HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1890-03-07, Page 61.; THE I-1 OfiON ,EXPOSITOR. Amy. Ned Hoyt's Luck. Lucky Ned Hoyt" wes the popular sobriquet of the railway magnate. " A man," his associates would I tell 1 you., "of only moderate talents, born in poverty, with no family or scmial iseflu- ence, yet he had mounted the ladder of success rapidly and steadily. Nothing to help him hut luck -blind luck." Let us look a little at the steps of thia ladder up which Ned climbed so fast. lie wati the sou of a poor woman, who gave him a few years' schooling, and then found him a place s as ".elevator boy in a hotel. Ned had one aim ; to find work on a railroad, and there to snake his way up. He stuck to that one idea ; he never changed it, he never for- got it. The men who used the elevator daily always found , the boy clean, al- ways polite and eager to be of use. He became a favorite, especially with one, a station master on a railway leading out of the city. To him Ned, choosing a moment when he was in a good humor, frankly told his story and his hope. Can you give me work ?" he asked. "Yes," the man said, "in the yard; but it will be hard and poorly paid. Better stay where you are. "You. never can rise in an elevator - above the fifth story," retorted Ned, laughing. He was set at handling freight on the platform. In a month he attracted the notice of all the men in the yard by his unfailing promptness, energyiand good- humored courtesy. His eyes and ears were always open, and he was eager to learn the business and the methods of the road. One day the freight -master needed a temporary helper in his cffiee, as one of the clerks was absent-sudidenly ill. He applied. to the yard -m aster for a substi- tate, " if you've got a wide-swake young fellow, not afraid to work." "Here's your man !" said the yard- master, tapping Ned on the back. "What luck Hoyt has !" said his companions as he went iuto the office. At the end of the week the sick man returned, but Ned had made himself too tuieful to be dismissed from the office. A year later a small road applied to the larger one for a man competent to sup- erintend its freight department. No- body was surprised when Hoyt was Chosen. Ned threw himself into the interests of the new road with zeal, and intro- duced into its management the methods of its older systems. At last he saw an opportunity for a grand coup bywhich to insure the success of the road, and his own as well. By building a short branch, it would tap the trade of a productive region; He urged this action upon the directors, a road was built. In a few years two great railways saw the vast advantagestold by the smaller line, and bid high for them against • each other. The short road waseit last incorporated, in one of the larger ones, and Hoyt was taken into its board of management. "Blind luck !" cried the men whom he had left behind. But as years passed and Hoyt always cheerful, energetic and good-humored, steadily rose to the -chief control of the road, never failing to see and secure an opening for its advancement or his own, his comrades began to suspect that their was some secret in his success other than that of luck. Can our boy -readers explain it ? Gaieties. -Little Edward (to caller) -- "Mr. Nobrane, would you bang yourself?" "Why, no indeed. What a question 1" Edward-" Well, pa -said you Would if you were allowed rope enough." -Dog fancier-" Yes, madam, I have all kinds of dogs here. Is there any particular breed you wish?" Old lady (who reads the papers)-" 0 anything that's fashionableLemme see an ocean greyhound." -Ella-" I know I am ugly, but I love you Erastus ; I have $20,000 a year. Will you marry me ?" Erastus -" Yea dealing, I'd marry you if you were twice as ugly as you think you are, my beautiful birdie." --This is a negro brother's explanation of race colors: "Noah's sons were all bawn white'but when Ham saw his father lyin' drunk he was so mortyfied that he turned black. Shem didn't feel so bad an' only turned yeller, and Japh- et hadn't no shame at all." -She-" George, you will have to give me.$12 to pay the grecer's last bill with." He-" Why, how's that, my dear? I thought I always geese you money enough." She-" Well, you see, dear, I had to take the grocer's money to pay for that handsome umbrella I am going to give you for Christmas." -Alfreda-Of course, I lova you, Al bert, with all my heart, but I cannot to marry you just now. Why, think, love, you have nothing but your salary of $1,000 a year. Albert -You forget, dearest, that my grandfather had five articles accepted by a magazine, which will be paid for on publication. A1freda-1 am thine! Ada -So -you have been to see your husband's folks, have you, Lulu! And how did you like his mother? Lulu - Oh, ever so much, Ada ; he made me' so much at home. Why in less than twenty four hours after I !arrived there she had me in the kitchen wiping dishes. -You can't get ahead of a Neve Ycirk sohool boy. One of them was asked the other day by his teacher why ships were were always referred to as she." "Be- cause," he replied, "they always need men to manage them." And then the teacher punished him for haaing, gotten off a stale chestnut. N. B. -The teach er was a woman. -When Wilberforce was a candidate for Parliament his brilliant sister offered a new gown to the wife of every free- man who would vote for her brether, on which the ery was raised : " Miss Wilberforce for ever." She replied, " I thank you, gentlemen, but I cannot agree with you. I do tiot wish to be Miss Wilberforce forever." -A little boy in a Milford school re- ceived his first day's instruction last week. Before night he had learned to recognize andspell one word. "Now," said his teacher, you can tell your g,randinother to -night how to spell ox." Mwgrandmether knows how to spell it," indignantly replied the loyal little fellow; " she's teached school.' -That Ormafpresent Sell. -Mrs. Cot- tonbury-" Why don't you go on ? ,It's a spl endid story !" Mr. Cottonleury Coughs, Anew s Lung Balsam was introduced to the public after its merits for the positive Cure r such diseases had been fully tested. It ex ites micfpectomtion and causes the Lungs diges- tive organs ; brings the liver to its oper hfrsse:ictve:ette?denpstihe phlegm or mucus ; changes COI Si CrOUPO the t ratnsd. erisfisetsrethoei thbtl000tdhe; effect that it Is warranted to break up the most