DEAR ExPosITOR,---Receiving your paper some time ago I noticed in the Brussels news that I was in California for the benefit of my health, a statement Which I wish to correct. I came here about the middle of November, not for the benefit " a my health, but for the purpose of perfecting myself in my pro- fession. I am attending the New York " Polyclinic," an institution which was organized about four years ago and whose work is confined exclesively to graduates of medicine. It is conducted by the ablest men of the city, and .be- sides having a large dispensary connect- ed with the institution, -where fromI50 _. to 200 patientS are treated daily, is also eennected with many of the large hospi- tals of. New York, where operations of all kinds are done daily. Every professor eennected with th e institution is a speCial- . ist in the subject he teaches, and hence is much better posted than the general practitioner could ever expect to be; all teaching is done with the patientbe- fore the class, where each one has a chance of making an examination under the instruction of the professor. At present there are doctors attending fpm all parts of America. Many who have - been through the old ceuntry schools, and all admit New York to be ahead of any of them for practical instruction. Men who go to the old country go for a degree, and the majority of them lock themselves;up in their rooms amd study theory until they can pass their ex- amination, and then return home, with - put any frirthet knowledge of practical work than velt n they left it. No de- gree being issit (1 by the "Polyclinic" institution, th re is no inducement for anything bat p antical work and seeing an much medic.41 work as possible, and certainly thq-re is an abundance of ma- terial in a etty the size of New York. The only Canadian I have Ala since 1 carne here was A D. Wilson, whom I saw on the Elevated train a few Sun- days after I ca e, and like every ortho- ditx Presbyteri, n,he carried his Bible in his hand. Ha ing applied myself to work since 1 c me I have not had time to see many of he sights of New York, bnt purpose tai mg a few days for sight- seeing before le ving. The weather has been very coli for • the last week, a heavy snow st rm havine set in on the 7th inst.', ant there, has been good sleighing since. Living is rather ex- pensive here, board and, lodging being . from $7 per WefAi: up as high as finances will admit. 1 purpose being home about the 1st Of April, when I will re- sume practice in Brussels. I remain. yours, A. MoKELVEY, M. D. ' Vanderbilt's -Young Physician. A young phydician of this city who had. - been struggling along in rather an uneasy fashion, was suddenly elated one day, a year or so ago, by a call from William H. Vanderbilt. The young doctor had been a doge Efts -idea, and had won laurels at one of .the city hos- pitals for his surgical work, and in the course of conversation • at. the Grand Centrrd depot Mr. Vanderbilt had.heard the young man's praises, and acting upon a suadenimpulse, as was not un- utual with him, he went directly from his office down to the doctor's office. He had hewn eufferint; for some time from a trouble that many physiciens of high repute had treated unsuccessfully, and now, foe the whim's sake, he put himself under the young doctor's care. He was cured quickly, and became an enthusiattic advocate of the young (lector's :Aide tMany of his friends were sent to the sarne offiee, and to day a .61eas practice, including- patients knOW11 in title most faehiouidtle ciretes ' of N ee York, enriches the lucky physien n, tOisise prespecit Ilad Ineet tV0f tilly gloomy tilt tlie w 'tint of t lie mate late, a . ... rescued hi in from o I ISCLI ri ty. 1; e t th is isn't the paint ', of tile elate.
