JANUARY 15 1897
edraWri to shat out oda and darkness
There all the children of the house were
running out into the snow to meet their
-rnarried sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles,
aunts, and be the first to greet them.
Here, again, were shadows on the window -
blind of guests • aesembling ; and there a
.group of handsome girls, all hooded and
fur -booted, and all chattering at once,
tripped lightly off to some near neighbor's
house • where woe upon the single man who
saw them enter -artful witches, well they
knew it -in a glow.
- But, if you had lydged from the numbers
of people on their way to friendly gather-
ings, you might have thought that 210 sone
was at home to give them 'welcome when
they got there, instead of 'every house ex-
, pecting company, and piling up its fires
half -chimney high. Bleasings on it,. how
the Ghost exulted How it bared its
'breadth of breast, and opened its capacious
palm, and. floated on, outpouring, with a
generous hand, its • might and harmless,
mirth on everything within its reach •
The very lamplighter, who ran on before,
- dotting the dusky street ..with specks of
light, and who was dressed to spend the
evening somewhere, laughed out loudly as
the Spirie passed, though little kenned the
lamplighter that he had any company but
.Christmas
And now, without a word of warning
from the Ghost, they stood upon a bleak
and desert moor, where monstrous masses
of rude stone were east about, as though it
were the burial place of giants • and water
spread itself wheresoever it liste'd, or would
have done so, but for the frost that held it
prisoner ; and nothing grew but moss and
furze'and coarse rank grass. Down in the
west the setting sun had left a streak of
• fiery red, which glared upon the desolation
for an instant like a sullen eye,and frowning
• lower, lower, lower yet, was lost in the
thick gloom of darkest night.
"What place is this ?"-asked Scrooge.
A place where Miners live, who labor
in the bowels of the earth," returned the
Spirit. " But theyknow me. See !"
A light shone from the window of a hut,
and swiftly they . advanced towards it.
Passing through the wall of mud and stone,
they found a cheerful tompany assembled
round a glowing fire. An old, old man and
woman, with their children and their
children's children, end .another generation
beyond that, all decked out gayly in their
holiday attire. The old man, in a voice -
that seldom rose above the howling of the
wind upon the barren waste, was singing
them a Christmas song -it had been a very
-old song when he was a boy -and from time
to time they all. joined in the chorus. So
surely as they raised their voices, the old
man got quite blithe and loud ; and so sure-
ly as they stopped, his vigor sank again.
The Spirit did not tarry here, but bade
Scrooge hold his robe, and passingion above
the moor, aped -whither? Not to sea? To
sea. To Scrooge's horror, looking back, he
saw the last of the land, a frightful range
of roeks, behind them ; and his ears whke
defeaned by the thundering of water, as it
rolled and roared, and raged among the
dreadful caverns it hacl worn, and fiercely
tried. to undermine the earth.
But upon a dismal reef of senken- rooks,
some league or so from shore, on which the
waters chafed and dashed, the wild year
through, there stood a solitary lighthouse.
'Great heap's of sea -weed clung to its base,
and storm -birds -born of the wind one
might suppose, as sea -weed of the water -
rose and fell about it, like the waves they
skimmed.
But even here, two mon who watched the
light had made a fire, that through the
loophole in the thick stone wall shed out a
ray of brightness on the awful sea. Joining
their horny hands over the rough table at
which they sat, they wished each other
Merry Christmas in their can of grog ; and
one of them: the elder,. too, with his face
all damaged and scarred with hard weather,
as the figure -head of an old ship might be:
struck up a sturdy song that was like 'a
Gale in itself.
Again the Ghost sped on, above the black
and heaving sea -on, on -until, being far
away, as he told Scrooge, from any shore;
they lighted on a ship. They stood beside
the helmsman at the wheel, the look -out in
the bow, the officers who had the watch ;
dark, ghostly figures in their several sta-
tions ; but every man among them hummed
a Christmas tune, or had a Christmas
thought, or spoke below his breath to ' his
companion of some by -gone Christmas Day;
with homeward hopes belonging to it. And
every man on board, waking or sleeping,
good or bad, had had a kinder word for an-
other on that day than on any day in the
year ; and had.sharecl to some extent in its
festivitiee ; and had remembered those he
cared for at a distance, and had known that
they delighted to remember him.

"For eighteen months I was a victim of
rheumatism, and ;during the whole of that
time was trying every means to cure it, - I
had the best doetots in Canada, and took
their piescriptions with faith and patience.
" I got tired at lest for I found the dis-

