Friday evening? Miss Houghton and

Appeal Sustained.—At the Depart-
mental Exarninatione last summer,
Robertson Y. McLean wrote for both
parte ,of a first cla,ss certificate.
He passed the first part successfully
and took the required marks in eacli
subject for the second' part, but was
a few marks behind on the required
total. He appealed from We decision
and received a 'notice from the Ed-
ucatiene Department at Toronto, a
few days ago, informing him that his
appeal bad' been sustained, and grant-
ing him a full first class certifi-
cate. He has, therefore, succeeded in
taking both parts for a, first in one
Year, a somewhat urlusual achieve-
ment, and one alike creditable to
*his own ability and, to the careful
and efficient instruction Cmperted at
the Seaforth Collegiate Institute. Miss
Ella Robb was the only other pupil
of the school, who succeeded itt suc-
cessfully taking both parts for a
first itt one .year. Neither has yet
failed in an examination, which is
a pretty good record.
, Spreading Out.—The large depart-
mental. stores of the cities are coins
mencing to appreciate the advan-
tages of advertising in the local pa-
pers. Several local papers are now
publishing a, large and attractive ad-
vertisement from the T. Eaton Com-
pany, of Toronto. This same ad-
vertisement was offered The Exposit-
or at- a price as high as we receive
from our own merchants for 'the apace
they occupy. Butit was respectfully
declined, because, we felt the pub-
lishing of such an advertisment
would be injurious to our own mer-
chants, and we believe and have al-
ways contended that purchasers dan
do better on the whole by' dealina
with their own local merchants than
they can by sending their money to
build up. the business houses of the
large cities, to the detriment of their
own market towns. We agree heart-
ily, with the following from the Ex-
eter Advocate -when it says: "There
are but few editora -in our province
who have not made a *vigorous and
continued fight against the city mail
order houee. This has been done
In the interest of the home merchant,
and without money and without
price. If the editors of the land had
reeeived regular adv,ertising rates
for all they have said against these
enemies of the country merchanathey

A Municipal Tangle.
According to the Liatowel Banner,
the council of • the township of Elena
have got into a tangle which they
are at a loss how to unravel. A Mort
time ago the Local Option Act, which
was "inforce in the township, was de-
clared •Invalid by the courts. As soon
as notice of this . decision was re-
ceived, the advocates of the by-law
set industriously to work securing
names to a new petition for a vote
oh a new by-law next January. Al-
though the time was short, nearly
100 more names than the required per-
centage were secured. At the request
s
of two memberof the council, one
of whom was Councillor Buchannon,
a special -meeting of the council Was
called to „receive the petition on thS
first day of November. Meantime
Buchannon was served on behalf of
V. Merger, proprietor of the Elma
House, with a notice of disqualifica-
tion on the ground of having illeg-
ally loaned money to the council; and
the councillor attacked resigned his
seat. The petition was presented to
the balance of the council oa the 1st
inst., but further than receiving it,
'no action was taken:. Before the re-
gular Meeting of the council, on

' were served wit hi a notice from 0.3,

and on other grounds. An opinion
was also received from Messrs. Mor-
phy and Carthew that the council had
good grounds to appeal from the de-
cision of the Divisional Court quash-
ing tba• by-law. There are several
questions arising from this situation..
If the .eouncil does appeal, has it the
right to go on with the by-law as
well? Is the pefition properly before

STARVED BY ANAEMIA..

Health Restored by the Rich Blood
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills
Actually Make.
•••••
Thousan.dsand thousands of young
girls throughout Canada are liter--
ally passing trite hopeless decline for
the want of the new rich red blood
so abundantly supplied by Dr. Wil-
liams' Pink Pills.They are distress-
inkly weak, pale or Ballo*, apPetite
fickle, •subject to headaches, dizzi-
ness, are breathless, and, the heart
palpitates violently at the least ex-
ertion. The doctors call this an-
aemia—stitch is the medical name
for bloodlessness. Dr. Williams' Pink
Pills actually make new blood—they
cure anaemia Jest ae surely as food
eures hunger. Here is a bit of the
strongest kindof evidence: "Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills and nothing else
saved my two daughters when doc-
tors had failed to help them." This
statement is made by Mrs. 'Joseph:
Martel, St. Oliver street, Quebec.
She adds: "My daughters e,re aged
respectively twenty-two and twenty-
three years. For two years they
suffered from the weakness and dis-
tress o anaemia,and had I learned
of Dr. :Williams' Pink Pills earlier, it
would not only have saved me
money, but ninth worry and anxiety
as well. Both girls were Ws pale as
a sheet, They suffered from head-.
aches, poor appetite, and grew so
feeble that they could hardly go
about. They were under a doctoes
cart, but didnot improve a bit: I
despaired a ever seeing Thera in
good health again, When a friend
called my attention to Dr. Williams'
Pink Pills, Soon after they began
thes pale there Was an improvement
in their condition, and in less than a
couple of months they were again en-
joying good health, and active robust
girls. I am so grateful for what Dr.
Williams' Pink Pills have done for
