Not a draught was allowed to blow on her, and five different young gentlemen nearly fought for the privi- lege of seeing her home. Some days passed in this delightful manner, and then Jenny had a new visi- tor. Before being a dressMaker Jenny had been a nursemaid, and one of the bairns she had looked after wee a tricky boy named Willie Crighton, who had nearly worn the life out of her with his mad pranks. The boy was now 22, but as full of mischief as ever; He called Jenny his old maid, and never missed a chance of deriding her plain face, and tormenting her generally. As for mak- ing love to her he had no more idea of that than of making love to the man in the moon ; he could not afford, indeed, to make love to any one, for he was only a bank clerk with £40 a year. This curly beaded young rascal ap- peared at Jenny's home about the end of the week. Jenny was always glad to see him, even though he did borrow raoney from her occastioually, for his nature was so clear and open that she road his every thought as, from an open book. She thought he had come to con- gratulate her like the rest, but he didn't. Hie eyes were toof all of sparkle and mischief, and his opening remark about her ugliness came to her as a re- freshing chenge from what she had lis- telned to for a week. '" I suppose, Jen, they're all -running after you, aod meking love to you, and wanting you to marry them ? he 'said gleefully, taking possession of Jenny's sofa, and kicking his Iseels up in the air. "It's the best joke I ever heard of—tell me some of it --oh, this is rich." Jenny Wld him all the events of the week, and Willie nearly went into con- vulsions. "But there's one thing I can't understend. Willie," she said in conclusion, "and perhaps you can help I wrote in reply to the lawyer, and here is the letter returned with the words, `not known' written at the top of the envelope." Willie did not at once look at the let- ter or even take it into his band, but only went intiie. few more squirms of merriment and kicking up his heels into the air. "Why, of course, Jen," he said when at last he could speak. "They creald- n't find, the lawyer there, for he's not there." "Not there? Where is he then ?" "In here," and Willie gleefully tap- ped his own forehead. "1 made him—I created him—and the £20,000, atid the whole affair. I wanted to see how alit the wretches would rush for you andi fawn on you, and then I thought as you are 29 its time you were getting married, and that some comfortable old codger of a widower would snap you up and tbink he's got a fortune with you. "Wasn't it a splendid idea? And it was all my own—did it all myself, and got a friend to post the letter in London, sO's to have the right post -mark. I'm always glad to do you a good turn, Jen, for -you've been a reguler brick to me," and he exu- berantly did some kicking in the air while Jenny—fainted! When she recovered consciousness Willie was supporting her, and kissing her and soothing her, and wondering what possessed her to drop away in that silly style. "That's all the thanks I get for try- ing to do you a good turn," he said, when she only burst into tears and said she must now put an end to her own Fife. "I thought you would be delight- ed—especially when there's; so many wanting to marry you. You know you are an old maid, so if you don't look alive you'll never get a man in this world." Valentine. BY EMMA P. SEABGRY. I wonder if you remember, sweetheart, One videntitie long ago, When across the fields and down the lane I trudged one night like a sighiog swain, Over the drifts of meow. With a valentine for my heart's own queen, A kitten furry aud white, • Like a ball of down in my basket hid. And how, when I finally raised the fid, It vanished from our bight ? 1 remember your tears, and the ihter years, When I took my heart, my sweet, And a blessing craved from daint Valentine As I sought in your eyes for love's own sign Ere I laid it at your feet. . If love never grew coldeve could never grow old Oh, the years have flown since then, But the heart, my deareet, you stole away, That snowy, froety Valentine's day, Has never come back again. And since then, a score of years or mo re, With smile and averted eye, • With a haughty brow and a queenly grace, And a flush on your proud and handsoive fece, You have met and passed me by. Another face shines from my household shrines Across my cold hearthstone, But how•different life would be, my dear, If only your beautiful face were here, - And your eyes looked in my own. And I wonder so often of you, sweetheart. If the world is the isaine to you ; If there lingers at times la your memory yet, For the love of our childhood a sweet regret ; For the love of your girlhood, too? Love reaches its arms to my old Valentine With toad message wherein yon niey see; Your spirit will thrill through its prison bars, To greet a love as true as the stars, And come over the years to me. If you get the reputation of being rich it's just as- good'as if you had the money." Jenny could not see it, and persisted in ending her life that very night. She would not be so mes.n and treacherous as to deceive any man into the belief that she was rich, and she was not sure but Willie had laid himself open to arrest end imprisonment by forging a letter; but whatever happened the truth must be proclaimed. "For my sake, Jen don't speak of such a thing, and I'll 'kiss you twenty times and be ever so good to you," he cried, in real alarm, a Why, if you ex- pose me I'll lose my pl and be ruined for life. But what are some- times considered little troubles, if left to themselves, soon matorlify into grave evils, producing disastecius results. This is especially true of cold in the head. The sufferer looks upon it as a trifling annoyance that need's n treatment and will speedily pass away. This is a grave i mistake. There is not case of catarrh in , existence that did ot have its ori- gin in neglected cold ip the head, and the slonger the trouble runs the more Serious the results. Cold in the head, developing into ratarrh, renders the breath foul, causes a loss of the senses of taste and smell, partial deafness, dis- tressing headaches, cqnstant hawking and spitting, and in In ny, many cases i ends up in consumptionand death. No case may have all the j symptoms indi- cated, but the more this sufferer has the greater the danger. It is obvious, there- fore, that no case of c ld in the head is shouldebe neglected fo an instant, and that to do so is cour ing further dist' ease—perhaps death.
