SEAFORTFI, FRIDAY, leaf 25, 1913. lin Bit4I systein. - Tho a:aaan of the *Proudfoot charges Is enforced peblicity of contributicei8 to elections'. The whole subjeet desernie anxious and profound' consideration by the Canadian pelple. It. is. the habit of certain interest d to buy ilegislationand the babit of certain poAticians 'to bleed letefeets for campaign funds. Reefers- itunately Mr. Hanna; is net of tide _type of politician. ee . Probabn• there is not a than ein the niegielateire, wheteser following Sir JaMeS Whitney or Mr. Rowell, whohas not compete confidence ia the private . and nubile- honer' 01 the Provincial Seo' e-retannenHenniay have been i Indiscreet. 11e, Is neitber tricky nor corrupt. _rtes. doubtful it eine other man since the Pro-ell:ice was sekablisbed has . done eesvork et greater moral and material vale "eneloreets people. r It It' a- pity, therefore, - that 'lir . Ptoudfoot continuee Ms yindletive pure etlit of the Minister and that the LW -- era press has exalted thts question into the chief issue ill provincial politics. We make no reflection, upon lere Proud- foot's- oWn neotivere He bad full right to demand inquire 'before a committee of the Legislature and to -have • all the facts produced. But that upon- tise evidence Mr .Hanna should be driven from public, life and the - Government . condemned is ridieulous.: : , . It win not improve the situation; to insinuate.: charges against Ur. . Ito ell The leader Of the Liberal party in ne tarior is as hornet •and aa incorrupt- ible as la the Prodischsi Secreniry. So far as we know his relation to . the Sault Corporation Is not to-- his die- credft. He did work et great -value to - the Corporation and - to the Pro tince and if any subscription was paid ebn The compartyd to the -Liberal election fund responalbilittr- should not -rest pit primarily on the Mira leaer. Both Mr i Hanna and Mr. Rowell are devotedetonthe public interest. Both . are, men a high character. -Both-have energy and'itelent. To. blackentheeeere tation of either is to lower. the level of public life and to shave a, mean tYPe, of ingratituae to efficient' ptibi1c servant& 0 The above is fro:tithe Toronto News. It is about asfine a specimen of setae eta/ Pleading as we letee ever read. The News woteel have-therwhele Pro-, teedlug buttered Over .and forgotten. But in'the Interests of the public and la the interests of political :moraine/there are several points which should be kept prominently and continuously before the public untilthey are properly cleaned up. Mr.. Hanna is ,not bY any means 'the steeple innocent the News depicts bine to be. If be Were he would ribt be fit for the position he now occupies. He undoubtedly has Ms, good qualities, . and he has given goo,e1 service to the ; province since he has occupied his , present position, but this Is . all the : greater reason why the truth and the whole -truth should be. made public In connection with this proceeding, and that is just what the News- and its friends are trying to prevent. If Mr: Hanna is the eesence Of moral rectitude they try , tO make the public believe him to be, they are ,not doing him good service by forcibly hiding • the facts. It will not relieve the situ- ation any, either, to accuse the Liberal party of being equally or. even ..more guilty. Two blacks will not mane one white. It !nay be said, also, that nee- er in the history of Canada bats a Prime Minieter, either Dominion or Pro- vincial, been forced to make such a COnfession before Parlament, and the country in behalf of e colleague as ' Sir Janes Whitney made in the Leg- lelature in behalf of Mr. Hanna. Again it is very clieingenious on the part of the News to lug in the name of Mr.. Rowell and the Sault Corporation in justification or in arrenora.tion of Me. Hanna's admitted offence. We do not -know what Me Rowell's relations weli the sped company were. But all know that these relations existed while Mr. Rowell was a private citizen and long before he became officially con- nected with the Liberal party, and if there was anything fra_that connection which was calculated to unfit Mr. Rowell for his present position, or which wenild render Isim underservieg of the confidence of the people of the pros -lets, it would be far more man-, u ly for the News and its:colleagues to follow tee example of Mr.. Prdfoot and lay their complaints before the public and seek to have them Invest-, igated. If they will do this and M. Rowell and his friends follow the ex, ample of Mr. Hanna's political friend -3 and atte:npt to stifle investigations we venture the prediction that Mr. Raw - ell will net long occupy the position he .now does. The very fact that they do not do this is the strongest evi- dence that their hints and inshiaa- tions are baseless and unworthy. Some of. the facts that should be kept before the public until they are properly cleared up are these: It is admitted that Mr. Hanna received , a contribution for party purposestrom a contractor . with hie depattment :sand that that con, tracter had . . idisputted . claims against Mr. Ilanna,a depart- ir.ent, and that - these claims were at- terward4=adjusted,bY w liannals d'wn , . . . r and 'Iv ee eo tad in_ a 'Ai and corner manner.
