with a perturbed expression coming
over his facet .
"Caul see Mess Douglas ?" he asked,
then.
"Mree Douglas is away until to -mor-
row, sir."
" Ob, is any one home ?"
"There's Miss Katie, but-"
"That'll de ,» maid filarkham,in a tone
of relief, " ni see Miss Katie Douglas.
Take her this, ask her if I can see her .
on important business St Once."
Ile gave his card to the maid, who
presently returned with a grave face,
and conducted him to the drawing -room.
The gee was lit; the little room which
Markham had always associated with
Hope, for they haI often spent hours
*done there, 1ooke1 dreary and not too
tidy. The windows were open, and
Katie, as usual surrounded by trophies
of needle work, rose with a startled ner-
vous' glance from the recesses of one,
and came to meet him. Her manner
was as cold and stiff as such a very eni-
',risme uudignified person could make
it. She did not offer her hand, but
looked at Markham in no friendly spirit.
He aterwards eaid ' that the leek on
Katie's face shOwed him more of what
he himself had one than any reproach
he had ever received. The words he
had meant to utter so easily were arrest-
ecl. half way. When he did speak it
was with an effort.
" I am told by the servant that Hope
is not with you, can you give me her ad-
dress?" ,
"No, I cannot. i 'I don't know it."
Katie stood about s.x feet away from
Markhem. Be did not advauce any
nearer. A.gein his words came with au
effort.
"You must be able to tell me some-
thing about Elope," he said presently.
"When last I intiv her, she lived with
you. It is most important I should find
her at once."
"It is not at all important to us that
you should find her; I don't know where
she is -1 cannot help you in the matter."
Katie sat down once more in her win-
dow. She was altering a ball drew), and
she took the flimsy material now., be-
tween little fingere unit tretnbled.
"You are rather cruel to me, Miss
Douglas," said blankham, "you eau at
least tell me something,something about
Miss Karron, She is nothing whatever
to you."'
"Yes, it is much more suitable for
. you to call her Miss Xarron. She
is nothing whatever to you."
" That's as she and I will, in future.
Miss Douglas, I know my conduct must
appear black to you. I begin to see
something of its true colors myself,
now. My excuse is that I was insane.
Now I am sane, inehright mind has re-
turned to me."
"What a blessing that you didn't
make HATS your wite-how awful if she
had married a lunatic! No, I don't
know anything about her, and if I did 1
shouldu't.tell you."
" But I wasn't ineane in that sense 1.
Good gracious, I can't explain it to you.
Miss Doughts„ you don't know what
awful mischief you may be doing by
keeping back what little information
, you can give me. Now look here, I de-
sire you to tell roe what you know
about Hope." -
"You desire," said Katie, flingitig
down her work, and confronting him
with flashing- eyes. "Do you know that
you nearly killed Hope? Do you know
that she went away because you broke
her heart? You I I love Hope and I
hate you. Do you think I would do
anything to help you 1"
"1 bitterly repent," began Markham,
whose face had grown white.
"IYes, and what good doeyour re-
pentance do anyone? You did not take
HoPes life, but you took away that
which made her a delight to all who
knew her. You took the sun from her,
and the joy from her; you made her
name, her dear name, a lie every time
she is celled it, tOh, how miserable the
world is when men like you can be so
cruel !"
Here Katie's fortitude forsook her.
She laid her head on her banditti sob-
bed bitterly.
Her Argument.

