It is mainly through the sad teachinge of painful experience that knowledge and skill in nursing the sick are gained. 3%nt bite from the experience of others, and timely hints and suggestions, may serve to make a good nurse of the sym- pathetic caretaker. A patient trusts instinctively to the furm, sure touch of the hand that guides and the arm that sustains her. The nurse who is uncertain and hesitating, who falters and fears to act when the occasion requires promptitude, fails to establish that confidenee which is so teedful between nurse and patient. There if usually a childlike dread of falling when being lifted or when the position is changed, and it is here -that the clasp which is strong without the pOssibility of hurting, and gentle while yeassuring, is gratefully appreciated. In the same sense the foot steps may be moderated. The light step may give warning of approach and give a more agreeable impression than the stealthy tread, or that which might be construed as such by a querulous invalid. If ,slight noises seem to cause annoyance,' the sound of the foot steps can be hush- ed by laying mats along the approach to the bed, so that doctor and nurse can "come and go on tufted roses." No clock or watch Should be allowed to tick its inceesent warning into the weary brain of the helpless invalid. In sickness little things become of the greetest importance, and slight annoy- ances cause grievous harm; therefore every complaint should be heeded and a remedy found, if at all possible. If soft coal is burned in the sick room the, fire can be renewed noiselessly by filling paper bags with lumps and plac- ing one on the coals. The paper quick- ly bums sway and the lumps subside in good position for burning. It might be made the duty of a child, or any one not engaged in caring for the patient, to make these nsefulpackages of fuel ready daily. But little outside work should be done by the nurse. To refresh a patient in the morning, when not strong enough for a bath, dip a linen towel in hot water and wring it out, allowing the patient to pass it over her face and hands at pleasure. A few ei tops of SHIMODiS in the water is a re- freening addition to the hath in any case. A Sponge bath can be given safely un- der the blankets, and in cases of fever, repeated many times a day will reduce -the temperature and cause great relief. Do not talk in whispers to one another in the sick room, and as little as possible in low tones. It gives a patient the impression that she is the subject of the conversation, and that her condition is mere serious than she has been given to think. The best of friends frequently err in staying too long -and talking too much. At the first indication of brightness and interest in the sick one, the caller flat- ters herself that she is "cheering her up," and chats on gaily, ignoring the rising flush on the1 cheek of the victim. 1 mean the patient. Too often have much ill-timed visits resulted in danger- ous relapses. No ono should hesitate a •inement in giving the signal to withdraw awl to politely dismiss the caller. It is far better to riek offending an inconsid- erete person, for the time being, than to jeopardize the recovery of an invalid. No news- or gossip of an exciting or painful nature should be retailed in the aiek room, Any subject that may harass ter annoy, or require strained attention should be avoided. 1he ordinary de- tails of home life are absorbing enough ' in their way, for in sickness it is sur- prising how the world of interest nar- rows down until it is all contained within the four walls of that one room. When but little fc•od is taken at one time, a slight refreshment should be given oftener, although it may not be dignified with the name of a meal, It rev be only a cup of tea and a cracker, (yr a little broth or gruel. But if it is fresh and rightly heated, and daintily diehed and served, it is doing all the good of an elaborate meal. A plate, warmed and covered with a napkin, xnekes a good tray for holding a cup and saucer or tiny bowl in bed. fretful and low spiri ence between him s who knows only fro any digestive tipper tus. In softening of thie 'brain one of the first indications of4omething wrong is e increasing irritabili y, which, however, is seldom referred to the true cause. The period of convalescence is often a test in nursing. The delicate b daaces are not yet fully adjusted, and many things grate upon the half morbid fancy. Tact and sympathy are never more necessary, and unfailing patience should be exercised. The daily life of a convalescent might and should be made delightful. Thankfulness for the life that has perhaps nearly touched the harder line of the great change that comes sometime to all, should cause the tenderest sympathy, expressed in recta of kindness. When recovery is fully established, the faithful nurse should be given a holiday made as en- -tit:Mg and pleasant as means will allow. —Atnee E. TREAT. Why We Are Cross. Some -people are calm, and not easily disturbed. Others are quick to feel and strhng in the expression of their feelings. The difference is constitutional. But e-scry,one. says a current authority, whazever his natural temperament, is liable to become irritable SS a result of phyeical disturbance. Marked irrita- bility is often the first symptom of un- due brain work. A man who may have been remarkable for his self control, is surprised to find himself distuthed by trifles. Annoyances euch as he once berdly noticed now fairly unnerve him. He is impatient, and expresses himself in tones, if not in words, of which he is soon ashamed. Overwork of the brain is not confined to professional men. Merchants, the uneertainties of whose business often involve the keenest anxiety are at lest equally liable to it, and in this case the trouble is -often aggravated by a luxhri- oateess of social and personal habits. Nor are a &yes and mothers free from the same danger. Women's work is never done. For her, care seldom ceases while she is awake, and, too often it pursues her even in her sleep. Fashion atel social life sometimes make large de- mands upon her, while the petty annoy- ances ef home fall to her lot almost ex- ciasively. At length unwonted im- patience, fretfulness, and severity With Ler children give warning of nervous prostration, and her husband may per- haps precipitate the crisis by his unjust reproaches. Irritability may have its source in the stomach.