distressing cough in a few hours' time, if not of too long standing. It Centeine opinm in any form and is warranted. to be perfectly harmless to the most delitate child.. There is no real necessity for so many deaths by consumption when Allen's Lung Balsam will pre- vent it if only taken in tilme. For Consumption, and all diseases that lead to it, such as Coughs, neglected. Colds, Bronchitis, Asthma and all diseases of the Lungs, ALLEN'S LUNG BALSAM is the Great Modern Remedy. For Croup and Whooping Cough it ie althOst tpetifit. is an old standard remedy, and sold universally at 50 cents " and $1.00 per bottle. The 25 -cent bottles • are put out to answer the constant call for a Good and Low -Priced COUGH CURE. If you have not tried the Balsam, call for a 25 -cent bottle to; test it. action, and imparts strength to the whole system. Such is the immediate and satisfactory • Allen's Lung Balsam (who had been reading aloud)-" Well, I've just reached the bottom of the col- umn, and it ends in thie way : Evaline threw herself at his feet and cried: 'Thomas Ranclyffe, why don't you use Murphy's salt for coughs and colds?' "i Just a Little. , "Only just a little, a very, very little," said the brook to the bank. And the bank was silent, and the brook wore iteedides till the earth melt- ed away and the sods floated down the sa,me stream. 'Just a little more, a very more," said the brook again. Anthe waters pressed against the roots of the willows that grew beyond the bank, and laid them bare. Just a little more," said the brook again. And the widening stream advanced with fresh force till, one by, one the wil- lows fell, and were borne sway in the torrent. "Alas l" cried the meadow, as the waters closed in on it, "if 1 had not neglected the first attack on MI bank, my fence would never have been destroy- ed; but now my protection is gone, and lam rightly served in being turned from a fruitful field into a watery waste." It isalways so with the beginning of evil. Yielded to "just a little," by- and-by it claims the whole. How It Feels. It may seem funny to watch some, other fellow Sneezing and cou:ghing with the influenza, but jast wait until you get it yourself, says the Pittsburg chroni- cle. ort ed me little It was Saturday morning that I be to have a headache, and felt in a a time as though I had been sand -bag in the back of the neck. As t passed the sand -bag seemed in a pecul- iar, retroactive way to have been larger than at first supposed at the time it was laid on. A squadron of small, active, shooting pains-ulans in advance of the regular army of discomfort -deploy- ed into the small of eny loack and pro- ceeded to go through with a light skirm- ish drill along the spinal column. Then I began to think. " Hello! That's a queer feeling. I don't seem to be as well as I was a short time ago. What's up ?" Suddenly the ulans in my back formed into a solid column between my ears and all their horses joined in one awful, long -drawn, thrilling neigh. My mouth opened before I knew what was happening and I littered a prolonged sneeze. Then another, another and an- other. Oh, that fourth sneeze! It was as though my mouth was a third -story window, and I was trying to throw my- self through it into the street below. ' Then I realized that I had it. Currents of hdt and cold air proceeded to fight for possession of me, and then, without any previous notice, my stomach deposed me as its Emperor and started a republican form of Government, throwing- up barricades - and other things. Both my eyes seemed desirous of leav- ing me, and a flood of tears began to flow. In a few hours I wished I was dead. Then 1 began to, get better. Appetite gone, eyes watery, nose raw, voice with a whistle in it, a concentrated lassitude and a general disgust. What's the use of a high protective tariff anyway, if such things as this can get into the country? W N. WATSON, General Insurance Agent -AND- Dealer in Sewing Machines. *WOMAtS:ttiM. BEING due to the presence of uric acid in the blood, is most effectually cured by the use of Ayer's Sarsapa- . fella. • Be sure you get Ayer's and no other; and take it till the poisonous acid is thoroughly expelled from the .system.' We challenge attention to this testimony : "About two years ago, after suffering for nearly two years from rheumatic gout, being.able to walk only with great discomfort, and having tried various remedies, including mineral waters, without relief, I saw by an advertise - pent in a Chicago paper that a man had been relieved of this distressing com- plaint, -after long suffering, by. taking Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I then decided to make a trial of this medicine, and took it regularly for eight Months, and am pleased to state that it has effected a complete cure. I have since had no re- turn .of the disease." -Mrs. R. Irving Dodge, 11.0 West 125th st., New York. "One year ago I was taken ill with inflammatory rheumatism, being con- fined to my house six months. Icame out of the sickness very much debili- tated, with no appetite, and my system disordered in every way. I commenced using Ayer's .Sarsaparilla and began to improve at once, gaining in strength and soon recovering my usual health.. I cannot say too much in praise of this well-known 'medicine." - Mrs. L. If there were no women, men would have no object in life ; their mustaches would cease to interest them; they wouldn't care a Chinaman Whether their collars were ironed well or not; they would have nobody to nurse them when they had the toothache, or to keep then' from believing that they were going to die, wh n an oldfashioned, stomach- ache hall its grip upon them. There would b nobody to make ice-cream for and no small edition of flesh:and blood to hug There would be nobody to fight against being kissed and then to snuggle up to a coat sleeve and take to it as naturally as a cat does cream. Most important of all, there would, be nobody to vsrfte against, to complain of and to love with all your heart and ' soul. Without women men would never get to Heaven, and without them they would never have a taste of the other place,on earth. So, when the bells . are ringing and the electric light is shining, if Tom has any sense whatever, he'll put his arm around the woman he is fondest of, thank the peel God for her, and wonder, as she does, what in the world he'd do without her. -Miss Me E.
