-A French explorer Into discovered on the
west coast of Africa what he regards as the
vainest people on earth. They are the
Pithonins, a war -like tribe, whose male em-
ployment is the adornment of their parsons,
chiefly by moans of_tattooing. Great in-
genuity is also exhibited in dressing their
hair, which in many cases is arranged in as-
tonishingly elaborate fashion,
, -Some journeyman bakers in Deptford,
England, threatened to strike because their
employers made it a custom to hold prayers
on Sunday night, before preparing the dough
for Monday's bread, and refused to pay for
the time thus spent.
-A woman is alive in Vienna who sang in
the chorus at tho first performance of Beet-

executioneers have gone on

for their work, but they say that o less
than fifty cents they will starve.
-John McLeish, a Glasgow commission
merchant, now in Canada, says be conies to
endeavor to induce the people of the Domin-
ion to ship more eggs to him. He bought
$2,500,000 worth last year in this country,
and will take all that he can get. His testi-
mony -that Canadian eggs are the best
quality imported into Great Britain -is
borne out by facts.

hundred and ninety million dollars for poul-
try, the proceeds of one-year, corn ared
with 8186,000,000 for hogs for the same
time, tells with emphasis the enormous mag-
nitude of the poultry business. It be omes
startling when it is remembered tha we
are still importers of eggs, for we s iould
supply every home demand and be a le to
export besides. Britain imports 135,1415,111
dozens of eggs, at a cost of $20,365,326, and
we furnish 447,033 of the amount, or did in
1897."
