The Successful Sunday School
Teacher.
ewurr.
Only the other day 1 was having a
conversation with Mrs. Hannah on a
subject very near to her heart. She is
the lady superintendent of a Sunday
School connected with one of the largest
eity churches in New York.
"I always find," she hed remarked,
"that to make a success of Sunday
School teaohing requires special quail -
ties in the teacher.

me a. rather worldly sound in connection
with ect eared a work."
"The term is so oommon in the pres-
ent day, and put to auch different uses,"
she answered, " that it may be easily
misunderstood. I take it to mean mak-
ing the very best of anything and every-
thing; gathering up the crumbs, even,
so that nothing may be hist. To mak*
sUcceas of a Sunday class is to aid in
developing what is highest in the char-
acter of each member belonging te it by
the influence of an older and wider
raligious experience."
" I have heard you make obiection,

It is too common a practice novsa-

Many are asked to teach who should
only learn. I believe, if any young per-
son earnestly desirea to engage in this
work, he or she needa a. season of pre-
paration. Let them take a year of
steady attendance at the Bible Claes in
connection with their church, with this
end in view. Let the weekly teachers'
meetiugs be open to them. The young
are prone to criticise, bat they are often
clear-sighted. Let tlaem profit by what

The young imagination will grasp figures

treasure up anything of interest in con-

"Could you have better evideOce of
it than bearing the Sunday lesson in

A kindly, genial manner is very
desirable, and to be cultivated by the
young teacher, since what is merely shy-
ness will often be taken for coldness and
formality. Try to let the seholam see
that you take an interest in the .social
condition of life he occupies, as well as
in the apiritual. Don't let him think
you stand only toward him in the super-
ior attitude of teacher. Let him feel
you both meet on the common ground
of human fellowship. The faculty _ of
reading character, toot, will prove of the
greatest assistance. To know the spec-
ial atrength and apeoial weakness of
those you teach may be impossible if you
only meat one hour 'every weals; for
• this reason I would always encourage
visaing the scholars in their own homes -
One can get a glimpse of their possible
•atruggles and temptations by a know-
ledge of their private surroundings."
"But what," I asked, "would you
conaider the essential feature of success-
ful teaching ?"
" A real personal goodness," she an-
swered, tersely. "Sooner or latter,
that will tell in any class."

had been again and again charged to be

too sore to sit down, I went blubbering

the switch, and to uncouple the engine
from the train. He threw the throttle
valve open; the engine started with a
jump, and flew down the track almost
like the wind. What a time there was
atthe depot! Women screamed, and
men pale with fear angered that the
young engineer was mad. In their im-
aginations they saw the engines dash
in; together. They saw the awful e
wterk, the maugled and scalded corpses
° °Me boys and the engineer. But the
ionng engineer, with eyes fixed on the
track and hand on the lever; thought of
nothing but saving the little boys. Pres-
ently the wild engine dashed into sight.
The young engineer reversed his engine,
and soon was running with equal speed
in the Bailie direction of the wild one.
Ile gradually let it overtake him. It
scarcely jarred his engine. A nionseut
later he stood in the cab of the run-
away. In one corner sat the little boys,
crying as though their hearts would
break. Lessening the Speed, the young
engineer ran the engines alongside the
platform, and assisted the frightened
little boys into the depot, amid thee,
snouts of the happy efaroozdw.
