....-grs. John Hintz, of Brodhagen,

. —It is said that the glacier of Ala ka
is wain at the rate of a quarter 4f a
mile per annum toward the sea. ' he
front presents a wall of ice some ve
hundred feet, in thickneSS ; its breadth
varies from three to ten miles, and it is
about 150 • miles long. Almost every
peer of an hour hundreds of tons of
jet, in large blocks, fall into the sea,
which they agitate in the most violent
manner,:the waves being such as to toss
1
about the largest vessels that appro ch
the glacier as if they were small bo ts.
—The old saw that "there is noth ng
new under the sun" is being exempli-
fied, says the Pall Mall Gazette. • Ages
ago, upon the banks of the Nile, some
. of the recusant Egyptians who did not
.1join with their compatriots in reverence
ifor the gentle crocodile, slew the playful
'• creature, and utilized its skin for cover-
' jogs for their rolls of papyri. NOw, -

_On Tuesday, Mrs. Wallace, 14
. Agnes street, Toronto, was found br
, some neighbors lying on her bed surfer-
• ing from severe wounds on the face,
fromwhiell blood was Rowing freely.
She declined to name her assailant, but
her hushend, who was in the room; was
arrested by a couple of constables on
anspielon. On appearing before Police
Magistrate Denison, she admitted that
her husbatel had assaulted her in a
drunken tit, 'but said she did not wish
to proheeute, as he had never molested
her before. The Magistrate stated that
. the Governor-General alone had power
to pardon. her husband, and that the
case must go on.
—A horrible accident, resulting fatal-
ly, occurred about 10 o'clock Monday
morning in the wholesale warehouse of
Boyd Bros., Toronto. Mrs. Kelly, over
80 years of age, visited the warehouse to
make a few pii.rehaSee, and was, as
usual, permitted to use the hoist to reach
the top storey. Shortly afterwards the
hoist was found feest at one of .the in r -
mediate flats with the old lady's had
jammed between the platform and one of
the projections. in the elevator shaft.
Her head was terribly injured, the whole
right side of -the skull being crushed in
and the brain protracting. She was con-
veyed to the hospital, where she died in.

able property in the city.-

Commander Gordon, R. N., returne to
Halifax Sunday afternoon, after an ab-
sence of nearly faur months. Resp „et-

a a
. Commander Gordan 'expressed the same
opinion held by laim on his return kola
• last year's expedition. He regards the
straits as navigable under certain risks,
early in the sea, sese, from the beginning
of July to the end of., Oetober, a,ud the
-period might be extended half a month
more. The risks to be encountered are
at the opening of the season when we is
. to be met, but theserisks' are not gave
: ones, and the straits may be reasonably
. considered as navigable for the full four
, months stated.
• —A few days ago, William Cul ert
wai charged before magistrates Jos ph
_ Barker and A. Mateolta, of Kitimat ne,
• with having ill treated a horse beton rig
to Thos. Johnston, the -animal dyin a
day or two after heieg returned to the
• gable. The evidence went to +ow that
the horse had been overdriven between
Kincardine and Walkerton. At the
latter place the horse was so used up
that a veterinary was called. Callpert
said that he owned the horse, and that
•it had been foundered setae time before.
• The case was made out, and decision re-
served by the magistrates. In the mean-
time, Culbert had agreed to pays $70 to
Mr. Johnston in settlement. A fine of $1
and $15.25 costs has since been fixed by
the magistrates. .
—On the 1st October, James Mauro
was gathered to his eternal rest, at 1the
homestead, lot 4, north line, Kincardine
township, aged Oglity years. Deceased
emigrated from eleddiertandshire, Scot-
land, about forty years ago, and shortly
after brought his family to the neighbor-
hood of Kincardine. He was a man
possessed of many good d qualities and
during his long IImfe merited and held, the
respect of all hie neighbors and acquain-
- tanees. For th past two years he Was
unable to move `about to any extent, Suf-
fering from th t etfeet of a fall froin a
scaffolding in his barn. His wife died
about eight years ago. He leaves a
family of tive —John, who reddes on:the
homestead, Murdoch, living inTetrolea,
Mrs. Dr. Ross, of Kincardine, Mrs.
Capt. Dancey, of Goderich, and Mrs.
McLeod, of Saginaw. The remains of
- deceased were interred in theKincirdine
cemetery an Saturday last.
A MInistor's Wit.
The phraseology of the Rev. Charles

speech, at one appealed to his heaters,
