—Quail, once so plentiful in Illinois,.
. have become very scarce, and Illinois
farmers, who recognize their value as in-
sect destroyers, are making arrange-
ments to stock their farms with Tennes-
see birds.
—.Thos. Stevens, who started- last
spring from California on his trip around
the world On a bicycle, has reached
Teheran, where he spent the winter, and
will shortly leave for Calcutta. Thence
he goes to China., and, after spending
some tune in wheeling in Japan, will
stake a steamer for California.. The trip
is such as has never before been attempt-
ed. .
—A party of 87 boys from Dr. Bar-
eardo's Home, at Stepney, England,
arrived at the immigrant sheds Tor-
onto two weeks ago under the care
of ma. Alfred Owen. The party num-
bered 190 on leaving Londoa, but was
reduced by the number • placed on
the way to Toronto, and those left at
the branch home at Peterborough.
The bears have been in Barnardo's
Home for sixteen months, where they
have all been taught some trade., The
lads t are nearly all -English, and
were quite healthy -looking. ,
_A young woman, the wit -tow of a
respectable mechanic who met his death
by accidental drowning in March, writes
to the St. Marys Journal requesting
correspondence from, reapectable persons%
with a view to the adoption of her infant
son, aged eight months. The /writer
states that as she hasto work for a liv-
ing, she would be hap-
py to meet with
respectable persons who would,' adopt
the child as their own, and in this con-
nection requests that letters may:be ad-
dressed, to Mrs. K, care of the journal
office. St. Marys. • I
—When the bra.ve Corporal Caithness
was asked, after Waterloo, if he was not
afraid, he replied--" Afraid l why, I
was in all the battles of the Peninsula !"
arid having it explained that the ques-
tion merely referred to a fear of losing
the day, he said" Na, na, I didn't fear
that, I was anly afraid we should all be
killed before We had time to Win
—The Mitchell Advecate of last week
has the following; On Saturday last a
young tad, aged about 15 years, named
John Morrow, met with his death by
being drowned in the river Avon. • He
went over in the forenoon to the house
of Mr. Alex. Brown and borrowed an
axe. Returning home he went, on to
the ice, and white standing on a small
piece that VI,'`a.'s floating he tell backward
into the water, and never came to the
surface., His body was recovered at
about 5 o'clock in the afternoon. His
parents are sorely grieved, and they
have the deep sympathy of the corn-
! '
munity. .
—Mr. Osborne is very economical, but
at the same time a very irascible parent.
Last Sunday .his boy, Tommy, deliber-
ately disobeyed his father, whereupon
the latter seized his offspring, threw him
over his knee, and proce.eded to rebuke
him in his usual energetic manner
with the palm of his hand. Tommy,
who is something of a strategist in a
small way, thinking to gain tiie, ex-
chtimed—" Pa., remember I've ot my
Sunday clothes on. 'fort will ruin
them." "That's a fact," responded
Osborne, releasing the youth. ! " You
can take them off while I go into the
garden and cut a dozen or so of birch
switches."
—I recall a story of a Scottish' driver
of pigs wile was led on by a tVaggish
Englishman to talk of birnsdf. I At last
it was boldly stated by the wicked fel-
low that the driver was in fact a.greater
man than the Duke of Wellington. The
stupid lout scratched his thick head,
and, with a, satisfied expression replied :
"Aweel, Wellington was a great maim,
and verve smart in his own way, but I
doot if he could ha' driven seven hint-
dred.pigs fra,' Edinboro' to London, and
not lose one, as I ha' done."
The Household.
Photograph Cases.—A pretty case for
cabinet photographs, preferred by many
to an album, is made of plush la any
desired color. 'Nine inches by twenty-
six are about the,. right dimensions.
That is, have an oblong piece as wide as
the cabinet, as taii, and about three
inches more than three times the width _
of the picture. Line with satin Or silk,
wadded a little, with a little satchet
powder on the wadding, edge with a silk
cord with ends to tie around the case,
after it has been folded twice across, so
