THE HURON EXPOSITOR. 7 The Abuse of Silence. A man and wife enjoying it walk to- gether, or a tete-a-tete sweetened by confidential and affectionate conl'rersa- tion is a, sight beautiful before God and man. But too often the picture is re- versed. Ile saunters out with her, care- less and uninterested, scarcely, during the walk, uttering a word. Is not this to say the least, a great abuse of the science of silence? In the houyof absence and of solitude, the husband is impressed with a, sense of the amiable disposition and demeanor of his wife, of her unwearied endeavors to promote and perpetuate his happiness, and of its being his bounden duty to show, by the most unequivocal expres- sions of attachment and. of tenderness, his full approbation of her assiduity and faithfulness. But too often these ex- pressions of approbation are not forth- coming, aud, with a mistaken silence he AHAB from honoring his wife, and expresses those few words of praise which she so well deserves and would se greatly appreciate. " deserves, master is c all very well," said the dog, "but I wish he had a tail to wag when he is pleased." - - “In politics," said Cavour, "nothing is so absurd as railcar." In the same way we may say that nothing is so ab- surd in matrimony as sullen silence. Reynolds, in his Life and Times," tells of a free and easy person who passed three festive clays at the seat of the Marquis and Marchioness of--, with- out. any invitation, iconvinced (as prov- ed to be the case), that, my lord and my ladynot being cm speaking terms, each would suppose the other had asked him. A soft answer turns away Wrath, and When a wife or a husband is irritat- ed, there is nothing like letting a sub- ject drop. Then silence is indeed gold- en. But the silence persisted in is an instrument of deadly torture. "A wise man by his words maketh himself be- loved.' To this might be added that an certain occasion, a fool by his ob- stinate silence maketh himself hated. "According to Milton, `, Eve kept silence in Eden to he her husband talk,' "said a. gentleman to a, ladyfriend, and then added in a melancholy tone, "Alas! there have been no Eves since." "Because,," quickly retorted the lady, "there have been no husbands worth listening to." Certainly there are too few men who exert themselves to be as agreeable to their wives (their best friends) as they are to the comparative strangers or secret enemies whom they meet at clubs or other places of resort. And yet, if it is true that, "to be agree- able in our family circle is not only a positive duty, but an absolute moral- ity," then every husband and wife should say on their wedding day- -"To balls and routs for fame let others roam, Be mine the happier lot to please at home." There is a time to speak as well as a time to be silent, and the best time of all for pleasant conversation is the time of meals. We should have at least three laughs during dinner, and every- one is bound to contribute a share of agreeable table talk, good humor, and cheerfulness. Even from a physiological point of view, "Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, (which will show itself in dispelling sullen silence) than a stalled ox, and hatred therewith."--. The Quiver for June. . - A Common -Tragedy. Christmas morning, one of the police courts in New York witnessed an unusual scene. A young woman, miserably clad,. pale and thin, came before the Judge, leading by the hand a pinched, hungry - looking little airl of four years. The mother, with ttrernblireg lips asked to have her little girl sent to some charit- able institution, because she could not support herself and the child. While she was -waiting for the uecessary papers to be made ont, she clung to the baby, kissing it again, while tears dropped on the face a,nd hair of the little one, to whom the whole scene was a mystery,. Suddenly an elderly gentleman came tothe court-reom, gazed eagerly about, fastened a searching look on the face of the young mother, who was entirely ab- sorbed in her grief. A sharp cry.,,," My and, my child, but how changed ! ' and he clasped the mother in his arms. Atter a time, in the Judge's room, the story was told; it is not new, and with- out doubt will be repeated again and again in other lives. Five years ago, the young = woman was a much -loved daughter in a home that was more - thrall oomfortable. She insisted on receiving attentions from a young man to -whom her parents objected because he drank to excess. The daughter refused to listen to advice, and when extreme measures were resorted to by the pa- rents, and the young man forbidden to visit her home, she met him outside of her home, and at last eloped with him, believing that hi a love for -her would lead him to resist temptation. In one month he came to the poor home he was able to provide, so drunk that other people were called to assist him to his room; this was the beginning bf a debauch that led to his discharge from a = good situ- atinn, and he was -unable to obtain an- other, finally he deserted his wife, who for a time supported herself by working in an East Side factory. After her child was born she was forced to take sewing at home, and learned to know, only, too ‘el.1, what hunger and cold meant. TW he day before Christmas, penniless and homeless, she went through the streets of New York, and -after night fall began begging, passedthe night in " a station -house, and in the morning de- cided to part with her child to save it from suffering. Au these years a man and woman prematurely old had been looking for their wayward child, Of whom no trace eould be found, until by accident she was recognized by an old friend, who followeeher to the police court, and then notified the father, who gladly took his child and grandchild to the now motherless home.. . This sad story, with its blessed and yet pathetia ending, carries its own moral. She must be dull • indeed who needs to have this moral drawa. Consul Griffin, of Sydney, has made some exhaustive studies of the inhabitants of New Britain, an island pa the Scnith Pacific ocean. This custom is peculiar to that island, and is without parallel among the other inhabitants of the South sea. Got More Than A Fair Show -"I see," said she, looking up from the paper, "that there were twenty million buttons mad in this country last year." " Inde d !" he replied, "1 wonder what the were made for?" "For sewing on garments, of course." " Well somebody's got more than their share, I guess, for there hain't been any sewed on my garments for a year. She resumed her reading, and a deep silence fell upon the household. Catarrh -a New Treat ent. Perhaps the most extraordinary s ccess that has been achieved in modern medicine has been attained by the Dixon Treatment for Catarrh. Out of 2,000 patients treated during the past six months, fully ninety per cent, have been cured of this stubborn malady. This is none the less startling when it is remembered that no five per cent. of patients presenting themselves to the regular practitioner are benefitted while the patent medicines and other advertised cures never record a cure at all. Starting with the claim now generally believed by the most scien- title men that the disease is due to ,the presence of living parasites in the tissue, Mr. Dixon at once adapted his cure to their extennination- ehis accomplished, he claims the Catarrh is prac- tically cured, and the permanency is unquestion- td, as cures effected by him four years ago are cures still. No one else has ever attempted to cure Catarrh in this manner, and no other treat ment has ever cured Catarrh. The application. of the remedy is simple, and can be done at home, and the present season of the year is the most favorable for a speedy and permanent cure, the majority of cases being cured at one treat- ment.Sufferers should correspond with Messrs, A.
