HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Huron Expositor, 1887-12-09, Page 6THE MORON EXPOSITO.R. The Algoma District. ITS MINERAL RESOURCES, RAILWAYS SW. SAULT STE MARIE, Nov. 24, 18;87. The coming in of the .railway has caused among other things a great deal of prospecting for mines to be done in the Sault district this year, and several important discoveries of gold, silver, iron, copper and galena have been the result. On the American side of the river the rocks are concealed by thick beds of clay and sand, but on the Cana- dian side they come to the surface in hills and ridges near the shore, rising into small mountains farther back. Some true fissure veins occur in them only a few miles from the town holding RICH MINERAL DEPOSITS of various kinds, and especially in the Gras Cap range to the west and in the vicinity of Garden River to the east. Having been out exploring in thedistrict for the past month or more with a party of rock men, I write from personal knowledge on the subject, and there is no doubt that present indications point to considerable activity in mining here next year. A syndicate of American capitalists have been examining and buying up promising claims this season, which they intend to open in the spring. The characterof the country is general- ly rough and rocky, but the . valleys and river front are excellent land as a rule, and there is good timber all over it,hard- wood on the uplands, mostly maple, and pine, apruce and 'cedar on the colder low grounds. It is pretty _well settled for about twenty miles back, but many of the homesteads are abandoned, often those with the best buildings on, as the owners were more progressive than the others and would not stay where they could not do well. What strikes one in traveling all along the north shore is the success of TRE ONTARIO GOVERNMENT in colonizing such a rugged, uninviting country. 11 Mowat were Premier of the Dominion, he would settle up the North- west in iao time. One morning shortly after starting out to cross the Korah mountains, a fearful storm came on all at once, which com- pelled us to run for the nearest clearing and take refuge in a deserted house in it. The race forcibly reminded one of Tam O'Shanter'a famous ride, the geologist of the party leading by a good many lengths over rocks, fallen logs, reviews; and other obstacles. Whiles holding on his guid blue bonnet, Whites crooning o'er some auld Scotch sonnet. We were eleven hundred feet above the lake, the wind blew a perfect gale, and the rain anci snow came dashing down in flying sheets. It was a grandly wild scene, but we did not enjoy it very much. It lasted too long, over three hours. We tried to keep up our spirits by smoking tobacco and telling stories, but it was hard work, being wet to the skin and no dinner in sight. Then irn- enediately in rear of the house, there was a lonely little grave with a rude fence of poles around it, and to which a mother's heart likely turns sadlyenough many a time frore some distant part of the world; for near it on the bare rock was cut in scrawling characters Ronnie Stewart died 1875. Parents gone to New Zealand." .A. small flower -pot was still standing On the middle of the grave, but everything in it was dried up. This feature of our surroundings did not tend to make us more cheerful; but in the very midst of the storm AN UNEXPECTED INCIDENT raised our spirits and gave a homelike appearance to the wretched old house. As we sat on the floor with our backs to the wall looking out the front door very drearily, the "old man" suddenly jump- ed up and shouted: " What was that ? " and running out we found to our great surprise a fine, little, thoroughbred Skye - terrier, half starved and shivering from head to foot as if he had the fever and ague. Where did he come from? The most reasonable theory is that he was lost by some lady off th e Canadian Pacific railway about sixty miles to the north and had wandered all the way through the woods, living on whatever he could pick up. Each nursed him in turn while the others danced around him like a lot of school boys, and his coming into our camp was regarded on all hands as an omen of good luck, which proved to be true, for the very next day we discover- ed a rich copper mine. Here, I cannot help reflecting on the great difference a single day has made in the circumstances and prospects of this little dog. Yesterday- he was a poor, homeless outcast, but to -day he is amply provided for, and sleeps cozily on the foot of my bed. Another thing, when I look at him with his long shaggy kair, I wonder how it is that a. lady invariably chhoses her husband, and her pet dog on thie, most contrary principles, for every woman likes to get a good look- ins,- man, but prefers the ugliest poodle she can scare up. NOTES. We have had winter here for the last three weeks. 