Count Longobardi ; that wretched,
mean-spirited little Lottie Seaton helped

it till sill hour ago. Cecil came here for
a minute this evening. He was almost
wild. Jocelyn wrote him a letter which
he got at his club. I could tell hiin

Drifting Apart.
In many families oite member, often
the most intelligent and lovable, stands
alone, separate from the others, as
though an invisible wall of ice rime be-
tween him and them.
Usually, this division is cautied, not
by lack of love or good -will, but by
some difference of manner or taste. In
a word they, cecina-, keep step with the
-prevailing habit of thought of their com-
panions,
"1 knew before I married," said a
yonng wife, "that Ben made his living
by raising cattle. -But I did not suppose
that he took any special interest in them
as cattle. When he talks every day of
Alderneys and Holsteins, of marks and
pedigrees, he bores me unspeakably, and
I telt him so."
This lack of sympathy, and indiffer-
ence to what makes an essential part of
her husband's life -in other words, the
feilure to fall in step. with her husband
--will probably ensure to this wife and
her husband an unhappy domestic
future.
Young people are often unwilling to
fall in step. It is not easy for them to
preeeive that they and the friend who
differs from them can both be right.
Besides, some minds are apt to feel that
there is a certain distinction in belonging
to the minority.
Either as wife, sister, husband or
brother, if you would have a happy
family life, remember two rules:
In matters of principlestand like a
rock.
In matters of taste, swim with the
,
current.

An Answer.
Do you know you have asked for the costliest
thing
Ever made by thejlanctabove-
A %vottan's heart and a woman's life,
And a woman's wonderful love?
Do you =know you have asked- for this priceless
thing
As a ohild might have asked for a toy -
Demanding what others have died to win
With the reckless dash of a boy?
You have written my lessoni of duty out,
Manlike you have questicined me :• ,.. •
Now stand at the bar of inAwonian's soul,
Until I have questioned thee ?
You require your ibread shall be always good,
Yeur sock» and your shirts shall be whofe
I require your heart to be true as God'e stairs,
And pure as heaven your eoul !
You require a cook for your mutton and beef -
1 requires far better thing :
A sesmstress ou're wanting for stockings and
shirt -
1 want a man arid a king 1
A king for the beautiful realm called home,
And a man that the maker, God,
Shall look upon as he did the first,
And say, it is very good
I am fair and young, but the rose will fade
. From the soft young cheek oue day; •
Will you love me then quid the falling leaves,
As you did 'mid the -bloom of May?
ts your heart an ocean se strong and deep , •
I may launch my all on it tide ?
A loving woman finds heaven or hell
On the day she is insdeee bride.
-1 require all things that are good and true,
All things that a man shonld be;
If you give this all I would stake my life
To bean you demand of me.
If you cannot do this -a laundress, a cook
You can hire with little to pay ; -
But a woman's heart and a sonian's life
Are not to be won that way.

lin's ' Half a dozen congenial ' spirits
wer stetted together at a table, andone
thing and another led Allen to reel off a
full dozen of stories. The last one was
about his Tupelo constituent, Bill
Brown. Bill is an old farmer who owns
half the marshes around Allen's native
city. 'A year ago he bought a young
bull from a lawyer who is a shrewd fel-
low and known throughout Allen's dis-
trict.
"Brown wasn't quite sure of his bar-
gain," said Allen, 'so eveny time the
lawyer went that way he hedged so
much that thetlawyer grew extravagant
in his praise."
"1 tell yout Brown," said he, as he
rode by the farm -house, "that's the
finest animal in the whole country. I'd
ride any time two miles out of my
way just to pass it in your meadow. I
sold it to you for $75, but I reckon it's
worth-" t
t" How much ift it worth, cap'n ?" said
the farmer.
" %Veil,. if I was selling it to -day I
wouldn't let it go for a cent less than
$250. It's worth that and I congratu-
late you itn shaving me so neatly.'
Bill Brown felt pretty good over the
bull, and ievery time he saw the lawyer
they talked about it, thal lawyer always
repeating -that he would not sell it for
less than $250.
The layer, in the meantime, had be-
come counsel for a Mississippi railroad,
and had to appraise and settle all diffi-
culties for the corporation.
One day as he sat in his office loutish
Bill Browe came in, twirled his hat be-
tween his thumbs, and said in a wheed-
ling tone :
1 "II reckon that 'air bull is good for a
pert sum, cap'n." ''' 1
