It sots qniekT, affording almost instant , relief fr m the severest pain. — • reF 6 en* e „ THE HURON EXPOSIT° • To Young Women. "Marry a man who has the spirit o self-denial. This reveals manliness Self-denial, alao, is the fountain of do mestic joy. The most of what we thin is love, is an unconscious selfishness The test of love's trueness is self-denial Not what gives us pleasure, but wha we are willing to deny ourselves to giv another pleasure. A young man ma cheerfully go with you here or there be cause of the pleasure of your society He may generously spend his money i expensive gifts for you, from a selfis enjoyment to himself. This does no prove his affection. The test is, Ho much is he willing to give up of what h enjoys to please you? How much sacri fice will he make for your pleasure? 11 asks you to give up your name for hi name. To leave your home for hi home, to go with him wherever his in terests may call. He asks you to be hi -to give your life to his joy and help fulness. Now, how much will he give up to please yoa ? That's the ques tion. "Let me illustra.te. Suppose he formed the fashionable wine habit, using wine not to excess, but only a little now and then for the pleasure when in certain circles or with a few comrades. Here's an easy test. He knows that you would rather he would not do it; that it would please you if he would give it up. Oh,' he says, there's no harm in it. I shall never drink to ex- cess. The boys would laugh at me and it would not be polite to refuse in cer- taha circles. It's a little thing.' No matter ! That's not the question. If it's a little thing, then the less excuse for refusing to grant it. Will he deny himself that little habit to please you? But he laughs at your request and says, Oh, don't be foolish. You don't want me to give up my liberty.' That's not the question. Will he give up a useless habit to please one whom he pretends to love more than he loves all others? There on the left a glass of wine; and there on the right you stand. Now, if he loves you as he professes and is an unselfish man, he will reply, Though I see no great harm in it, yet, if it will please you, and cause you to be happy never touch it again.' The young man who will not do that is selfish, and loves his appetite more than- he loves you. The man who will not give up his wine cup to please the woman he asks to give up her home for him is not fit to be the husband of any woman. "But more. This is also the test of your future safety, because the position he takes now reveals the spirit he will manifest after marriage. Yea, more, - it is not Safe for any young woman to marry any young man who has formed in the least degree the drink habit. No man can tell where it will lead him. If you cannot reform him while the habit is small before marriage you cannot after marriage. If he will not give it up to win you, he will not when he is sure of you. You have an hundred times more power over him now than you will after marriage. There is peril here ! His word that he will not increase the habit is worthless. The only safety is in absolute freedom. As affectionate young women as you have trusted as strong young men as he, promis ng that they would never increase th habit, and they have died broken- earted. No young man knows how wea he is. A young woman has aright to demand some things when she gives h r name and her life to a young man. I et him know that you and the wine cu do not go together. If he does not llike the terms, let him depart, and do ndt thank Cud that you are free from im ; for nineteen thnes out of twenty a man who will not give up the drink abit to please the woman whose hand e seeks, seeks her for only selfish reas ns and would make a drunken husba d. Let me reverse the case. Suppose t hen he called to see you, he should noti -e that once in a while you take a 1ittli some- thing and put in your mouth, and aftef. Hecing you repeat it a few time, he quires what it is. Oh, nothi g,' yqu say. But at the next call he s es ychi do the same thing and he says, What is that little seed?' Oh, nothing,' you say, only a little opium. That's all !' How many times woule a re- spectable young man visit a you g wo- man who was forming the opium habit? No sensible man would marry ao opium eater ! But the one is no wor e than the other. No sensible young woman will marry a young man who is terming the drink habit. There is to much peril, woe and death in it, A Rich Hod Carrier. The story of John McDevitt, of Pas- saic, New Jersey, seems to .pro e that money goes where it is sent, ini face of the most adverse circumstances. , John was a hod crrier, who never Ileceived over $1.50 a day in his life, nd the ! first part of his rnanhood was s ent in working for twenty-five cents a ay and his board. Yet a little while go the grip carried him off untimely at the age of tifty-seven years, and he left behind him property worth $50,000. Every- thing seemed against him. H could not read nor write. Soon after he was teerage g with live on onegal grown he came to America by passage in a sailing vessel, havi him only a bag of potatoes to during the voyage. He was a boy. It required twl? years for him to save money enough -to send to his young wife to bring her over here too. Both work- ed as bard as they could and saved all the money they could. She did • the house work and her husband the agri- cultural labor on a gentlenian's place for awhile, Then John began hod carrying, an occupation he never left off till two years ago, when at tile age of fifty-five he fell from a ladder -one day and seriously injured himself. They saved all the money they could, yet after twenty-five years of married life, toiling and denying themselves, they had only $600. Then came the curious turn of fortune that made them 1 well to do in a few years. They in- vested the $600 in a corner lot in Pas- , Bale. The deal was one of those so sel- dom made that just "happened to hit." McDevitt mortgaged ehe property and built a house on it. It was shortly after the war, when prices were still high. The Donegal Irishman mortgaged 1 e first house, and built others! The st one was a two-storey frarne, the 2 t one was a large brick structure. s couple had three children. These worked in the Passaic factories, and what they earned was added to the fam- ily store. McDevitt finally had three houses. The lower floors 'were let tsr imeiness men, and the upper ones to re- Jiable lodgers. Then, just when he had _ every ing the way he wanted it, had $5o,Oq paying him good interest, and was re dy to begin to live, along came the gri and snatched him mercilessly away f om it all. He never had even tha sa isfaction of going back to the Old qounvry by cabin passage in a steamship. -.- Short and Sour. an you cook ?" he asked. es,P she replied. an you sew ?" an you wash and iron ?"
