Great Milk Records,
The wonderful development in dairy
records as shown in the products of
Jersey cows has led an admirer s`nd be-
liever in Holstein -Friesian cows, 'Mr. J.
Shallcross, jr., to present the merits
of this breed in an elaborate communi-
cation to the Indiana Farmer: In this
is found compiled a very complete` record'
of the Holstein -Friesians, as they; hence-
forth are to be called, arid which, from
its complete character, will be v luable
for reference, as showing yields for
various periods :
It is stated that the pasturage, season.
in Holland extends from the 1st of May
to the 1st of November, during ' which
no grain of any kind is fed, and that the
ems average twenty Dutch cans, or
about twenty-eight quarts, per day for
- the entire period. It is the habit of
many American breeders to weigh the
milk of their animals daily, and the
published statements of the performance
of their herds demonstrate that as deep
and persistent milkers the Holsteins are
away and beyond any other breed, of
whatever name and wherever found.
In the run of dairies she is considered
an extra COW that gives 5,000 pounds of
rdilk in a year, yet here come Holstein
breeders placing the average of their en-
tire herds at 15,000 and 16,000 pounds.
In one herd the records show the aver-
age of the 2 year olds for one year to
have been 10,220 pounds ; in another
11,310 pounds. As to the individual
animals Echo, heads the list with 23,-
7754, pounds for twelve months 'in her
11th year ; Princess of Wayne follows
with 20,469 9-16 pounds ; Empress next
—a 13 year old and a cripple—with
19,7141 pounds ; , then Violet t scores
18,.677i pounds," and Lady DeVries
1S,8488 : pounds ; Aaggie has I given
18,004 15-16 pounds, and her daughter,
Aaggie 'dud,as a 2 year old, 17,746 2-16
pounds; and we have Jamaica with a
year aid test of 10,546 15-16 pounds, and
her stable companion, Ethelka, with
18,131 j pounds to her credit.
In relation to daily yields, Jamacia,
jnst`mentioned, wears the palm, having
yielded in 24 hours 112 pounds and 2
ounces, surpassing Ethelka, who has
given 101 pounds; Shadeland Maud, 2
year old record, 62? pounds ; Princess
of Wayne, as a 2 year old, 57 pounds,
and as a 5 year old, 80 pounds ; Chau-
tauqua Girl, 85 pounds. ; Echo, 83
pound*; Rhoda, 89 • pounds ; Aaggie,
841 pounds ; <-Egis,. 82.1 pounds ;' Mink,
91 :pounds; Brilliant, 80 pounds ; Jo-
hanna, 88 pounds ; Undine, 901 pounds ;.
Empress, 181 pounds ; Jennie 1. 2nd,
86; pounds ; Jantje, 90?: pounds ; Jam
erinia, 82:1° podinds ; Chalange Favorite,
84 pounds ; Mercedes, 88 pounds ;
Pierkje, 76 pounds; Ytje 2nd, 3 years
old, 50 pounds ; Aaggie Rosa, 91 pounds
in 24 hours.
Again, the aggregated yields for one
day of six herds show an average per
head of 77 5-16 pounds for matured
cows; 69 6-16 pounds for 4 year olds ;
5410-I6 pounds for year olds ; '45 4-16
pounds for 2 year olds, and a ,general
average of 56 I0-16 pounds for all ages.
A remarkable feature of this :general
average is that seven -tenths of the ani-
mals were 2 and 3 year olds, -
w
Driving at Night. ,
How to illuminate a road in front of
the horses in driving at night is an im-
portant matter.
G
The usual side lamps on carriages, or
the attaching of a lantern to the dash
board, fail to reflect the light where it is
most wanted, and the suspending of _a
lanternto the front axle is objectionable
for many reasons, but it is . the best plan
for shedding the light where it ' is most
needed, that we have seen tried.
Bat a Philadelphia physician suggests -
the attaching of the lantern to the breast
collar of the harness, which he says he
has tried with perfect satisfaction and
he has evidently had some experience
with the -ordinary methods of lighting,
for he says the various forms of dash
• lights are pretty much the same, in that
they put the light just where it is not
wanted, illuminating the horse's tail
and hips, and the buggy thrills with a
brilliance quite unnecessary, which- in-
tensifies the blackness of the shadow cast
by thein just where one most Wishes to
see clearly.
"My light is a common tubular lan-
tern, with a reflector, and a spring for
attachment to the dash. In place of
putting it els the dash, I slipped the
spring over the middle of. the breast
collar, directly in front of the horse.
Every part of the road in front of me
was plainly seen, se I could drive with
as much confidence as in broad daylight.
The conditions necessary for success are
a level headed horse, with fair breadth
of attest, and a shoulder strap attached
to the cheek hook, to prevent the lantern
sagging down between the horse's legs,
when for any reason the traces slack. It
would be well to have a short satrap sew-
ed to the inside of the breast (filar, to
oa
slip the spring through, so as tprevent
any lateral motion.
Proud of His Sister.
The Chicago Tribune relates the case
.of a young man who was regarded as a
phenomenon, because he took his sister
to all the best entertainments, and actu-
ally devoted hi:nasel o her during the
Lecture and opera_;sc ason. Being praised
for his unusual attention to his sister,
the young man promptly and proudly
replied :
"No, there's nothing wonderful or ex-
traordinary about it. She is the only
woman I know in whom I have the most
thorough confidence. She is always the
same, always pleasant and affectionate,
and to tell you the candid truth, I am
afraid she'll go and marry some of these
imitation men around here, and be un
happy all her life.
She has nobody else to look to, and
I'll take ea -re she does not have to look
to anybody else. - I suppose some day a
genuine man will conte along. If he's a
genuine pian, I won't object. Until he
does come, she's good enough for me,
and if I ever find as good a girl, I'll
marry her."
The example is most commendable. A
young man would do well to seek his
sister's society until he finds another
lady as good as his sister. The Sin of Cantankerousness.
General cantankerousness is an offence
a. thousand -fold more injurious to the
church than- any _-isolated ease of sin of
any kind can possibly be. A man may
at least be a negatively good man until
he commits some isolated act that merits
expulsion. . If he has done no good he
Inay at least have done no- harm. But
the worst feature of the cantai kerous
man's sin usually consists in the fact
that for years and years lie has been a
nuisance, He has interfered with every
worker, and done little or nothing, and'
paid little or nothing himself. There is
no offence, no sin, .no crime that does
more harm to the church than general,
long -continued cantan_kerousneaa.—Can-.

