—There are now published in the
united States 14,160 newspapers and
periodicals of all classes. Among them
are 760 religious and denominational
newspapers, nearly one-third of which
are printed in Philadelphia, New York,
Boston and Chicago.

—A French geologist has called at-
tention to the effect gravitation has in
heaping up sea waters upon the land.
The continents are thus all situated at
the tops of hills of water; and in cross-
ing the Atlantic the ship has first to go
down hill, then to tross a valley, and
finally to climb another hill. The cal-
culation, has been made that in mid. -
ocean the surface may be more than half
amile (I,000 meters) below the level it
would have if the continents exerted no
attraction.
—Concerning the Unitarian the Rev.
Wm. B. Greene, of West Brookfield,
this story is told. A man died in the
neighborhood, and, the reverend Colonel
was called. apon to officiate at the funer-
al. Some time afterward, on inquiring
why he was summoned to the funeral of
a man not of his flock, he was told:
"Mr. — did not believe in much of
anything, and we thought your belief
came the nearest to nothing of any-
body's, so we sent for you I"
—A sum of ±',20 is offered by the Brit-.
ishiDairyFarmers' Association to provide
a scholarship to be corlipetecl for by dairy
fanners, or persons intending to start
upon the business of dairy farming or
dairying. The successful candidate will
be required to devote at least two months
to the acquisition of knowledge of but-
seranaking in Normandy, and to keep a
iournal of his experience during the
whole period of his scholarship, sending
a copy of it weekly to the British Dairy
Farmers' Association.
—.As an illustration of the trivial
causes width sometimes bring abont a
severance of the pastoral relation, the-
" Presbyterian Banner" tells of a pastor
who had to resign his charge because
the superintendent objected to his using -
a plum -colored silk handkerchief in the
pulpit, and the "Herald and.Presbyter"
mentions another good Alan to whomob-
jection was made because of his wear-
ing of an unbeccAing mustache and the
practice of rolling up his trousers in wet
weather.—Hartford Religious Herald.
—A lady and gentleman went out for
a row off the Isleof Jersey. The •latter
dropped his oars in the water, and
swam after them; but when he had re-
covered them the boat.had been drifted
by the tide beyond his power to reach
it. He reached the shore, however, and
told his story. -It was disbelieved, and
he wss arrested and indicted kor murder.
Meanwhile the lady drifted for forty
hours and was then picked up by a
vessel bound for St. Johns, Newfound-
land, whence a telegrani from her re-
leased her friend from imprisonment.
—The bed of the ocean is to an enor-
mous extent covered with lava and pum-
ice stone. Still more remarkable is it
to find the floor of the ocean covered in
many siarts with the metearites. These
are like minature cornets, and are for
the most part broken into innumerable
fragments. We are all familiar = with
the heavenly visitants as shooting stars,
but it has been only lately discovered
that this cosmic dust forms layers at
the bottom of the deepest seas. Be-
tween Horealidu and Tahati, at the
depth of 2,350 fathorns—over two miles
and a half—a vast layer of this material
exists. Falling upon land this impal-
pable dust is undistinguisha.ble ; but
accumulating for centuries in the sea
depths it forms a wonderous story of
continuous bombardment of this planet
- by cometary bodies.

The "Christian Mirror" says that a
Portland minister tells the following
story: Once on a time, being in a
Southern city on the Sabbath, he wish-
ed to attend service in. a " Free -Will"
Baptist church, where a distinguished
divine was to preach. Passing along the
street, in quest of the chureh, he asked
a venerable darkey whom he met, point-

that?" pointing to another. "Dat is de

Ayer's Cherry Pectoral,
Catarrh—a New Treatment.
Perhaps the most extriordinary success that
has been achieved in modern medicine has been
attained by the Dixon Treatment for Catarrh.
Out of 2,000 patients treated during the past six
months, fully ninety per cent, have been cured
of this stubborn malady. This is none the less
starelinnewhen it is remembered that no five per
cent. oi patients presenting themselves to the
regular practitioner are benefitted, while the
patent medicines and other advertised cures
never record a cute nt all. Starting with the
claim now generally believed by the most scien-
tific men that the disease is due to the presence
of living- parasites ii the tissue, Mr. Dixon at
once adapted his cure to their extermination—
chis accomplished, he claims the Catarrh is prac-
tically cured, and the permanency is unquestion-
td, as cures effected by hint four years ago are
cures still. No one else has ever attempted to
cure Catarrh in this manner, and no other treat
ment has ever cured Catarrh. The application
of the remedy is sauple, and -can be done at
home, and the present season of the year is the
most favorable for a speedy and permanent cure,
the majority of cases being cured at one treat-
ment. Sufferers should correspond with Messrs.
A. H. DIXON & SON, 305 King Street, West,
Toronto, Canada, and enclose stamp for their
treatise on Catarrh.—Montreal Star, November