as to make a receptacle shaped something
like an en elope
The Breakfast Table.—Put under the
damask cloth upon the table a thick
sab-eaver a thick canton flannel,. if you
cannot afford the hdavier " table felt"
sold for this purpose. Or an old blank-
et, darned, washed, and kept for this
use only will answer the purpose, The
upper cover will lie -more smoothly, look
like a Much better quality of drapery,
and keep leau a third, longer ;than if
spread over the bare, table top. Have
mats of some kind, spun glass; basket-
work, or crochet, under the ' dishes.
Besides these, have a knife and fork laid
straight upon either side of the plate an
individual butter plate and salt cellar
for each person, With fancy cut glass,
silver or gilt battles for the two kinds of
pepper used at table. Castors are a
thing of the past, and are never, used
new, a.servaait hemline the condiMent
needed when requested°, salt and pepper
alone being placed upon the table.
For the Ladies.—The fertile brain of
woman can devise so many ways and
means to improve her personal appear-
ance at small expense and labor, that for
her own self-respect and esteem she
ought to feel in duty bound to make her-
self as neat and attractive as poisible at
all times. A simple morning dress can
be made in milliner of percale, gingham
or batiste, with snowy linen cellar and
ribbon tied at the neck to look neat and
suitsble for ordinary wear, aini not be
too elaborate to see to the daily duties -
that so many housekeepers find incum-
bent upon them, while a more dainty
robe can be made of white India mull
or cainbric,' that is always new and be-
coming when freshly laundered. In -
winter, cashmere ar some of 'the many
wool goods always to be found, can be •
made survieeithic if dark chintz or sateen
is considered too amino if place, .
The Dining Table.— For a. dining -
room table, says the Decorator and
Furnisher, nettling is handsorner than
deep crimson cloth with a heavy' border- -
/rig of dead gold iinialiad by a. ,conven-
ef deep -toned color, and • gives a look
• of importance and substantiility to the
cloth.
• Sausage Meat.—To make sausage keep
its shape in flat cakes, after making them
the size you wish, dip them into flour;
this will effectually prevent their falling
apart.
Holloway's Pills .
Health or Wealth.—No sane person would
hesitate an instant in the choice between these
two conditions. Now is the season to secure the
*former either by restoring or confirming it.
These Pills expel all impurities from the system
which fogs, foul vapors, and variable tempera-
tures engender during winter; this medicine
also acts most wholesomely upon the skin by
disgorging the liver of its accumulated bile, and
by exciting the kidneysto more energetic action;
it increases the appetite for food and strengthens
the digestive process. The stomach and liver,
with which most disorders originate, are fully
under the control of these regenerative Pills,
which act very- kindly yet moie efficiently on the
tenderest bowels. 912.52w.

A Successful Result.
Master Frank Hendry, writing from Seaforth,
says: "I purchased one bottle of Burdock Blood
Bitters to purify my blood. It did purify it, and
now I have excellent health." As a blood puri-
fying tonic and systeiu reaulastor the result of

A Valuable Featuie.
One of the most valuable features of Hagyard's
Yellow Oil is that unlike ordinary liniments it
can be safely and effectually taken internally as
well as applied in cases of pains, inflammation,
sore throat, rheumatism, and all painful com-
plaints and injuries. 857.52.2w.

The Lost Restored."I-
Ira McNeill, of Poplar Hill, Ont., states that
his- brother aged 32 was afflicted with a terrible
cold, from the effects of which he lost his voice.
Hagyard's. Pectoral Balsam cured the cold and
restored his voice in the most perfect manner.
He says it cannot be exceeded-asa remedy for
coughs and colds. 857.52.2w. .
To Whom It May Concern.
Geo. W. Platt, of Pieton, says he can confi-
dently recommend Burdock Bleod Bitters to any
who suffer from...loss of appetite, constipation
and general debility, that remedy having cured
him, after severe illness from the same com-
plaints. 857.52.2w.
