The Beef -Eaters of the: World.
If there.... were any soundness in the
Statistic a Of Mr. P.• S. Lamas-, who is
stated to be itu ecimontist of great repute,
and who.- is certaitly an industrious
conipiier of tigaree„ the English people
eat no. longer boast to be, or be jeered
at as being, thc greatest beef -eaters in
the world. According to the eco-namistss
computation, the annual consumption of
beef in Europe amounts to 45 pounds
per. head of the pepulation in a year.
The. Anatraliaus consume 150 pounds
ma,n, and the Americans 130 pounds,
while the other great continent of Argen-
tme(fettn. which Mr. Lamas_ hails) eats
level With Australia. At his rate there
must be a very great number -of people
in the world who get along iwithout eat-
ing beef at all. But the calculations
are based on one which is yet more ex-
traordinary—namely, that on the whole
globe the: total head of cattle is 47,500? -
000 or about an ox and a half for every
one in Great Britain,' Lindh:Ione at all
for anybody else.' Still, fats are factii
