Only the other day 1 was having a conversation with Mrs. Hannah on a subject very near to her heart. She is the lady superintendent of a Sunday School connected with one of the largest eity churches in New York. "I always find," she hed remarked, "that to make a success of Sunday School teaohing requires special quail - ties in the teacher. "What do you mean by making 'a moms& r 1 enquired. "That has to me a. rather worldly sound in connection with ect eared a work." "The term is so oommon in the pres- ent day, and put to auch different uses," she answered, " that it may be easily misunderstood. I take it to mean mak- ing the very best of anything and every- thing; gathering up the crumbs, even, so that nothing may be hist. To mak* sUcceas of a Sunday class is to aid in developing what is highest in the char- acter of each member belonging te it by the influence of an older and wider raligious experience." " I have heard you make obiection, eeid, "to asking any one to take a dam" It is too common a practice novsa- days," was her reply, "and I deplore it. Many are asked to teach who should only learn. I believe, if any young per- son earnestly desirea to engage in this work, he or she needa a. season of pre- paration. Let them take a year of steady attendance at the Bible Claes in connection with their church, with this end in view. Let the weekly teachers' meetiugs be open to them. The young are prone to criticise, bat they are often clear-sighted. But life is thrown into the subject at once by introducing real people. The young imagination will grasp figures and invest them with interest where it' -will fail with abstract ideas. The San - day School teacher should carefully treasure up anything of interest in con- nection with the Sunday lesson, should be ea the lookout in his weekly reading for real stories of real people to illus- trate the meaning of than lesson.'"But that would require such a well- • read mind," 1taid, sighing; "are you not putting it upon a too intellectual footing?" I think not,, my friend; remember the intellect can be a grand servant, and should not be despised." "Bot .theleart must be in the work, too," I said. "Could you have better evideOce of it than bearing the Sunday lesson in miad even amid the daily distractions of the week? Of course it would take con- aiderable trouble to do this, but is not the work worth it? Can we, indeed, take enough trouble for what is really au effort to Christianize the world?" "And what of •the other qualifica Vona V' I asked again. . A kindly, genial manner is very desirable, and to be cultivated by the young teacher, since what is merely shy- ness will often be taken for coldness and formality. Try to let the seholam see that you take an interest in the .social condition of life he occupies, as well as in the apiritual. Don't let him think you stand only toward him in the super- ior attitude of teacher. Let him feel you both meet on the common ground of human fellowship. The faculty _ of reading character, toot, will prove of the greatest assistance. To know the spec- ial atrength and apeoial weakness of those you teach may be impossible if you only meat one hour 'every weals; for • this reason I would always encourage visaing the scholars in their own homes - One can get a glimpse of their possible •atruggles and temptations by a know- ledge of their private surroundings." "But what," I asked, "would you conaider the essential feature of success- ful teaching ?" " A real personal goodness," she an- swered, tersely. "Sooner or latter, that will tell in any class." An Advertisement appeered in the London Advertiser's weekly edition not very long ago from a man in Temby Bay, Manitoulin 'eland, named Ibboa son, in which he spoke of his desire to secure a Glaristiert woman or spinster as housekeeper or wife. Of course the ad- vertisement was read by many people, among vvhorn was a widow in Perth, mother el two children, who answered it, inquiring for particulars. The gen- tleman wrote a reply, according to a correspondent, in which he described his house and worldly goods, and ex- plained that he desired someone to -take charge of his household. "1 remember a terrible whip- ping my father gave me when I was nearly sixteen years old. I never loved him so well afterwards. I never would have forgiveu him; but when I had graduated at college at the head of my clasa, and delivered the valedictory, the old man came round and apologised for that ‘lickinn and I forgave him.
