HE HURON EXPOSITOR.
•
From Aigoma.'
BLIND Rivma P. O. Januaaa- 10th 1887.
DEAR EXPOSItO-R. take MIRA
pleasure,lfa perusing your excellent paper
and thought I waida send you a few
lines to let old friends at home know
how we prospering up here in the
wilds of Algoma. In the winter time
our mails come very irregularly, but we
are hoping for better 'times soon. Work
has been commenced an the new rail-
road and AVe are to have ral i communi-
cation with the front in a year, and the
people here wish - it . gaud; speed. There
is a great demand for men, and con-
tractors • cannot get I enough. Already
sonic two thousand a,re at work taking
out ties and bridge timber and the road-
way is being cut out from Algoma Mills
to Sault Ste Marie.- When this road is
complet,.qi it will give _.direct communi-
cation from east to: west. It is said
that cars will be running on the road
within eii.diteen months, anal so we may
expect lively times while the road is
being built at any rate. The lumbering
business is • very brisk this winter all
over awl men are very s‘atece.
One great mistake is the running of
the new railway .alang the lake shore
instead ' of tapping the countryback
apiece, Where the land is good and the
settlers a.. -e thicker.: Along the lake
shore the laud is rocky, but the en-
gineers say the track is easier made, and
it is not to snit the farmer, but the
capitali,-t, that the read is being built.
There is lots of good hardwood timber
that would find a' good market hailthe
railway leen built north ot the shore,
and this would have been a great boon
to the in -w settlers. I
A -great litany ruhv settlers came in
last fall, and there is no doubt but this
country, is going ahead. Most of the
settlers .are well satisfied. Speculation
is rife here just now.. Land along the
railway has gone up about 100- per- cent.,
and is changing hands rapidly from the
pioneer t) the capitalist and speculator ;
the farmer, of .course, going further
back „taking up. a new farm and starting
in lite again. The (lay is not far dis-
tant when we will have as good facili-
ties here as you have in old liurn now.
The country, of course, is rougher, but
our land id good, tirritl we will have fine
farms here yet. Farmers had good
Crops this season, and are doing well.
I have- not,yet heard the result of the
Provincial elections.; I hope, however,
the good old county hf Huron has done
her duty. I -see honest Thomas Gibson
has been nominated attain for East
Huron, I hope he still be successful, as•
ant aArno-st sure -he will. There are
three of his old supporters right here -
one froM Grey and two from Morris,
and we are right sorry that we cannot
go and; give the 'old man and the good
cause one more lift. NN7-e hope; how-
ever, that if our votes arelost in East
Huron they will not .be in Algoma when •
the election .comes an next sprimr, as We
always intend to abide true to the old
flag.
Myself and many of mY neighbors are
in the /umber woods this winter. In
this way we prOVIde--- the wherewithal
to carry us through the summer, and it
- comes in real handy, too. Although
we are -away back from settlement and
civilization, we like the work. Our
wages are S'20 per month and board. The
board is good, and • all the Huronites in
camp are well and doing well. We are
liming a good wintk..r„ Thele has not
been much snow yet, only about a foot
--deep on the. level. We had a very- cold
spell at New Years, when the ther-
mometer was 20 helow.zere, but. it. only
lasted that way ationt three days. We
all worked on New Years' day. No
more at present Xours 'F ruly

He had a baek load of feather dusters
as he rang the door -bell on Montt:Min

inches and -.aid nothiug- was wanted, he
inquired, Madam, 1wiil you kindly in-
form ine who lives nOxt door ?"

" Lady puts on a good deal of style,
doesn't she ?"

I thought so, That's the way with
those sort of people they put it all on
their backs. I wked her if she didn't
-want a duster to dust oltflier uphelstered
4truiture and bric-a-brac, and she slam-
med the door in my face. She didn't
have any to dust, you see. People who
have plush furniture and articles of virtu
and taste always want may goods.
Pleasant day, madam !"

-The Detroit Free Press of the 17th
inst. gives the following: Yesterday
afternoon a very queer -looking caravan
left the ferry steamer Victoria and halt-
ed on the American side for custom
house supervision. It was a hybrid vehi-
cle, drawn by two horses, a grey and a
sorrel, while another sorrel, taking a
holiday, was led, }militia. The concern
was ou runners, but a set of wheels,
strapped behind, showed it to be, in the
strict sense of the w(nd, amphibious. It
was covered with a elose canvas cover,
very broad, fiat and ;squat, through the
top of which emerged a stove -pipe,, giv-
ing a volume of smoke, suggestive i
of warnith and fried' baton within. At ;
either end was a window, about the siz) 7
of an envelope now affected by boarding-
.sehoot girls. In this vehicle David
Hinchls-y, a stalwart -looking farmer, is
movinu; his family from a point some dis-
tenee vast of Toronto to Sedgwick coin-
ty in South-western Kansas. When the
cloth at the end of the wagon was open- I
ed and the customs officer peered in it
was seen that the canvas was stretched
over a wooden coVer, and that the wife
and four children of kr. Hinebley had a
place at least- sufficiently, warm.: A bed
extended across the rear of the wagon, si
coal fire burned in' the stove in the.
centre, four boys, the eldest about 16
and the youngest ahasidsome little fellois
of 5, were bestowed about in varibps at-
titudes, and a fine bull dog lay beside
the fire. When the iespection was com-
plete Mr. Hinchley inquired the • road
