Mothers and Men.
A mother habitually indulgent to
her children called her eldest born—a
boy of ten—back when he had left her
on a street corner. The lad cowered
under the severity of eye and accent.
'Never dare to leave me, in the
street again without raising your hat!"
he said. "It is a token of respect
you owe to every woman, and never
forget that your mother is a woman !"
The reproof was double barbed. As-
sociation with mother and sisters is
excellent practice in an exercise Jhat
cannot be abated without injury to him
who takes the liberty. "The fellow
who nods a cavalier welcome or fare-
well to his sister at the window or in
the street, will, •with the moat gallant
intentions, some day, in a fit of ab-
stra.etiou or when hurried by business
into forgetfulness of his company man -
mere, nod as carelessly to some other
fellow's sister and score a point in favor
of the rival whose hand, from the
force of early habit and long usage,
moves Involuntarily toward the cap
brim at the approach of any woman
whose face is familiar to him.
A nod is not a bow. To nod to a
woman is open disrespect. The mother
who carves these two sentences and the
import thereof upon the mind of her
boy builds so much better than she
knows as to merit the gratitude of her
sex.
One f the most mortifying experi-
ences oj my early married life was the
. visit t a our country house of a dis-
tinguished man, than whom the State
held none abler in his profession. We
had invited several friends to meet
him, and -the dinner given in his honor
passed 'off snaoothly. The lion roared -
in a perfectly satisfactory manner,
winning naiversal admiration. Coffee
was served on the verandah, and the
evening being cool, the great man called
for his hat. He might have, asked per-
mission from the women present to as-
sume it, we thought, but orators must
preserve their vocal cords from rust.
As the chilliness increased we adjourned
to the library, where a fire had been
kindled. There, in the assembled'
presence of our choicest neighbors, the
great man were his hat until the hour
of separation ! The inference, born out
by subsequent discoveries, was inevis
table. He was a commoner of the com-
monality and. vulgar ingrain. It ought
to have been impossible for him to
commit such a breach bf good manners_
in any circumstances. The varnish of
surface—and unaccustomed--courtes ,
like other cheap and patent dressing,
requires frequent renewal and cannot
be warranted to wear.
As a grateful contrast I offer another
authentic incident. A true gentleman,
driving through the country with his
wife and children, stopped at a small
farmhouse to inquire the way. A
child on the front seat of the carriage
had a view of him as he knocked at
the door.
"Papa is talking to a lady," chirped
the little one. "I can't see her, but I
know, because he took off his hat when
the door cipened, and he is standing
with it in his hand."
The " lady ' followed him to the
steps as he returned to the carriage.
Her sleeves were rolled up to her
!shoulders: she wore a shabby calico
gown without a collar. Her hair was
unkempt, her hands and arms dripped
with suds. Her parting directions were
shrilly:nasal and ungrammatical. The
man who ,appeared beside her as a
prince beside a serf, stood with his
noble head bared as in a royal presence.
" How could you ?" queried the
quick eyed occupant of the front seat.
"She wasn't a bit of a lady."
"She was a woman, my boy : and a
gentleman is always a gentleman for his
own sake."
I saw a man who calls himself a gen-
tleman kiss his betrothed the other
day, with his hat set immovably on his
head as if it had grown there with his
growth and strengthened with his
strength !
Fancy a condition of mind and body
that could make such a thing possible
in a ,Christian land and in the nine -
peal' century.—Horne and Fireside.

—The cold wave reached Winnipeg
Friday 13thand the thermometer dropped
to twenty degrees below zero.
—The Provincial Board of Health' at
its meeting in Montreal last week re-
. solved to draw the attention of the
tOovernment to take steps to resist an
invasion of cholera or other contagious

—A disastrous fire occurred recently
a mile out of Gore Bay village, Algoma,
by which the barn, hay, straw, grain
and farming implements of Donald
Currie were totally destroyed. It is a
mystery how the fire originated, and°
there‘ was no insurance. One misfor-
tune follows another, as on the pre-
ceding -night he 'had a dozen sheep
worried and killed by dogs.

death, on. Tuesday, 10th inst., of Rev.

