" My son l" screamed Margery. "lie's

"Eh! Wow! thet's queer," said
Quentin the bold. 'But I'd thresh

Why ever did a fine big dame like yer-

" "Just because he was such a bit,"
said Margery, her tears changing to
laughter ; "Y°u can hardly match
him
for s dwarf. All dwarfs make a good
living; I hsd to get my liviug, and the
role of giantess pays poorly. You EBB,
sorae one is always taking the shine off
me by being bigger. But you can't
make yourself small. Oh no ! You see,
rile and Alexander the Great can fill a
tent any time. The trouble is he will
drink; and when he's drunk, he's cross
and won't show off. He has no Con-
science left about doing his duty to an
-admiring public, and the admiring pub-
lic gets angry and wants its money
back. Besides, Alexander the Great
will surely kill himself if he goes on
with whisky. Oh, he is a great trial,
is Alexander? fie will wear his best
clothes every day, BO it takes a mint of
money to dress him. Now, on the road
no one would suppose that I am a first •
class giantess, but you ought to e6e me
when I'm got up to exhibit."
"He will hsve that improving op-
portunity," said Nicolas.
And what do you do ?" asked Quen-
tin of Nicolas.
"I furnish the brains of the Consoli-
dated Exhibition, I correct the coil -
tames, I write the bills, I make the
speeches, I play parts in the Penny
Theatre. 1 am a. factotum."
"I never sa.w a factotum before,"
said Quentin, "but I knew you were
learned as soon as I heard you speak ;
you use far larger words thsn the min-
ister or Mr. Murdock. What does yon
do?"

" Yon " was Thomas, who had gone
to feed the two fine horses that were
tied on the farther side Of the van.
"Thomas distributes handbills, beets
the drum, helps work the Unequalled
'European RenownedWax-Works,drives,
tends the horses, sets up the tent. A
very useful man is Thomas, but without
enthusiasm."
And do you like show lifer Is it
nice ?" cried Quentin.
"1 vette born in a show, brought up
• in a show; I do my duty as becomes an
honest showman. It is true I have my
ideal. My ideal is not a show; my
ideal is a small eating house with red
half curtains and a pot of ivy on the
deek—a house where a chop and a cup
of tea good and reasonable could be
had with the morning paper and a
. canary -bird in a cage. I desire to have
-in such an eating house a presiding gee
nius who could cook a chop to a toren',
an angel who understood potatoes and
beefsteak and a veal pie. Sach is not
my fate ; I shall die as I live—in a
show."
•"I hope you will," said Mistress Mar-
gery, "for I never could manage Alex-
ander the Great without you."
Mistress Margery had been clearing
away supper. It was six o'clock ; there
would stilt be four hours' light.
"I think," said the dame, " thet I
will examine the Unequaled and Re-
nowned ; they must be ready for Cal-
lender."
Tho:nas and Nicolas took from the
van two large boxes and opened them.
One seemed filled with bundles of pa-
per. 'Thomas coolly unrolled these re-
vealing to the horrified eyes of Quen-
tin a dozen and a half human hesde—
heads with locks short and long, men's
and women's, dark, light, smooth, shag-
gy; heads with wide open eyes, blue,
black or gray; heads with vivid hues of
life, with a set grin on the lipa, Thomas,
unmoved, spread the Thyestes feast on
the grass. Quentin was frozen,: with
horror. Margery, seated on the turf,
with a work basket at her side, said to
him,
"Led, hand- me yon head with the
long hair. What's the matter? Are
you going to faint ?"
" Whaur — got you — sae mony—
holds ?" stammered Quentin.
" Belshazzar ! he thinks they are
real ?" shouted Nicolas. " I will put it
in a placard 1"
Margery laughed till she cried. Even
Thomas laughed, saying apologetically,
that he had not laughed for five years.
"What are they?" insisted Quen-
tin.
"They are the Unequalled European
Renowned Waxworks. And that. head
I told you to give me is the Emprees
Josephine led to execution.—Find me
her body, Nicolas ; I muat make her a
new gown."
" Margery," said Nicolas, solemnly,
" I wish- you would read history-. It
was not the empress Josephine that was
led to execution; it was Queen Marie
Antoinette."
"1 don't see as it makes much differ-
ence. What is in a name?" said Mar-
gery, unconsciously quoting Shakes-
peare. "As to reading, I never read
anything ; I would read a cook -book if
• I had it. Now, Nicolas, set her head
on her body, and 1 will get her a new
gown. Elow would red look ?- I could

"Margery," remonstrated Nicolas,"
"1 have a conscience. When we pro-
mise in a plaeard to instruct the rising
generation, we should not encourage
them in the belief that Marie Antoin-
ette went to execution in a red velvet
gown. She wore 0 white dress, and a
white cap, both dirty and shabby."
'We must have some respect for our-
selves," said Margery. "No one would
come to a wax -show of beggarly clothes;
they can see them in any of the wynds.
If you want her dressed in white,
I can take the wedding - dress of
Queen Viettoria ; I think it would
be more popular to show Queen
Victoria in her nursery holding the
princess -royal on her knee.—Boy, see if
you can hunt me out a little child's
head with yellow hair."
"I approve of that," said Nicolas;
"it will -be a good moral lesson to
mothers who visit our show. But I en-

a snug corner of the station house, "but

struck was in a Georgia town not mere

"One day I received a telegram from
a prominent young man of the place, no-
tifying me that his father had beep
murdered and robbed in the streets, and
asking me to come and work up the case.
The next train bore me to the town, and
as I stepped off the cars I met the town
marshal. He had a badge and a sort of
club stick, and I asked him if he was
the marshal.
"Yea, and I am looking for an Atlan-
ta detective.'
" 'I guess I'm your man.'
" 'All right. Let's get into the 'bus
and drive uptown.'
'No. I'd rather walk up and talk
about the case.'
" Well, I'm in a hurry. The coroner's

put me on my guard.

maladies. That Ayer's Sarsaparilla
is the best cure for Indigestion, even
when complicaedwithLiver Complaint,
is proved by the following testimony
from Mrs. Joseph Lake, of Brockway
Centre, Mich.: —
" Liver complaint and indigestion
made my life a burden and came near
wain, -1a3r existence. For more than
/our -years -I suffered untold agony, was
reduced almost to a skeleton, and hardly
had strength to drag myself about. All
kinds of food distressed me,_and only
the most delicate could be digested at
all. Within the time mentioned several
physicians treated me without giving re.
lief. Nothing that I took seemed. to do
any permanent good -until I commenced
the use of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, which
has produced wonderful results. Soon
after commencing to take the Barsapae
rills I could see an improvement in my
condition. My appetite began to return
and. with it came the ability to digest
all the food taken, my strength lute

months of faithful attention to yOut