Simon Grubt;'s Dream.,
Reprinted by request from the American
liuriume Education Society.
The text was this •. " Inaamuch as ye
Have done it to these ye have done it to me,"
Soon Simon slept for it was sultry weather,
And the dream and the sermon went on together.
He dreamed that he died and stood at the gate
Of the outer court ?here the aagels wait
For those -who hear the glad "Wall done,"
And can enter the realms of the Holy One.
While Simon waited and wondered if he
Had forgotten the password, or lost the key.
A voice above him said loud and clear,
"DO you know you must bring Tour witnesses here'
" Of witnesses there are many," said he ;
" My brethren and neighbors will all speak for me,"
But the brethren and neighbors came not near;
And he heard only a whinney, familiar and clear;
'
And old Grayfoot, the horse, stoOd Just at his right,
While around on the other aide, Just coming in sight
Was a crowd of dumb creatures, so forlorn and so
P00?
That the angel wept es.he opened the door,
Then Simon grew pale and trembling with fear
Said, "0 why are notsomeof the brethren here?
Pray wait. pray wait, they'll surely come,"
'Twas Grayfoot that spoke there and Simon was
dumb.
"On wintry night* I've stood in my dell,
When the cold winds blew through the creeks in the
wall
Till every Joint and sinew and bone
Seemed frozen and dead as the coldest done.
I'veishivered the dreary time away
With only some wisps of the poorest hey ;
Then pat to work with shout and blow,
So hungry and faint I could scarcely go."
Then old Brindle came, and with roft brown eyes
Fixed on her master in sad eureedse,
Told a pitiful tale of starvation and cold,
And how he had aold her food for gold.
The poor sheep told their story, too,
Of bitter wrongs their *hole life through;
Turned out in cold and stormy weether,
To starve and freeze, and cry together.
They were lowly cries, but they turned to prayer,
And floating upward had rested there
Close by the ear of Him who says,
"1 will hear the cries of my poor alwayl." ;
The old house dog, though treater' ill,
Came near and fawned on his master still,
Because the love these dumb things know
Is more than human, more faithful, more true.
Then conscience woke like some torpid thing,
That is brought to life by the aun in spring,
And it lashed and etung him like poisoned thongs
As nemory brought him his train of wrongs,
Forgetting nothing of word or deed,
Of cruel blows or selfiah goreed.
His cruelly treated friends that were dumb
Would they follow him on through the ages to
come?
Must he see them forever, hungry, gannt and cold?
For "Time and eternity never grew old."
How oft in dumb pleading they asked a caress
From his hands that had beaten and starved them!
Ah, yes,
He remembered it all, and it stung hint to know
That the love they had oraved had been met only
with a blow.
0 could he live over the life that was pad,
And leave out its sine, to stand here at last
With a Bout that was white for a happier tate;
Was it conscience that whispered, Too late, too
late
He'd cruelly paseed over life's narrowing track,
Till remorse claimed ,its own -for, that never turns
back;
And sine scare° remembered, remembered too late,
Grew back as he saw them from heaven's barred
gate.
'Twas in train that he strove to speak, to say
Those sweet old words, " Forgive, I pray ;"
Sin's last sad erv : he was silent there ;
He was dumb, with such woeful need of prayer.
Then voices seemed Heating on every breeze ;
" Ye did it to these Ye did it to these,"
Go hence, be homefese, go starve aud freeze,
"Yo did it to these, Ye did it to these.
"And when you are faint and weary with woe
You Will still hear the shout, you. will still feel the
blow,
While a voice from which you shall never be free
Will whisper beside you, "Ye did it to me."
But,hark 1 What melody over hint rolls?
Do the angels sing requiems over lost 801118 ?
His last hope had fled. In an agony new
He awoke -to find himself safe in his pew.
What his dumb friends thought none es er knew
When food was plenty and blows were few,
But the teacher that follows us ever it emus
Gives his strongest lesson, sometimes in dreams.
Remember, dear Mende that the lips that are dumb
May be those that eel speak when our time shall

TORONTO, Dec. 8, 1896.
MESSRS. T. MILBURN & Co.:
DEAR SIRS, -For over ten months I
suffered. from dropsy, caused by kidney
trouble which followed an attack of la
grippe. The symptoms rapidly became
serious and medical aid was called in.
Among otherS who were consulted were
Dr. Wallace, Dr. Norman Allen Dr.
Weir and Dr. Glass, all of this city, and
I can truly state that they made every
effort that medical skill could provide.
Seven operations W:ere performed within
six montbs, during which time I visited
at different *periods for the purpose of
these operations the following hospitals,
viz: The Toronto- General Hospital, St.
Michael's Hospital and Grace Hospital.
Although all that could be done for me
was faithfully and skillfully performed,
I receined only temporary relief, the
operations only serving to remove the
enormous quantities of water which con-
stantly accumulated. .As a matter of fact,
17 gallons of water were removed during
the last two operations. After the last
operation I was given up to die and was
given only six to twelve days to live.
In addition to the best medical skill
which money could procure, I used all
kinds of patent medicines which pro-
mised relief, but without effect.Al I the
family remedies suggested, such as Milk-
weed. Tea, Pumpkin Seed Tea, Mullein
Leaf Tea Spanish Onion Tea, Sweet
Nitre and Buchu, etc., were faithfully
tried but gave not the slightest relief, so
that I had lost all hope, when I was per-
suaded to try Doan's Kidney Pills, to-
gether with Laxa Liver Pills. To my
surprise I received almost immediate re-
lief. s) At this time. I *as unable to lie
down and for three and a half months
previously was` forced to sleep 'in a chair.
My waist measure was then 49 inches; it
is now 33' inches, since_ the wonderful
cure madeby these pills.
I consider myself perfectly cured and
feel strong and well. My weight, when
I was attacked was 198 pounds. After
the operations I was reduced to 130. I
weigh now 160. By carefully watching
the action of Doan's Pills and Laxa
Liver' Pills I am positive that to them
alone is due the wonderful cure which
has taken place in my case. -
I am a printer by trade and have held
positions in the offices of The -Globe, Mail,
Methodist Book Room, etc., as well as
in 'Ohio and Detroit, ma., and have
been an employing printer since 1877.
Alttough it may seem incredible,
every word I have stated. lathe truth, and
I am prepared to back it by the evidence
of hundreds of citizens and friends who
knew me before I was sick and afterwards,
while I was near death's door, and who
now, to their surprise, see me restored to
'complete health by the use of Doan's Sid-
ney Pills, assisted by Laza Liver Pills,
I shall be glad to answer inquiries from
sufferers from kidney or liver troubles at
any time and refer to the following _gen-
tlemen who have knowledge of the facts,
and can verify every word' I say. Many
of these gentlemen knew me before my
sickness, during my terrible sufferings,
and since I was restored to health. My
testimony is given voluntarily and with-
out any consideration of any kind, either
directly or indirectly. I give it solely
for the benefit of my fellow beings who
may be afflicted with Dropsy or Kidney
troubles of any kind, viz.
