A. Little Plain Truth.
"If & woman helps herself she may,"
-seys an experienced matron. Was there
ever a more trueworcl uttered ?Ng. The wise
adage says: "God helps those who help
themselves," but men don't. A woman
who goes about holding her hands like
squirrels' paws to keep them white, who
shrieks at the appesrance of a mouse in the
corner, and is afraid of her shadow, will be
waited on by all her male relseives, who
will think her reticule or weed teo much
for her to carry. But if you refrain from
being baby enough, to ask for help where
the burden is potsible, you may carry your
own Saratoga trunk down stairs without
any man of them all offering to "catch hold
of the other end."
Be willing to run out alone in the twilight
and you may escort yourself at midnight.
"It is only you, and you're not afraid."
Because youdon't shriek if a ridiculous

are sapposed to have no dread of a drunken
tramp or a midnight burglsr. Be brave and
sensible, and glad to help others, and—
well, you wont get " toted"—No! good old
Southern word, how expressive it is '—you
won't get toted about by any man related to
you. You are supposed to be imperious to
rain, incapable of fatigue, and to need noth-
ing in the way of comfort.
There are families where one sieter, who

need diamonds and real Iace ; while not one
of thcm has the least idca that the other
sister wants even shoes and poaket hand-
kerchiefs, because she has forborne to cry
for them when the family exchequer has
been low. Poor policy that. I advise all
women to curl up their hands and bemoan
themselves if they want nice dry goods, and
consideration, aud escort duty from their
own family.
I have preached to women to be helpful
and aelf-reliant, I know. I won't take it
back. Bat remember that "a woman who
helphersdf may." All the men, from
your grandfather to your grandson, your
sponae included, will soon teach you that.

Hints for the Kitchen.
A sack of the best salt standing where
there is a smell of fiah or any objectionable
odor will absorb the flavor.
Water that has been allowed to boil and
then become cool is better than vinegar to
mix with muetard for the table.
When you polish your stove, shave as
much hard olip as you use of the polish,
boil them .together in a little water, and
apply.
By rubbing with a piece of flannel dipped
in whiting, the brown discolorations may be
taken off- of cups which have been used for
baking.
After the juice is equeezed from lemons,
the peels are useful to rab broke with ;
dip in common, salt, then brush with dry
bath -brick.
In taking down a stove, if any aoot should
fall upon the carpet or rug, cover gaickly
with dry salt before sweeping and not a
mark will be left. •
Wash zinc in a strong eolution of warm
water and washing sada, or ammonia a.nd
soap; afterwards rub thoroughly with a
woollen cloth saturated in coal oil.
A grocer has given the following method
as an effectual one for preventing eheese
from moulding ; dip a cloth in cider ,vine-
gar, wring, and in it wrap the cheese.
To set delicate colors M embroidered
handkerehiefs, soak them ten minutes, be-
fore washing, in a pail of water in which a
desert spoonful of turpentine has been
stirred.
Teapots should be washed thoroughly
with strong soda and water and then rinsed
well and perfecitly dried each day if one
would prevent the curious haylike smell
often noticed in a teapot.
In bottling catsup or picitles, boil the
corks, and while hot you can press them in-
to bottiee, and when cold they are tightly
sealed. Use the tin foil from comeressed
yeast to cover the corks.
Coal oil will take iron rust and fruit stains
from almost every kind of goods without
injuring the fabric. Wash the spoiled spot
in coal oil as you would in water. The
vote must be washed in coal oil before they
have been pat into soap and water, or it will
done good.
Take an ordinary baking -powder box with
a tightly fitting lid, and, with a good-sized
punbh a few holes in the lid and also
in the bottom. Into this box" put all the
small bits of soap which are otherwise apt
to be thrown away. Throw this into the
dish wider when you begin to wash dishee,
and by giving it a shake now and again You
have a nice lather for the dishes. Aftet a
trial, of this sosp-shaker, you will not be
satisfied to do without it.

How to 'Strengthen the Throat.
Sudden change of weather, as froiri heat
to cold, or the reverse, are respobsible for
many an illness, and espechtily for throat and
Sir 'Dibrell Mackelizie, who was le special-
ist in throat troubles, always insisted that a
great many of the ailments tliat were
brought under his notice could havei been
escaped but for the injudicious cddalifig of
the throat. The throat most not, be Wrap-
ped up too much ; the great thing ile to pry to
harden it. By care and persistence the, neck
can be made as water proof as the face.
Many people who are not in the Elperei are
amazed that the patriarchal Geladetonis can
stand for hours with head uncovered in the
open air while a strong breeze is blowing.
The ability to do this with imphnite was
gained by sitting habitually at a wihdow
through which a draught was ()hated, so
that the head become accustomed to all va-
riations of temperature and all degrqes of
air motion. In the same way the throat
can become habituated to varying eenditions.
It should be kept free from wrappings. Woe
men should dispenie with their great Nether
boas and Medici collars, and men should
cast aside their stifling mufflers. It is an
excellent practice to wear turn down vinare,
and gargling with cold salt water ' In the
morning has sovereign virtue, as well as
bathing the throat first with very -hot Water
and then with very cold. The throat thus
gets the effect of a sudden shock, and is

Timely Wisdom.
•Before taking up plants from the becls, cut
Great and timely wisdom is shown by keeping Dr.
about them with a spade. Do this in such al Fowler's Extract of Wild Strawberry on hand. It
manner as to leave a bell of earth, with roots has e ual for cholera., cholera morbus, diarrhoea,
intact, about as large as the pot in which you
-think it advisable to put the plant. This
will cut off the old roott which have extend-
ed so far on all sides that they have out-
grown the limits of an ordinary pot, and in-
duce new mote to start inside the ball of
earth. In this way you have anew growth
begun before the plant is lifted and it wilt
he easy to pot it without much distUrbance
of the soil, consequeetly it will rapidly be-
come established in its new quarters, and by
the time it is necesittry to take it into the
house it will be growing. If you do not, de
this before re -potting, there will be so great
disturbarice of the rots that the plant wilt
be seriously affected, and it is because of
this that I always advise those having plant!'
that are to be carried through another win-
ter in the house to keep them growing io

Paoifie Coast Shingle Trad. e.
The Puget Sound Lumberman in it. our -
rent issue, under the heading of "Growth
of the Shingle Trade," gives a list of fifty-
-'six new shingle mills established in e'Vest-
ern Washington during the post six months.
With British Columbia and Oregon to hear
from, it, is safe to say that over 100 new
mills hive been erected in the Pacific North-
west since Jenuiery lat. The daily capacity
ha.s been increased 5,860,000 by the building
of these mills. With the estimate of the
cut of shingles last year at 900,000,0000 the
increase of the capacity this year will bring
the cut up to 2,800,000,000, an increase of
200 per cent. Machinery and other equip-
ment for the new mills cost in the neighbor-
hood of $260,000.
In explaining the cause for this increased
demand for shingles, the Lumberman says
it arises from the popularity of red bedar
shingles at the eaet, and that this popularity
is due to the efforts of the North Pacifio
Consolidated Company. The Cousolidated
Company spent much money in advertising.
First, circulars were sent to every dealer in
the United States; then testimonials were
mailed; then salesmen were sent out, and,
lastly, cars were sent to country yards with
orders to keep until mold.' It was a rather
risky experiment, because the white pine
men did not fancy invasion into their ter-
- ritory, and then the deep rooted-oustom of
buying pine shingles had to be overcome. It
was a long time before returns came in. It