To Cure a Corn.
There is no lack of so-called cures for the com-
mon ailment known . as corns. The vegetable,
annual, and mineral kingdoms have been ran•
sacked for cures. It is a simple matter to re-
move corns without pain, for if you -will go to
any druggist or medicine dealer and buy a bottle
of Putnatu's painless Corn Extractor and ap
it as directed the thing is done. .Get Putnan

A Valuable Find.
Jaime Alex. Sproul, of Orangeville, says he

with which he was long . suffering. He declares

. Hamilton Dowd, writing from Burns, Ont.,
says he was afflicted with chilblains which were
very sore and painful and which nothing relieved
until he tried Hagyard's Yellow Oil ; less than
one bottle cured him. 857.5.2.2w.

Near Starvation's Door..'
" Mrs. Nelson W. Whitehead, of Nixon, wee a
chronic sufferer from dyspepsia and liver ce n -
plaint, and was scarcely able to take the_ mast
simple nourishment. Even a swallow of water
caused great distress. Two bottles of Burdock
Blood Bitters cured .her, when all else failed!
She heartily recommends this ,remedy to all suf-
ferers. 857.52.2w.
A Wide -Range.
A wide range.of painful affections may be met
with Hagyard's Yellow Oil: Jas. M. Lawson., of
Woodville, Ont., speaks of it in high terms for
rheumatism, lanae hack, sprains, and many pain= -
-ful complaints too numerous too mention. It is
used iuternally or externally.. 857.52.2w.
- Whoop it Up.
Probably one of the -most difficult complaints
to doctors is whooping.cough. When treated by
ordinary means the poor victim is left to whoop
it up as best he can. Hagyard's Pectoral Balsam
gives relief in this as well as in all throat, bron-
chial, and lung troubles. 857.52.2w.
Worth Remembering. -
In a long letter from John H. Hall, of Baddick,
Cape Breton, N. S. he says : 1'1 believe were it
not for Burdock Blood Bitters:I should be in my.
grave." It cured Inc of kidney and liver com-
plaint and general debility, which had nearly
proved' fatal. 857.52.2w. - ; .