'Who shall say after this where senti- ment may not be found. An old half- breed here was at his urgent request buried beside his dead horse. The climate around Lake Superior is -very disagreeable at this season of the year. About three changes a day is the - rule, with prevailing raw winds. Very few of the sub -contractors on the Sault railways made any money this year. There was such a rush of them here in the spring that prices were cut down too low in the most of cases. The bridge acros the St. Mary's river at the head of the rapids is nearing com- pletion. The atone work is finished and five spans of the iron work in place, but the Canadian Pacific Railway will not be in here for six weeks yet, to connect with the two American roads already in. In the American Sault they have a splendid waterworks system, with six miles of pipe, laid mostly through rock and quick -sand, and as fine a purripingi apparatus as is to be found on the contie nent, with power to throw three streams' at once over 125 feet in the ainand they are adding two and a•half miles more this fall. Total cost only $53,000. D. A Home -Made Fancy Table. Have any of you an old-fashioned wash stand, made of pine, whieh is stored away in the garret? If so, get it out and see what a pretty article of furniture can be made out of it. One with a hole in the top for a wash bowl, bars on the side for towels and drawer and shelf below is the very thing to convert into a table for books of music. Remove the back piece and bars and nail a smooth board over the top. Stain the whole a very -dark color or an ebony. Covei both shelves with dark olive or cardinal plush and put a straight valance all around the lower shelf. Finish the top with a chenile fringe. A much cheaper one can be made by gilding the legs andcov- ering the shelves with dark green felt; make atkr, inge by taking a plebe of the felt three inches wide and slashing very narrow; tack on with small brass -head- ed tacks and around each leg at the join- ing of the lower shelf tie a bow of satin ribbon. If You Would be Happy. Keep your temper. Gain a little knowledge every day. Make few promises, and speak the truth. - Give full measure and weigh with a just balance. Consent to common custorn, but not to common folly. Be cautious in believing ill, but more cautious of reporting it. Have courage to wear your old clothes until you can pay for new ones. Think of heaven with hearty purpose and strong hope to get there. Do good to all, that thou mayest keep thy friends and gain thine enemies. Count your resources; find out what you are not fit for, and give up wishing for it. -Good Housekeeping. How to be Nobody. It is easy to be nobody, and we will, tell you how to do it. Go to theidrink-I ing-saloon to spend your leisur4 time.' You need not drink niueh now just a little beer or some other drink. In the meantime play dominoes, chec ere, or something else to kill time, so th t you I will be sure not to read anyj useful brinks. If you read anything, let it be the dime novel of the day; thus o on, keeping your stomach full anc your head erupty, and yourself playin time - killing games, and iri a few yea s you will be nobody, unless you shoul turn out a drunkard or a professiona gam- bler, either of which is worse th n no- body. There are any number of young men hanging about saloons, just ready to graduate and be nobodies. President Cleveland and Wife, Especially the ladies who have at the White House during t week have remarked the growing His called e past orpu- lency of the President and Mrs. \sieve - land, says a Washington correspoisdent. They say that each has fattened o the extent of at least, 25 pounds sin e the 1st of September, and that the rresident has become really stout. W es Mrs. Cleveland was married she 1 ei hed a little less than 130 pounds, and o ing to her height did not appear t4 b that heavy. There are those of he f lends who have seen her during the as week who say she will tilt the beau a 170; but those figures are a littlf hi h. She will not weigh 160, yet she 'is er near that mark, The out -door exercise espe- cially the daily drives she t ke , has done most of it. Mrs. C1evelanl s ldom drinks wine or any other stirnul n She only wants a brisk walk to work u. her appetite for breakfast or lunch, and if she cannot go out of doors she rambles bout the house. A servant says she often runs up and down stairs two steps at a a time, and can swing her arm a b bind her back like those of a windmill and that she is the most e,gile woman •fl her size in the city. Mra. Cleveland is.,tilly as tall as her husband, and, alt cfugh she has developed into a woman of eri- ous thought, she can enjoy a rolli k as much as anybody, and when she at Inde the theatre, which is often, she h 4 no scruples about laughing heartily filen she -is amused, or sees anything to atugh at. She is of a naturally happy apo- sition, and eats and sleeps like one who is determined to let nothing in life % orry her. r:A The President grows corpulent from natural causes. He would get ft t on bread and water, yet he does not li -e on such transparent diet. He can at as 'large a beefsteak as a rail -splitter, c rink his three cups of coffee fot hreailfast, with pancakes and rolls and the otcete ras which make up a good breakfast. He does not take half as muelt ixe cise as Mrs. Cleveland, and that whic he does undergo is of an entirely Idiffrent character. - He never hurries He walks slowly and with deliberation Spine - times -he takes two moves to e ch step in going upstairs. 