THE HURON.EXPOSITORS 4 ts, - The Near -Sighted Redbird. Last summer there dweltin the ravine .below my window a lusty young red- bird. His plumage was of the gayesi, his voice a promising baritone, and his manners- jaunty to the verge of, sel - conceit. But he had one affliction, hle was very near-sighted. And this firmity led hint one dayinto a verly awkward predicament, as will present' appear. - His favorite paradeground.was a ce tain bough of a ragged old locust at t e head of the ravine. Every morning, rj a regular time, he would take his p eition there, and gism an impromptu co cert. He would rum the scale, regul r and chromatic, through all keys, pra tice impossible exercises, and otherwi,e put himself in training for the operat c career to which he manifestly felt hi self destined. One morning he had just taken his a customed perch, and cleared his thro t by a series of vocal handsprings up an down the scate, when he heard a wit' ring sound dose at hand, and, lookin round, saw that. i 'another bird ha alighted on the same tree --his 'own pa ticular locust --not; ten feet away. Owing to thatT unfortunate nea sightedness of which I have spoken, h couldn't be quite sure just what kind o a bird it was, but he appeared to be common sort of fellow, of a dingy brow At first the redbird was indignant tha anyone should intrude on his tnornin rehearsal. But when he saw the stra ger actually preparing to sing, his indi nation changed to wrath, and " then, moment later, to profound_ pity. H said to himself, Poor fellow' He a rentiy doesn't know that I'm here ! Lt would really be too bad to let him g on and make an exhibition of hintsel He would die of mortification when h found oat." • So he called amiss te the brown stra ger, in a tone of exaggerated courtes and deference : Beg pardon, sir, but I've a littl song here I have lust pickedup, that I' vastly like your opinion of. Would yo mind listening to it ?" nen, without waiting- for a reply, he began to sing. He did his level best. He went through his entire repertoir, from beginning to end.. Carols, glee trills, roulades, bits of oratorios an snatches of opera followed each other swift and brilliant succession. It w s truly a wonderful, performance, and t e redbird knew it. When he had finished, he looked tr - -iimplaantly across the way, to see tyli t effect the concert had had upon h s auditor. The stranger seemed nearl asleep. The redbird chuckted. " Gue. s I mast have stunned him," he though " another rouna like that, and probably drop off his perch." -So closed his eyes, drew a long breath, a made ready to finish the job se au piciou sly begun. Suddenly he -heard something. opened his eyes convulsively, let an t that long breath with a gasp, and- lis- tened. Somebody was singing Horne, Sweet Home;" singing it, too, the red- bird felt at once, as it had never been sung in that ravine since the World be- -gan. It was a full octave higher, and a hundred times sweeter, than he would ever sing it if he lived a thousand years. He looked around, half frightened at the exquisite melody. What ! It couldn't be, and yet it wa, , the brown stranger! Wei1! didn't th t beat the world! Then the redbird did what he oughtt have done before; he felt in his ta 1 pocket for his eyeglasses, adjusted the tremulously on his -nose, and. took careful and steady survey of his tuneft 1 neighbor. Straightway a swift Idush, followed b a, feeble and foolish girdle, made its a pearance on his countenance, and pre ently he said, aloud and earnestly : "Will somebody send the fool -kill r around to my office? I have been tryin to teach a, brown thrush ho'w to sing ! Then he folded his hands behind hir drepped his head down between hi shoulders, and silently new off down th ravine. When the thrush had finished his son and looked around him, he fairl laughed, aloud to find the redbird gon But he knew the poor fellow was sti 1 within hearing, SO, after waiting a, m. lite, he began again, ancl what do yo think he did? Well, he sang over again, from me ory, mind you, every ndte of the Ion medley the redbird had just gon through -every blessed nate. And i was as nuich better than the redbird rendering of it as gold is fitter tha pewter. And all the while the redbir down in the ravine was fairly sweatin with mortification mid agony. . It was the most ridiculous perfor auce I ever saw or heard, and I laughe till the tears came. That encourage the thrush, and he kept up his frol c nearly all the forenoon. But the re - birdnever opened his mouth again, net once a a a Of 4 Some Facts About Tobacc . The report of the Commissioner of I ternal Revenue for the last year ind eates that about 3,500,000,000 cigar. 