The Huron Expositor, 1891-05-29, Page 66 - TH8 URON EXPOSITOR. MAY 29, 1891. She Put Live Coals Under the Captrnsa Bunk, Cried Fire, and Eloped. Fourteen -year -old -Sadie McClave, the pretty and spirited daughter of James ii McClave a Morris Canal boatman, adopted -novel method the other morn- ing to !excepts the vigilance of her father and flee with the man of her _choice. James Morsel, a man of 35, was em- ployed on a cabal boat unloading coal at the Orange street bridge in Roseville and directly adjoining the Sadie, owned by *Cate, and named after hie daugh- ter. McClave did not like the idea of having his daughter marry at her age, and whei Moran began to pay marked attention to th girl he was unceremon- iously informed to drop anchor in an- other port. Notwitbstan quently, nd fi the part if Mc child aweet hes ing every precaution on ave the lovers met fre- ally Moran induced his t to elope with him. A plan of action as arranged that was worthy of a &roe -comedy. The girl slept in t e cab n with her father, a curtain se arati gtheir bunks. Above t as Sadie's re ting place wa small win- dow, and hen she climbed into the bunk on F iday iight without removing her raim t, dne end of a string was fastened o he little finger and the other end ung ut of the window. Soon after twel e o'cl ck a sharp pull on the cord aro ed t e young child. In a moment she c mprehended that her lover was en the outside awaiting her ap- pearance. 1 Steathity ente ing the kitchen, she drew a shavelful of live coals from the stove and placed them under her father's bunk. A piercing shriek aroused Cap- tain McClave, and his daughter hurried- ly informed him that the boat was on fire. He elprang out of tbe bunk and breaking open thli cabin door, that ha4 been locked, and shouted for help. A dozen canalers responded, and just in time, for the coverings of the bed had taken fire. Within ten minutes the fire was out, and after the exci ement had subeided McClave thought of his daughter whom he had suddenly missed. A thorough search for her on he docks and in the neighboring canal, boats proved unavail- ing. Returning to his own boat the Captain found a note which his daughter - had left notifying him that she had gone with "Jimmie." Captaih McClave said last night that his only regret wits that he would now have to pay some ne else to do the work that Sadie had beei doing for him.—New York World. To Mend a Triangular Tear. A three -cornered tear is the hardest kind of a tear to 1arn neatly ; it is so hard to make it 1i4 nicely when finished. But you can, with care, succeed very well indeed if yoi begin such at the point and darn to ards the ends. Dam- pen slightly on th wrong side (if it is dress material) ad press with a hot iron, being careful to lay a thin cloth over the darn, so that the heat from the iron will not discolor the goods. In this way the tear will carcely be noticed at all. Manners for Boys. Keep step with anyone you walk with. Never play with knife, fork or spoon. Always khock at any private room door.
