sa: upon.
