eind at the close of school the teacher
hand pupils were unable to leave the

their fuel was used up, and they were
'becoming afraid they would freeze to

lull in the storm, the teacher deter-

Taking the two youngest children by

journey. Hardly had they left the
school building when the storm again
increased, and in a shorttime they had
lost their !way. After wandering about
until all (4 the party had become ex-

lay down together. During the night

TheVery Rev. Thomas daiikson, pre-

'Borneo, la in X8V7 York to solicit aid in
extending a d carrying on the Catholie
-missions in erne°, says the New York
Sun. Fath r Jackson was 'sent to Bor-
ten years ago by Pope Leo XIII.
No two of the tribes on the island spoke
the same Ian nage. They had no set-
tledt
village, ut wandered about from
.place to plec in the wilderness. They
were eontinully at war with each other.
Father Jackson and fourteen assistants
have carried lon the work of civilizing
and Cbrietiaiiizing thee tribes.
Father JA ICSOII said yesterday that
the work ha4 been wonderfully success -
'h ldren, he said, were • intelli-
dui among tit children of the wild peo-
ple. The o
eeent, and when once interested became
apt pupils. They were taught to write
their own languages, using the English
alphabet. They have no alphabet of
their own, and, of couree, no books,
The priests who have sticceeded in mast-
ering the language write books, and
from these the children learn. They
are taught, besides, to till the land.
When the rieett wept to the island
the people h d a habit of collecting the
heads of theit enemies. The women all
(demanded w rrior husbands, and the
ability of a wtarrior was judged by the
innuaber of elide he , had gathered.
When a man proposed marriage to a
'woman she invariably asked, "How
:many heads have you ?" If he did not
have enough to suit her she would tell
him to go and not to return until he had
half a dozen or a dozen more. The
•priests have made a little headway to-
wards discouragiag this custom, but it
de still a oust m.
;
Eight echo le and cherches have been
letablished op the island, and 160 child-
-Ten live in them. Father 'Jackson says
that in ten y ars more than 700 native
converts hay, been made. Nine Catho-
lic sisters are at work among the wo-
men, and more are to be sent out from
England. A peculiarity of these say-
agee is theirmorality. A man may
have only one, wife, and immorality in

ed with death.
A Serx4on in a Sentence.
"We pay hat man six dollars a
:said the pro netor of a small shop re.
,cently to us, "for the reason that he is
the best man on that kind of work, and
we think our elves very fortunate to get
him." Whe we heard this we could
not but wish that. some, who think the
world is too full, and there is no demand
for skilled is or any more, could have
heard it also There never was a time,
there never ill be a time, until the end
of all tuings s at hand,' when skirled
labor will no be in demand. There is
always an ov rplue of nediocrity, and
half-hearted men who work for six
o'clock have nly them elves to blame
when they ar unable to keep jobs. Not
many month since * were talking
with a very hatelligent man who was
posted, so to ifitpeak, on a 1 things outside
of his business. He wa a, mochinist,
and when we broaehed 13 me topics con-
neeted with his trade he shut up like a
steel trap; that was thel one thing he
took no interest in, an it is almost
needless to say he had n poeition in it;
he was a gen ral utility an, fit only to
hew wood a d draw water, and it is fair
to preaume, lo lax was he in all matters
incident to his business, that he spilled
most of the Water and made more chips
than firewood. This Man, when asked,
l
if he took e trade paper, said promptly
that he did not. , •‘ Whyshould 1? if I
was the bestevorkman in the world the
boss would dilly get the benefit of it; I
would not geLt any more." Argument
with a man like that is impossible, and
we said not ing ; but it s a curious fact
that the siiperintende t of this very
works said, as we were g ing over it, "I
want a ma,n for foremen f one of these
shops; and would you b lieve it, there
Le not one out of the who e 600 that I
would trustI never ea such a lot of
men in my life; they do 't care for any-
thing."
Now, the caption of thie article and
the commencement explains - the situa-
tion as regards advancement in life for
those who wish to ion. It is for
young men that we write, not for those
who have run their race. If you expect
more than a bare livitig—and an uncer-
tain one at that --you must be able to
do some one thing better than the it Efiefl
can do it. No matterlif it is only chop-
ping wood—whatever it is, do that one
thing better than nine l out of ten can,
and you will be in aonstant demand.
All men can not be foremen, that is cer-
tain; but to be a foreman implies that
you can do something•Islee betterstill if
you will cultivate the arne qualities.
One of the most diffi ult things is to
convince young men t at they are not
known for what they a e; that they can
be good workmen and ad workmen and
the world will net ta ie cognizance of
either fact. Assuredly it will; every
man is known to his i mediate associ-
ates for exactly what h is. He is under
their notice, all the whi e, and they do
notfail to see his daily walk and car-
riage; this being the fa t, it is easy to
get a good or bad r putation. If a
young man has his way to make let hint
cultivate all things that are lovely and
of good report. Be a-siduous at bis
trade, do the best he can, and take
counsel of his superiors If he skews
that he is in earnest, ev ryone will lend
him a hand.

SPECIAL NOTICE
—TO THE—
Tz.TTPIJIO_
Charlesworth & Brownell, Sea -
forth, is headquarters for Tea.
Wq are importers and profit
sharers. We have the choicest
India and Ceylon brands, the finest
and most delicious Tea the world
can produce.: Also a large stock of
Hysons, Blacks and Japan Teas.
Look and see if you can find any-
thing to match our cup quality at
the prces we offer you. We ask
your personal inspection. We stand
as squarely by our qualities as by.
our prices. Why shouldn't we.
We can well be frank,we can well
be fair with such goods and such
prices. i Why `? Because we im-
Oft in large lines, buy and sell
tons eVery few weeks. Parties buy-
ing in 20, lb. lots we will sell at
wholesale prices. A word to the
farmer a who are buying Tea from
certaini tea companies outside of
their own county. We will guar-
antee to sell equally as good—we
think better—a may pickings Japan
Tea al from five . to ten cents a
pOund j:less, according to quality,
and take your butter, eggs and pro-
duce in payment. By doing this
you save money, leave your money
in "your own county where it will
do youl the most good, and support
your iown merchants instead of
sending the wealth, of thecounty
to assist to build up outside sec-
tions. Remember, we warrant the
Tea, and it can be returned if not
fully better in cup quality at from
five to ten cents per pound less.
Pleasedo not fOrget this. One
trial will convince you, this is no
blow. We do but very little ad-
vertising, . as the public knows.
This i the first printer's ink we
have used for over two years. Our
businellis does not, nor never has,
requir d any booming—it has been
gradually increasinz and becoming
more slid every day, for whidh we
nkful. Farmers and others
reth
will pease call and secure their
Tea, and in every case the Tea can
be returned if not more than satis-
factory.
We'keep a full stock of General
Groceties
Yours Respectfully,