1,000,000,000 cigarettes, and 170,000, pounds of chewing tobacco were co sumed in the United States in the sing e year 1884. A writer in the Inter-Occa calculates that it would take bile m ti 40,000 years simply to count, one 1_, one, the cigars tmoked in that yea The estimate would allow 24 pounds f tobacco a year to every family. \Vhen we consider that a fifteen -cent., cig r represents about two cents' worth: af t bacca and oue cent's worth of labor, an that the total tobacco bill of the emu try mounts up to nearly $500,060,000, t is not to be wondered at that the ecen mist should exclaim in amazement E the waste, and wonder if the alleg "soothing and tranquilizing" infiuen is worth what it dosts. " Some treats since, the annual pt duction of tobacco throughout the word was estimated at -four billions of pound This mass, if transformed into roll -t . bleep, two inches - in diameter, WOU d eadl around the world sixty times ; or, if nate up into tablets, as sailors use i would form a pile as high at an Egypti n pyramid. Allowing the cost of ti e laamanufactured-material to be ten cen s a pound, the yearly expense of t is poisonous growth amounts to $400,00 ,- 000. Put into marketable' shape, t e annualcost reaches $1,000,000,00 This anue a,ccarding to careful compitt ti011, Would construct_tw railroa a round the earth, at $20,000 a mile. t would build 1.00,000 churches, each colt.. I I Lt e ing $10,000, or 500,000 school houses, each costing $2,000; or, it would em- ploy a million of , preachers and a mil- lion Of teachers, at a salary of goo. "In Great Britain alone there are not far from 300,000 tobacco shops. Eng- land prohibits the culture of the weed, that she may secure larger imports, her annual receipts amounting to i40,000,- 000, a greater revenue than she gets from all the gold mines of Australia, In Austria the duties from this source reach the same figures; while in France, where tobacco is a monopoly, they come up to $80,000,000. In most countries official statents show that it costa more than bread. "In the city of New York about 75,000,000 cigars are annually consumed, and at a cost of more than $9,000,000 - enough cigars to build a wall from the ,Empire City to Albany." Renting A Farm. In renting -a farm be careful in select- ing your tenant. Inquire into his -pre- vious record. Let the contract be ih writing, signed and sealed. Let it be signed in dupli- cate so that each party may have a copy. Before the tenant moves on the pre- mises have him sive kood security for the fulfilment of the contriict. , Theta should be in the contract a covenant against assigning and under- letting without the leasers' consent. Examine leases draWn by those who have had long experience in renting farms, and adopt such provisions as your circumstances call for. A. covenant that thebrops shall remain the lessors' until the !lessee's contracts with him have been fulfilled, is _valid against the lessee's creditors. Make the rent payable, quarterly, or sem hannuaily. Every lease should contain a stip- ulation for forfeiture and re-entry in 'case of non-payment, or breach of_con- tract. If about to become a tenant, be care- ful in selecting a landlord. Your peace and prosperity will depend almost as much on the owner of the farm ah'on the farm itself. Beware of run-down farms, those that have been'" skinned" by former tenants by heavy cropping without the applica- nowledge of the of th,e farm, and roper cultivation, mine its desir- tion of manure. A previous managemen its capacity under will helpyou to det ability. -The landlord and f m being found, secure, if you can, a lease for a term of years, not less than three or five. Be careful not to bind yourself to do impossible things, but do all you. promise promptly, and faithfully. You are just as much interested as the landlord in having the contract in writ- ing, duly signed and sealed. , The real interests of landlord and ten- ant are "one and the same." Worthless Orchardcan be • Renovaed. An important fact to know, since the great majority of farmers' orchards that have reached their " in'ddle age," are in that condition. Thisisl net a novel idea, nor is the work of bringing these neglected trees into the fruitful condition of their youth an expen iVe or difficult the back, the old dead bar scraped off I one. If the branches- are cut severely trunk and branches, and this followed by a thorough washing with soft soap and sulphur, new bark will form as smooth And soft as that on a young tree. The soil needs restoring as well, and as the roots are presumably in the s4zne condition as - the branches, it will be wise to stir the surface of the ground beneath the trees as far as the limbs extend. . , This will not only have a tendency to start root actime.but it 'will permit the fertilizing material when reduced to a liquid form to enter the surface more -readily. Stimulating growth by the ap- plication of any kind of plant -food should be done liberally._ Good, rich .decomposed manure is the most certain in its effects at once. Ground bone and unleached wood ashes are indispensable, they cannot ,be surpassed for imparting health and vigor to flagging -vegetatian. Laugh as we will at t1 old-fashioned plan of whitewashing tr es, the practice is one to bearecommen ed. Lime de- stroys insects in the arlier stages of life, restores health and acts as an in- centive to, growth. W I fruit cultere pay? . The answer rest t with the nian rather than with the o' cupation. One who begins cautiously and determines to care for his trees properly, need have no fear of failure. Certainly every farmer ought to make his orchard and small fruit garden a p to his business, and, a,n i in promoting the health his family. -Josiah Hoo phia, Press. Skating Rinks and the Lumber .
