The Culture of Flax.
At the recent meeting of the East
Huron Farmers' Institute at Brussels
Mr. D. Robertson of Grey read an in-
struetive paper on flax culture, of which
the following is the 'essence; Flax has
been grown pretty xtensively in dif-
ferent parts of this province for a great
many years. Amonis other places we
read of flax works being built in the vil-
lage of ,Strectsville, County of Peel, in
the year 1866, at a cost of $100,000,
_about 100 hands being employed ' the
year round. The quantity of flax re-
quirest to ca,rry on the mill (luring the
year -verts about 3,000 toes, that is ,as it
was taken from the tAid, seed and all.
It is said the llax was sown principally
on low and flat lands and -the yield was
from to 3.1 tons per ;acre. Flax culture
is now carried on to a considerable ex-
tent in the neighboring counties of
Perth. Wellington land Waterlog and
is becoming established in some parts
of this county, and Promises to supply
an alternating crop in the routine of the
farm. In my opinion ffax eau be grown,
to advantage, on recently reelaimed low
lands. Land of this description cannot
be made to produce profitably any of the
ordinary farm crops without being well
draine.d, white under a partial draiu-
age a crop of flax will, come
to fell perfection, so that a return
could be got from larild of that descrip-
tion by a crop of flax] before being auf-
ficien ly underdrained so as to produce
profitably the ordinary farm crops. In
my a ieion ..flax can be grow!) profitably
en ratelt laud which is newly broken
4p. It is a capital thing to rot the sod
and o- coarse will greatly facilitate the
work of tevelling the field. 1 do not think
flax can be grown profitably on,
°Id land or land that bas been tilled for
a lone time. Last year I had a field of
low I. nd which I recently cleared and.
had i fairly well underdrained. I plow-
ed pa t of the field in the fall and the
remainder in the spring. I sowed the
field •vith flax on the Ilith day of April,
harra ved the field wldt before sowing
and a wed the flax as' evenly as I could
by h rid giving a bushel and a peek to
each aere. I harrowed it once more
after -owing. The flax Came up in due
time rul looked veryl clean with the ex-
eepti n of some timothy that made its
ranee in the part of the field that
was iiowed in the fall. A few thistles
made their appearance in this part also,
whilethe part that was plowed in the
sprin was almost free fro-rgraes or
other weeds, At $12 per ton, the price
whicl 11 received for the flax, I realized
Mist),i acre. The polling cost $3.18 per
acre and the seed 1.87J, centa, costing
for seed and. pulling $7.034 per •acre.
Deducting- that from $20 wiII leave $12-
94-. cents. I know from what saw of
that feId if it had all been plOwed in
the spring the cost of pulling would
have ; emn less and the yield greater.

them in good plain English. In a word

Welsh Rare Bit.
There is no dish more toothsome -4o
those who like it -than Welsh rare Ibit.
The editor of the American Dairyman
gives the following recipe for making it;
which looks as if ft was about the right
thing:
Take a half pound of good whole milk
cheese and break it up to the size of
cherries, mix with it a teaspoonful of
dry mustard, and add a pinch of cayenne
pepper. Put in a piece of good butter
the size of a pigeon's egg, and an after-.
dinner coffee cup full of milk. Pet all
of this in a skillet, and place the skillet
on a very hot fire. If it gets too thick,
thin it with miik.. It will cook immedi-
ately, and should be removed from the
fire when of the consistency of batter.
We forgot to say, have your toasted -
bread all ready and hot, and dip each
piece in the rarebit while it is •hot.
Serve on a hot plate.

In the period froni 1786 to 1880 Mont
Blanc was climbed by 869 visitors, with-
out taking into accoririt guides, porters,
oi local ehasseurs. Of these only 49
ascended the mountain duting the first
68 years, .-between 1786 and 1.854; the.,
remaining 820 during the succeeding 26
years. The record of death down to
1880 included only 25 persons, seven of
whom were tourists. •

-It is the spirit of service ivhich
makes it noble or ignoble. No work
is dishonorable until you dishonor it.
I always disliked the fish they call the,
carp, and your carping worker is the
drudge yet further degraded. I do not
think that Jesus ever undervalued
honest toil, or that in his rebuke of
Martha he intended to call in question
the nobility of her devotion to domestic-
ity : but it was the disagreeable spirit
that she brought into the kitcheek hat
deserved critiersin.
-It is a nice thing to kno the close
relationship of cleanliness andi
but it is absurd to pot cleanliness so far;
ahead that cleanliness shall say }her
prayers to a broomstick. Women do,
vote too much time to the bill of fare
-1
they baby the men too. nsuch-get therre
too much to worshiping the dinner;
table. The head of the household should
have some time for real social life, Same
time to read and think, some time -to
frolic with the children (or are children
out of fashiou?)sornetirrie for the kcal' ob-
jects of living. Somewives really have no
time to 0 -et acquainted with their hus-
band; anCithat in part accounts for that
great modern evil, the club. I like women
who are fond of dornisticity ; but I do
not, believe in domesteca.ted women. I
like birds; but in cages they are abso-
lutely pitiful. -[Christian Union.
-Some women are too dornestie.
They -spend more time chasing a flyi than'
the, fly can understand. The fly hi -
self is a scavenoer, and yet she misc ne
eeives the usefbulness of this domestic
angel, and leaves her sink -spout' and
back yard in distress, to waste her
force on trifles. ,The great mistake rof
American women is domestic slavery.
We --the great middling classes, 1 men'
-don't know how to take comfort;
this country. I know hosts of women -
who worry and fret over the most trivial
duties, frittering away energy tat
should be devoted to loftier thi gs.
Some women are forever talking abput
their houses being Out of order, • ed
their spring or fall cleaning being et
undone, whose prayer -book is i rs.
Glass' Cook -Book, and whose "k0e-

ers, but the reverse, or servile houSe-
keeping is equally bad. 1

Cat rh-a New Treatment.
Perim s the most extraordinary succesii that
has bee achieved in modern _medicine has been
attained by the Dixon Treatment -for Catarrh.
Out of 2 000 patients treated during the. past six
months fully ninety per cent have been cured
of this s ubborn malady. This is none t e less
startling, when it is remembered that no 11 '"C per
cent. of patients presenting themselves o the
regular practitioner are benetitted, whi e the
patent 'medicines and other advertised cures
never record a cane at all. Starting wi h the
claiin nese generally believed by the most green-
tific men that the disease is due to the pr isence
of living parasites in the tissue, Mr. Di. on at
once adapted his cure to their extermina ion-
ehis accomplished, he claims the Catarrh i prae-
tically cured, and the permanency is unqu stion-
td; aseures effected by him four -years a ref are
cures still. No one else has ever atter% ted to
cure Catarrh in this manner, and no other treat
ment has ever cured Catarrh. The appli tion
of the remedy is simple, and can be d ne at
home, arid the present season of the year is the
most favorable for a speedy and pennanen cure,
the majority Of cases being :cured at one treat-
ment. Sufferers should correspond with assn.
