—On" of the most ex ensive dynami e
explosiOna ever known in the Ottaa a
Valley, took place at the Chats fal s
near Pontiac Village, on Wednesda
mornin$ of last week. The amount Of
dynamite used was 130 pounds, and it
was started with electricity. Five holes,
each five feet in depth and two inches in
diameter, were drilled with steam drills,
which were then filled with the explos-
ive, taking the amount stated. The ob-
ject in view was the removal of an ea-
teasivei and heavily censtructed coffer
dam, which was built for the purpose of
changing the water course in one of the
main chutes through elsich the greater
portioniof the extensive sawlog drive of
the Ottawa passes, while the channel
was being blasted out to facilitate the
passage of logs and timber for an future
time. ;The channel was blasted GO
ninety feet wide, and in some places ila
much ae seven feet in depthaof rock w s
removed. The work, although ' e.
pensive; costing in the !vicinity of $3
000, was necessary, as every fall tho
sands of valuable logs, which the swee
ers were powerless to remove, stuck ikn
this chennel and remained there unt 1
the folldwinn spring, when they were re-
moved by the high e4ter. The 'work
, is pronounced by competent judges to be
very good, and is said to be eminently
satisfactory to all the parties concerned.

Fun at Home.
Do tot be afraid of si, little fun at
home, Igood people. Do not shut up
your hause, lest the sun should fade
your carpets ; and yoer hearts, lest n
laugh should shake down a few of the
musty lold cobwebs that are hanging
there. ;Young people must havefun
and relaxation somewhere;'if they do
not find it at their own hearthstones
they will seek it at other and less pre-
fitable places. Therefore let the fide
barn brightly at night in winter, and
let the doors and windoiws be cheerfully
thrown, open in summer, and make the
hernestead delightful with all those litt e
arts parents so well understand. Ha f
an hour of merriment within doors, an
merriment of a home, blots out the r
membeince of many a care and antics -
ance Miring the day, and the best safe-
guard they can takewiththem into the
world is the unseen influences of the
bright, little home sanoturn.
