of about 40 feet, and hurled herself
down to the base of the rock. She
.struck on her head and left side, sustain-
ina injuries from which she died in less
thqn twenty minutes.
-The 134th anniversary of Washing-
ton's birthday was celebrated as a
national holiday at Washington, the
departments, schools, banks and courts
being closed, and there being a partial
suspension of business. A national sal-
ute was fired at sunrise by the regular
army batteries, and at noon national
airs were rendered on the church
chimes. A local military company ;in
the uniform of the continental arthy
made a trip to Washington's tomb at
Mount Vernon, accompanied by nearly
100 members of Congress. The tomb
was -decorated with flowers and speeches
were delivered by ('oramissioner 131ack
silence), ill -wind that blows no good,"
" wild-goose chase," " scare -crow,"
" luggage " "row of pins" (as a mark of
value), • viva voce," "give and take,"
" sold " (in the way of a joke), "your
cake is dough." The girl who playfully
ca.Us some youth a " milksop" is also
unconsciously quoting Shakespeare, and
even "logger -head "is of the same origin.
"Extempore" is first found in Shakes7
peare, and so are ." almanacs." The
"elm and vine" (as a figure) may also
be mentioned. Shakespeare is the first
author that speaks of "the man in the
moon," or mentions the potato,.or uses
the term " eyesore " for annoyance.
Another often -quoted utterance may be
here mentioned, simply because it is
generally misunderstood: "One touch
of nature makes the whole world kin,"
which is snpposed to express the power
of sympathy, whereas it solely referred
to tne wide -spread operation of selfish-
ness.
Love -Making in Japan.
In houses wherein reside one or more
,daughters of °a marriageable age, an
empty flower -pot of art ornamental char-
acter, is encircled by a ring and suspend-
ed from the window or verandah by
three light chains. Now the Juliets of
Japan are, of course attractive, and their
Romeos as anxious as those of other
lands. But instead of serenades by
moonlight, and other delicate ways of
making an impression, it is etiquette for
the Japanese lover to approach the
dwelling of his lady bearing some choice
plant in his hand. „This takes place at
a time when he is fully assured that both
mother and daughter are at home, and I
need scarcely say that neith0 of them is
at all conscious that tlie young man is
taking such a liberty with -the flower -pot
outside of their window. It is believed
that a young lover so eegaged has never
been seen by his lady or her mamma in
this act of sacrilege -at any rate, my
friend tells me that dnring his long re-
sidence in Japan he neer heard of one
being caught in the ac -
t, or being inter
ferecl with in any way. The fact is,
this act of placing a pretty plant into
the empty flower -pot is equivalent to a
proposal to the young lady who dwells
within, and the Eastern fashion is, as I
think, a delicate and most harmless way
of proposing .to a lady. The youthful
gardener, having settled his plant to his
mind, retires, and the lady is free to act
as she pleases. If he is the right man
she takes every care of .his gift, waters
it, tends it carefully with her own hands
that all the world may see, In a word,
that the d6nor is an accepted suitor.
But if he is not a favourite, or if stern
parents object, the poor plant is torn
from the vase, and the next morning lies
limp and withered on the verandah or on
the path below.-Hoine Journal.
-The amount of cheese manufactured
at the Newry factory last year was
124,930 Zs., amounting to $10,368.85,
being an average of 08.29-100 cts. per lb.
-Mr. Archibald C-abson, of Fullarton,
has bought Mr. James Watt's "Haddo"
entire colt, for $500. Mr. Gibson in-
tends taking him over tb the States.
-Mr. J. B. Gough, the worldTenown-
ed temperance lecturer, died oni Thurs-
day rmo;ning last week, in Philadelphia.
He was born in Sandgate, Kent, Eng-
land, in 1817, and was in the 69th year
of his age. Although dissipated in early
life, after signing the pledge and re-
nouncing his former excesses, which he
did. in 1842, he became a staunch and
untiring advocate of temperance. He
was a thoroughly devout, Ghristianly,
good man, who had no wish, as some
appear to have, to make himself a hero
even when sketching _his own degrada-
tion or telling how far he had sunk and
how reckless he had become. He ha.s
died full of years though not a very old
man, and leaves another striking illus-
tration of what may be accomplished by -
8071e men in spite of the most unpropiti-

Holloway's Ointment and Pills.
As spring approaches a most favorable oppor-
tunity offers for rectifying irregularities, remov-
ang impurities, and erasing blemishes which have
ansen from the presence of matters forbade by
winter from being transpired through the pores.
This searching Ointment, well rubbed upon the
skin, penetrates to the deeply -seated organs,
upon which it exerts a most wholesome and
beneficial influence. Well nigh all the indiges-
tions give away to this simple treatment, aided
by purifying. and aperitive doses of Holloway's
I'ills, round each box of which plain instructions
are folded. Bilious diserders, loss of appetite,
fulness after eating, lassitude gout and rheuma-
tism may be effectively checked in their painful
progress, and the seeds of long suffering eradi-
cated by these remedies. 912.62w.
In Good Repute.
James Mcalurdoch, writing.flom Kinsale, says:
" Burdock Blood Bitters as a remedy for diseases
of the blood, liver and kidneys, has an excellent
reputation in this locality. I have used it, and ;
speak from experience as well as observation. It 1
is the only medicine I want, and I advise others
afflicted to try it." 857.52.2w. -

Every household should keep some ready

Shakesperian Slang.
The power of Shakespeare' over the
public is shown by the extent to which
his phrases, and, even his slang, have
become incorporated into our language.
In this point, indeed, he is unequalled.

"dead as a door nail,- "proud of one's
humility," hit or mise," love is blind,"
"selling for a sang," "wide world,"
" cut copies," fast , and loose,' Un-

There is no one aeinedy offered to suffering
humanity whose use is SO universally and fre-
quently required as Hagyard's Yellow Oil for
rheumatism, neuralgia, colds, sore throat, deaf-

soreness of of all kinds, when internally and ex-