'When he anc his wife return from a drive she invar ably helps herself from the carriage, and runs ahead into the house. If it is o t at Redtop she hitches the horse, provi4led they are in a one-horse vehicle, and hen beats him into the house. If it is a the White House she goes upstairs on the run, probably two steps at a leap, rind the exercise she gets is healthful, N hile that he has is not very effective. A od many stories have been printed a but the President's diet. ' Some of t em have grains of truth, but moat of t em have been exaggerations. He is n t a gormandizer, but a healthy eater. He is a big man, possessed of splendid di- gestive organs, and he satisfies his de- sires as far as he can withou gonna' diz- ing. His complexion at this time, the brightness of his eyes and his gro th show that his liver, blood and sto ach are in good order, which could not e if he overloaded his stomach every c ay. The President likes a bottle of ale ii .a sniff of something stronger with us lunch or dinner, arel is especially f nd of a bottle of beer before retirie at night. He says they assist diges ion and produce ease of the nerve's. In ny event, the President and Mrs. Cleve' nd are growing so stout that it can be ob- served even as they drive through he streets, and they appear to be ab u as happy as clams at high tide. - - 1 Simple and Artistic. The following suggestions, from tihe columns of an exchange, will undoubt el- / ly be acted upon by some of our reade s. The first, for a clock, is simple, and, if the work is neatly done, cannot help resulting in a pretty and ueeful on: a - merit : i 1 • "Take a common pine box, twelve inches long, five inches high; use yolur own ingenuity to turn or fashion, olut four standards for the corners about atm inch high. Purchase an ordinary little circular clock -then may be found for a dollar, but two dollars will get one with a handsome circular frame around the face -saw out a circular piece from the centre of the front side of the box, jest large enough to admit the clock face aid show about one half-inch of the fra ne around the face, then cover the Iex smoothly with rich dark red plush, 14ut the clock in the box with the plush, and fasten on. Have ready Eome molding about an inch wide, which may be pro- cured at a trifling cost from any picture - frame dealer; bronze the molding care- fully With any good bronzing powder -I use that put up by the Biamond Dye Company -then glue the molding firmly around the edges of the box, and bronze the standards. Now, to beautify the Iclock, find some plaster of Perils state - ate, eight or _ten inches long, four or five inches wide, and not too high; to look well on the top of the clock, bronze it to compare with the molding, and place on top of the box, and you have a handsome parlor ornament." 1 "The many frames in country homes which a' few years ago were filled with mottoes are just the right size, when turned around and hung panel fashion, for holding two cabinet pictures. A mat can be cut from any 'plain lead -col- ored paper, with a strip of gilt paper around the pictures. Have the space betwen the pictures 'just as wide as the distance of the pictures from the frame." e -Mr. Muir, of London township, has been engaged by the directors of the Avonba,nk cheese factory for next sea- son. He comes well recommended. Mr. Townsend, the popular manager of the above named factory for several years past, has gone into farming. -On Sunday night, 20th ult., the barn of Mr. James Gilmartin, of Logan, was destroyed by fire. While hie son was attending to chores in the stable one of the horses kicked the lantern, upsetting it and setting fire to the straw, and tile building was soon enveloped in flames, destroying everything, including a horse and 200 bushels of oats. -The Sebringville literary society re- cently disaussed a rather ticklish ques- tion, viz.: Resolved, that a clean, cross woman is preferable to a dirty, careless, good natured one. Mr. H. B. Kihne (captain), with. Messrs. Hamilton, Fair, Parker, Kastner and King, champions of the affirmative, while Mr. Feich (cap- tain), with Messrs. Scarth, Taylor, Pfrimmer, Durst and Davis upheld the merits of the dirty woman. We have not learned the result of the debate but expect the woman with claws came out first best. Consumption Cured.