of High Churchism in the diocese of

—Rev. Thomas Geoghegan of St.
Matthew's Episcopal church, flamilton,
is telling a good story about himself.
It appears that a young B.ornan Catholic
who was living in the house at which
Mr. Geoghegan lately boarded, was
anxious to marry a pretty .girl with
whom he had fallen violently in love.
For this purpose he applied for a 'dis-
pensation to the Roman Catholic Bis-
lhop, who; however, hesitated before

giving his consent. Hoping to bring I
matters te a head, the young man 1
threatened if the Bishop refused his
request to get the Protestant clergy-
man, who bearded in his house, to tie
the knot. What is his name?"
queried the Bishop. "Geoghegan,"
was the reply. " How is it spelt ?"
quoth the Bishop. "G -e -o -g -h -e -g -a -n,))
spelled the youth. "Mercy !" said the
Bishop. "Who would have dreamed
that a man with such a name should be
a heretic !"
—There is said to be a great amount
of diacontent among the farmers of
Arran township, Bruce county, over
high taxes and the present council are
in danger of being cast overboard
bodily. Last year being a tough look-
ing year, the council deterthined to levy
as little as possible, and. as a result
threw themselves short. This year
that shortage had to be made up and
the result is a heavy *mese of taxes
this year, for which the 'present council
has to pay th p piper. --This as a general
thing is about the way thee public
usually reason. -

acre respectively is 29.91, 31.81; 39.31.

Africa, ready to be lionized by the
British people, Dr. Livingstone's son is
on his death -bed at St. .Albans in the
deepest poverty. He is hardly likely
o live till Stanley returns. He gets

—The grand jury has found a tru
bill against Mr. Parke, Editor of th
North London Press, for libelling th

the President of the Rhine Province had
refused to receive the miler's cOmmit
tee on the ground that he already knew
what the demands were, immediately
telegraphed to him a direct and peremp-
tory order to receive the deputation and to
report in full the men's statement of
their grievances.
—William Marquis, aged 17, son of a
farmer in Maine county, was arrested
at school the other day, charged withu
wrecking the east 'bond express at
Kellers on October 24. The boy con-
fessed. He said he started from
Wabash to Peril on foot that morning.

the fact that he had secreted mi his
person thin piece of steel which
could be slipped into the handcuffs and
render them useless. Bailiff English,
as a preeaution, not only handcuffed
both the prisoners' hands, but double -
locked the cuffs and then sat beside

A HORSE 'VVHO CAN TALK!
Everybody has heard of a" horse laugh,"
but who has ever seen an equine gifted
with the power of speech? Such an artima1
would be pronounced a miracle; but eco
would the telegraph and the telephone a
hundred years ago. Why, even very re-
cently a cure for consumption, which
universally acknowledged to be scrofula
affecting the l ngs, would have been looked
upon as miraculous, but now people are be-
ginning to realize that the disease 18 not in- -
curable. Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dis- .
covery will cure it, if taken in time and, given a fair trial. This world-renowned
remedy will not make new lungs. but it
will restore diseased ones to a healthy state
when other mans have failed. ThousandS
gratefully testify to this. It is the most
potent tonic, or strength restorer, altera-

Make it Plain to -the Children.
When older people talk to children I
don't believe they realize how strange
their words sound to the little folks
sometimes. Now I knew some boys
and girls long ago who were very fond
of the hymn which had in it this line,
"Thousands of children stand," and -
they a1w4ys supposed the words to be,
" Those ends of children stand."
Another little girl was much puzzled
to tell why her mother and father sang
in church, " Sweet Owl of Prayer,
when th p words really were, "Sweet
Hour of Prayer." And a dear child of
five or six years, looking up from her
evening prayers, said : Mamme, vslnia

Undertaking Warerooms
If you want good value for your money,
don't forget to give M. Robertson a c.all
before buying elsewhere You will find
his stock very large and varied, and prices
to suit the times.
The Undertaking Department ia replete
with every sanitary convenience, as re. e
'commended by the Undertakers' Associa-
tions of the continent. We pay particular
attention to the science of embalming, as
demonstrated by eminent professors at the
Toronto Scheol of Medicine, and are bet-
ter prepared than ever to furnish and con-
duct funerals on more reasonable terms to,
our patrons than any so-called "reform
undertakers," with their advertising clap-
trap.
