A party of tourists formed part of 4 large
company gathered on the deck of n ex-
cursion steamer that was moving lowly
down the Mississippi one beautiful es ening
in the summer of 1882. A gentleman who
has since gained a national reputation as an
evangelist of song had been delighting the
party with the happy rendering oflmany
familiar hymns, the last being the sweet
petition so dear to every Christian heart,
beginning, "Jesus, Lover of My Soul."
The singer gave the rst two verses with
much feeling, and a eculiar emphasis upon
the concluding lin4s that thrilled every
heart. A hush had alien upon the listeners
that was not broken or some seconds after
the musical notes h d died away. Then a
gentleman made his vay from the outskirts
of the crowd to the 4ide of the singer and
accosted him with, 'Beg your pardon,
stranger, but were 7 u actively engaged in
the late war ?" eS, sir," the man of song
answered, "1 foug e under general Mc-

you were on guard duty. We of the South
had sharp basiness on hand, and you were
one of the enemy. I crept near your post
of duty, my murderous weapon in my
hand ; the shadows hid me. As you paced
back and f=orth you were- humming the
hymn you have just sung. I raised my
gun and aimed at your heart, as I had
been selected by our commander, General
Johnston, for t,he work because I was a sure
shot. Then out upon the night rang the
words: i
'Cover; Til videfencelees head

"Your prayer 1 s answered ; I could not

made uponott camp that night. You
are the man ho e life I was spared from

The Wit oi Dialect.
The simplest incident, said Eli Perkins
before the American Associatien for the
Advancement of Science at ColuMbia Col-

a dialect is always very fenny. Dialect '
either Melt, Scotch, Dutch, or Negro
doubles the interest in an anecdote. The

simplest family questiona like thig :
"An phwat does yiour Janile and Patsie

"An' it's direchters they are Foine
gentlemen, -sure 1 An' phwat does they
direcht? "
:
"Shure and Pateie direcs eirculairen,
lend Jamie wears a swally-tail coat an&
directs the people to their sates." 1
One clay I a.sked 'Patrick why he didn't
know better tban have his pig pen 'So close
to his house.
"An' phwy shuld ei net sor ?"
"Why, its unhealthy; " I said. i
"It's unhealthyyea. say ? 0 be away wid

I was subject to frequent attacks of
nervousness that seemed to sap all my
